The first 2015 Boogie on Broad Concert Series presented
by Dunn Area Tourism Authority is set for Thursday, April 16 from
6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., kicking off the series with a free concert by
local favorite, Band of Oz, featuring all types of music including
rock, country, beach, funk and classic rock.
Join us for this FREE, family-friendly event to include DJ
Butch Halpin of Carolina Sounds, children’s activities, concessions,
and Sybil the Clown providing Face Painting and Balloons, in
addition to the concert. Event is located on Broad Street between
Wilson and Clinton Avenues in Downtown Dunn. This event is open
to the public and everyone is encouraged to bring their lawn chairs. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the
Dunn Shrine Center located at 211 N Clinton Avenue in Dunn. See inside for more details.

The Education Department of the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce
announces the inaugural Golden Apple Awards. This new Chamber program
will help recognize the efforts of standout teachers in our Dunn Area Schools.
Two teachers from two schools, randomly chosen from the schools Principal‘s
nominations, will be highlighted every month that school is in session.

Twenty-five students recently participated in the spring 2015 Laser & Photonics FUN with Lasers Workshop on Central
Carolina Community College’s Harnett Campus. Gary Beasley, who is Lead Instructor for the CCCC’s Laser & Photonics program,
conducted the event. Students attended from schools across Harnett County including Coats-Erwin and Dunn middle schools; Triton
high school; and Cape Fear Christian Academy .
Lab Assistants Chris Baggett, Kaitlyn Camp, Colt Dudley, and Alex Voytik were on hand to demonstrate how electrical
components are used to conduct light, melt a brick
using a high-powered laser beam, and show students
a colorful light display using an Argon-Krypton
Laser. The workshop taught students how crystals
and fiber are incorporated into the technology they
use every day. Students watched as their names
appeared on a nametag with the use of the CO2
Engraving Laser.

An Academic Honors Breakfast was held on Tuesday, March 10 at Triton High School, sponsored by the Triton Academic
Booster Club. During the breakfast, 350 students were honored for earning a grade point average of 3.63 or higher.
Students were treated to a chicken biscuit breakfast and a visit from
Clayton White, a 1996 Triton graduate and football standout who played for N.C.
State and was drafted by the New York Giants. Now he serves as the safety and
co-special teams coordinator at N.C. State.
Mr. White said speaking to a group of top academic students was quite a
challenge, as he usually talked to groups of kids in danger of dropping out of high
school—those who considered themselves “too cool for school.” He stressed the
qualities of leaders—focus, determination and perseverance, but added that true
leaders and “most valuable players” also help those around them achieve, as well.
In closing Mr. White said, “keep getting better, keep rising, and if you do
that and bring someone else with you, that makes you the real MVP.”

Reaves Houston, a senior at Triton High School has been selected as a recipient of the Morehead-Cain
Scholarship offered by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Reaves was also a Park Scholarship finalist
and was selected as an alternate.
While at Triton, Reaves has served as Interact Club president and Student Government Association executive
treasurer. She is in the Close-Up Club, Alpha Honors Society, Beta Club, Juniorettes, Mathletes and Peer Tutoring.
She played JV Volleyball for two years and has been on the varsity tennis team for the last two years.
Reaves is a testament to Dunn School’s; she was a student at Harnett Primary, Wayne Avenue and Dunn
Middle Schools. Way to go, Reaves! We are so proud of you!

will provide visitors from an array of schools, business’, and community partners with an introspective experience in our
students and school culture. Students will spend the day hosting our guests as they witness leadership in action in various
classrooms.
Additionally, students will serve as greeters and instruct our visitors on how we implement S.T.E.M (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) into our curriculum as well as other daily functions/activities that make

