PATIENT INFORMATION Mr Frank Lin Plastic Surgeon BREAST AUGMENTATION www.drfranklin.com.au Breast augmentation is an operation that aims to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. Most commonly, implants are used which are generally filled with silicon gel or saline fluid. This operation is often perform to: • • • Enhance the size and shape of small breasts. Restore the volume of the breasts after pregnancy or breast feeding. Correct breast asymmetry. There are many different choices involved when considering breast augmentation. We recommend seeking individual specialist consultation with a fully qualified plastic surgeon. Below is a brief overview of some of the important considerations. Commonly used plane used for breast implants: under the pectoral muscle (left) and above the muscle (right). Combination, or “dual plane” is possible and may be recommended for some. “Plane” of the implant Implant types This refers to the position of the implant relative to the breast and the pectoral muscles. Mr Lin will discuss with you the most suitable plane depending on your individual circumstances. In general, the selection of implant plane depends on the amount of existing breast tissue, previous surgery and sometimes lifestyle factors. Surgical incision In Australia, the most common incision is inframammary (under the breast). Implant technology has improved significantly over the last several decades. Around the world, silicon gel filled implants remain the most popular choice for breast augmentation. Saline filled implants are also available. Other implant considerations include the outside coating, which may be smooth, textured, or a special coating called polyurethane; and the shape of the implant, which may be round or anatomical (“tear drop”) shape. However, for Asian patients and those who may be more prone to poor scarring, the axillary (armpit) incision may be recommended either as an open approach or an endoscopic assisted (keyhole) technique. Mr Lin is fully trained in open and endoscopic approaches and will assess your individual suitability for either technique. Operation time is typically 1½-2 hours. During the operation your safety is our main priority. We would routinely use antibiotics to prevent infection and blood thinning medications to prevent clots (DVT). Occasionally, drain tubes may be used at the end of the operation. For an infra-mammary approach, you will have short scars in the natural fold under the breast. For an axillary (armpit) approach, you will have small scars in the natural skin creases in the armpit. What to expect after surgery • • • • • • Generally we recommend an overnight stay in hospital. Occasionally patients may be able to be discharged the same day. Most women have some discomfort for a few days. This varies depending on the specific type of operation performed. We recommend a supportive garment, such as a crop top, for both comfort and support. Most women should plan for 1-2 weeks off work and 4-6 weeks of avoiding contact sports or heavy lifting. Scar management is an integral part of the recovery process following any surgery to help scars mature and fade. As a part of our commitment to the highest quality surgery and after-care, we provide a specialist scar management consultation with our in-house dermal therapist, who will recommend a treatment regimen that is tailored to your individual needs.
