Eligibility






Jump start your STEM career by taking one of
our free online summer math courses
For example, if you are to be placed in
Precalculus Analysis in the fall, then you can
instead take Precalculus Analysis online in
the summer and start in Calculus I in the fall.
The summer course uses a series of online,
self-guided modules, which allow students to
move at their own pace.
When students are ready they take a test
and if they achieve 70% or greater they can
register for the next math course.
9 weeks are allowed to complete an online
summer math course.
Expect to dedicate 50 - 150 hours

The Math Prep for STEM Careers is a free summer
bridge program offered to incoming UMD freshmen
from underrepresented groups in STEM. The program
consists of two parts: a five-day summer camp where
students participate in activities designed to increase
persistence to complete a STEM degree, and an online
summer math course (Basic Math, Intro to Algebra,
College Algebra, or Precalculus Analysis).

The model is to “study-then-test-out” of prerequisite
courses to Math 1296 (Calculus I). Students work
through a 9-week summer online math course for
which they are placed by their math ACT.
Two study sessions are offered in the Twin Cities
where students can meet with the UMD math
instructor to get additional help and ask questions.
In addition to having the potential of moving up in the
sequence of required math courses, students benefit
from doing math over the summer prior to their first
college-level math course.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in
both the summer camp and online math course.
Goals of Program:
1. Increase student preparation for college level
mathematics and science.
2. Increase student persistence to pursue a STEM
undergraduate degree at UMD.