On March 9th officials from the City, County, State and National legislatures met at DeBorah's Restaurant for an update on the state
of the various areas of government in Harnett County.
Dunn Mayor Oscar Harris reported on three upcoming events for the City including the dedication of the new Rooms to Go; the
dedication of the official re-opening of Tyler Park; and the expansion of sewer lines over to Love's Travel Stop, of which Love's is covering the
total cost and will allow others to tap into the City water supply creating future income.
Bill Tyson of CCCC spoke about the offerings at the new Dunn Campus which will offer culinary and hospitality programs with state-of
-the-art equipment; as well as a program for High School students to receive college credits towards an Associates degree prior to graduating.
County Public Information Officer Brian Haney spoke about several projects including the expansion of Ray Road in western Harnett
County; an expansion at the water treatment plant, increasing water treatment from 24 million gallons to 42 million gallons. He also spoke
about the economic growth, citing the building of a Walmart Super Center on Hwy. 87, as well as Campbell University's expansion to the
Osteopathic School and an engineering program. The County Economic Development and Planning Depart. will collaborate on updating the
county's economic development and comprehensive land use plan; last updated over 10 years ago.
Senator Ronald Rabin is focused on economic growth for Harnett County, continuing his work on the tax code, containing spending
and reducing regulations on businesses. He is also a great proponent of the partnerships with community college systems. He also spoke to
the recent gas tax discussions. Another initiative for the Senator is to reintroduce a bill to lessen the term limits for legislatures to a four-year
term, with a four-term limit.
Representative David Lewis also spoke to the gas tax issue, stating the need for a long term solution to avoid loss of revenue. He also
hopes the Department of Transportation will be able to add efficiencies to continue to support the need for road infrastructure and
maintenance. Rep. Lewis also spoke to the necessity of the historic tax credit to continue to give all counties in the state the ability to use and
receive monies to refurbish historic buildings and sites. He liked to see the credits converted to a grant program.
Pat Fitzgerald spoke on behalf of Congresswoman Renee Ellmers efforts in Washington and locally. She stated Congresswoman
Ellmers has passed a bi-partisan anti-human trafficking bill to help fund training of front line emergency workers to identify and deal with human
trafficking in hospitals and medical facilities. She also spoke about another bi-partisan bill, call the 21st Century Cure Initiative, which will allow
for the discovery and delivery of cures and treatments. Congresswoman Ellmers is also still working on maintaining the 440th Airborne Wing at
Fort Bragg.
Russell Galvan, Vice President of the Chamber's Governmental Affairs Committee concluded the meeting by thanking everyone for
attending and for all the officials presenting on behalf of their respective offices.
The Dunn Young Professionals held a Networking Lunch on
March 10 at Pizza Inn, moderated by Chair/VP Russell Galvan. The
event began with an open discussion during a pizza buffet lunch,
followed by introductions and a question chosen at random by each
attendee. Some of the topics addressed were, “What was the most
recent book you read?” to “What was you most significant career
break?” to “Why are you here today?”

March 26th marked the opening of the Southern
Preppy Department at Jernigan's Nursery & Trading Post.
Chamber President Hope Tyndall welcomed all the guests
and wished the Jernigan's team all the success with their
new products and expanded second floor offerings. Tom
Wagoner of Central Baptist Church offered prayer for joy
and prosperity to all involved and who support the
business. Owner Renee Jackson thanked her employees,
her customers and her vendors for making Jernigan's so
successful. She welcomed everyone to come in and see
all that they have to offer. "Don't worry, we will still have
all the Christmas stuff", she exclaimed. Merchandise will
appear around the store as well as on the second floor.
Councilman Billy Barfield thanked Jernigan's for being a
supporter of the City, as well as being a strong supporter
of area organizations. After the Ribbon Cutting, attendees
were treated to a special sale, delicious treats, and
refreshments. Stop by Jernigan's and check out the new
Southern Preppy Department. They truly have something
for everyone!
Curves Annual Food Drive has concluded and they
are very happy to report that together they collected 675
pounds of food in total donations in just two weeks!
This breaks down to $450 in cash donations and 225
non-perishable food items! All of these donations are to
benefit the DUMA Food Bank and their efforts to serve our
community. Lena West, owner/operator of Curves of
Dunn, is so appreciative of her dedicated Curves
members and all that have supported this event and the
following member businesses and organizations that
partnered with them to either advertise or collect food
donations for the Food Drive: Glad Tidings Church, Dunn
