How Can I Safely Bring My Household Hazardous
Materials To The HHM Facility?
• If possible, bring items in their original containers, or clearly mark contents on container.
If you do not know what is in the container, tell the attendant.
• Tighten all covers and lids.
• NEVER MIX CHEMICALS! They may be fine separately, but together they could produce
toxic fumes, heat, cause a fire or explosion.
• If container is leaking, pack it separately it in a leak-proof container (i.e. pail or tub),
with absorbent material in the bottom.
• To ensure passenger safety, materials should not be loaded into the passenger
compartment of a vehicle.
• Put waste containers, upright, in a sturdy container and place them securely in the trunk
or back of a truck or van.
• Do not put different types of materials into a plastic bag.
• Read and follow all directions when you arrive at the Household Hazardous
Materials Facility.

INSIDE
Salvaging is disassembling an item to remove parts that
have potential recycling value. Salvaging electronic waste,
especially TV’s, can be dangerous and is potentially a
violation of WDNR regulations. Because of the increased
cost of disposal and an increased risk to employees, the
Household Hazardous Materials Program charges for any
electronic waste that has been salvaged. No exceptions.
For more information on recycling electronic waste in
Wisconsin, visit:

Why does the Landfill & Household Hazardous Materials Facility have different hours?
The Landfill and HHM provide different services and have different requirements. Waste delivered to the Landfill and
Citizen’s Drop-Off Area is sorted by the customer. This material either goes to the landfill, a labeled container or a
designated location on the landfill property. Waste that is disposed at HHM is sorted by the staff into one of over
30 different waste streams. Because most of this of what is delivered to HHM is classified as hazardous waste and is
highly regulated, HHM staff needs to set aside time to manage it in a safe and compliant manner.

What Can Be Dropped Off?
Large Items: Furniture, general household waste, toys, bikes,
grills, lawnmowers (without gas and oil), mattresses, stoves, hot
water heaters, washers, dryers, small appliances, etc.
Demolition/Construction Debris: Wood, drywall, doors,
shingles, windows, sinks, toilets, tubs, roofing, bricks, carpets,
tile and flooring.
Other: Yard waste/grass clippings, brush, and animal carcasses.
Tires: Are accepted for 10¢ per pound.
Steps for business users:
1. Prequalification is required. Only businesses that generate
less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste can use the
facility. Call 785-9999 or go to the program website at:
www.co.la-crosse.wi.us/SolidWaste/hhm/business.asp to

If you have questions, call 785-9572 or visit the
Solid Waste Department Web site:
www.lacrossecounty.org/solidwaste.
3. Call to schedule an appointment on Mondays 11:00 – 4:00 or
Thursdays 8:00 – Noon. Business users will not be allowed
to drop off waste without an appointment.
Why do businesses need an appointment?
There are several reasons. Businesses must pre-register to
determine if they qualify. The price charged for different types
of business waste varies, so technicians need to separate
wastes into categories and weigh each one separately. This
takes extra time.

What Cannot Be Dropped Off?
Hazardous waste, propane tanks, refrigerators, air conditioners,
dehumidifiers and other appliances containing refrigerants are
not accepted here. (Most of these are accepted at HHM).
Unauthorized users will be referred to law enforcement.
Salvaging of discarded materials is not allowed.
Reduce, Reuse and
Recycle First!!
It may sound strange for a Solid Waste
Department, but keeping material out of the
landfill is our primary objective. We are very
proud of our 45% diversion rate. This means
that only 55% of the things you throw away
go into the landfill. It’s our goal to recycle
and divert even more. So before you throw
things in the trash or bring those items to us
for disposal, consider if some other person or
organization might be able to use it. Below
are a few examples of where to take some
of those discards.

For organizations that accept unwanted
materials go to the Solid Waste
Departments website. Every little bit we
reduce, reuse, or recyle can make a ton
of difference.

Green Tier
The La Crosse County Solid Waste Department became Wisconsin’s first publicly owned solid waste disposal system to
join the state’s Green Tier program. This program encourages participants to voluntarily collaborate with the state
Department of Natural Resources to go beyond compliance with regulations and to achieve superior environmental
performance. Participation in Green Tier assures that your waste will be managed properly and in an environmentally
sound manner.

Preparing Recycling
• Using the Single-Stream Recycling
system means all recyclable items
are thrown in the cart together.
There is no need to separate.
• Throw away lids and rings.
• Rinse and dry containers.
• Bags, shredded paper, newspaper,
and office papers should be thrown
loosely into the recycling cart; do
not bundle.
• Break down the cardboard and
pressed paper boxes to make room
in your recycling cart.
