( 4) Bau Bau Gene Reflections G en e SC hU bert Mad U .. was born on the nineteenth of June 1952 on rothe island of Tortola British Virgin Islands to Julian and Doris Madura of Baugher Bay. He was the last of the four children of this union. At the tender age of six months, Gene lost his mother. Baby Gene in V.l colloquial terms became "Bau Bau Gene" - nickname that stuck with him throughout his lifetime. His father being a hard-working man, Gene and his siblings were left in the care of several family members: his paternal grandparents Richard and Elizabeth Madura( "Grand" and "Grandpa"), his father's sister Beulah Pickering ("Nenny Beulah"), his maternal Grandparents, Ernest and Floresia Pickering ("Daddy Pick" or "Trujillo" & "Tauntie Florie"), and Armenia Malone ("Aunt Mean"). As a youth in his early teens, Gene resided with his father and step mother, Ethel, at Jean Hill. This was his last stop before striking out on his own. Gene entered the work force at an early age, doing odd jobs at his Uncle Alvin's garage at Baugher's Bay. lt was here that he showed an aptitude for fixing anything mechanical and learnt to operate his Uncle's fleet of heavy equipment. His dream was to establish himself as the best heavy equipment operator in the Territory - a feat he accomplished in short few years. Gene was an avid backhoe and bulldozer operator who was responsible for cutting many, many foundations -from East End to West End- and was called 'Godfather' by some for whom he dug foundations. This was because he would not only cut the foundation but would deliver sand, gravel, steel and cement to the people and they would pay him little by little, however much they could. Gene was very high energy, he was not afraid of any challenge or to challenge any one. He lived by the motto "the easy I do right away, the difficult will take some time". No job was too small nor too large; where no one else would go, Gene would go just to prove a point- that it can be done and he can do it. Gene had his own perspective on things; he was not easily persuaded or influenced by any one. He did what he loved and he loved what he did; he embraced life. He was very explicit; he never hesitated to tell anyone what he had to say. He made life easier with his humor- he used it to comfort and he used it to entertain. There was never a dull moment when Gene was around. He had a keen sense of humor; he enjoyed laughing and making others laugh. He was always cracking jokes with everyone around him. Gene was a community minded individual giving free backhoe & trucking service by cleaning up roads and drains after every flood or hurricane. He played Santa Claus at Christmas time for a number of years and even purchased his own Santa suit. He sponsored softball teams from the Baugher's Bay area, and was a member of the Four Strong fungi band. He was a sponsor of the Caribbean Ecstasy Dance Band of Virgin Gorda. He was a member of the Heritage Dancers for a short time. He almost single handedly created the little sandy beach at the foot of Jean Hill, unofficially called "Bau Bau Gene's Beach". He was Mr. Fix it, for all his friends and famil y and could fix anything mechanical. Gene loved the sea and boats were his passion and at the time of his passing he owned seven boats of various sizes. He loved line fishing and was a spear fishing enthusiast until it was banned. He gave away most of his catch. Dancing was his favorite pastime and Quito's on Friday night was his favorite spot. That's the kind of man he was. He didn't always~now how best to deal with situations, but he found his own way to show how much he cared and, whether' e was wrong or right, you dared not say because his way was always right because he did it He accompl ed more tnan he could have dreamt and more than was expected of him by his family. 4·"- Gene will be sorely missed by his family and numero and indirectly. He has lived his life and he has made lands. Many will be,gr~~-eful for the . heart~. May his sou~ rest in peace. friends, and by those he helped and inspired· directly ontribution to his commut1ity,. the British Virgin !sowing him. His memories will for-ever be in our Bau Bau Gene ( 5) Acknowledgements Staff of Davis Funeral Home, Popeye's Service, Bobby Hodge, Maddox Photography, Multi-Purpose Sports Complex Management, Peebles Hospital and R L Schneider Hospital (extended to Dr. Bacot and staff).
