MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Second semester has come and our first official report card
has arrived! Since the start of semester two we have held our
grade eight parent night, parent/guardian/teacher
conferences, Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test and
many other worthwhile field-trips, club activities and student
events. Still to come are sports clubs, art events, Prom 2015,
Student Government elections, the Parent Partnership event,
Grad Breakfast, Athletic Banquet, Concert Choir Gala and
Commencement on June 25th at 3:30pm.We hope that your
child is reaching their goals and that they are planning for
success through effort and perseverance.
The report that your child brings home today is the report card
that is in use in all of Ontario’s Secondary Schools. There are
still two more months of classes left until the final evaluations
begin in June. This means that there is still opportunity for
students to seek assistance, remediation and clarification.
Assessment is the process of gathering information that
accurately reflects how well a student is achieving the
curriculum expectations. Assessment provides valuable
information for students, teachers and parents/guardians with
respect to next steps for improvement. It also provides
information to guide teachers in instructional approaches and
classroom practices. The report card also provides
information on responsibility, organization, independent work,
collaboration, initiative, and self-regulation which are learning
skills and work habits that each student and parent should
read.
The report card is one means of communicating achievement
to parents/guardians and students. Throughout the year,
teachers are available for parent/student/teacher conference
interviews, telephone calls and informal reports. Please
contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or
concerns, or should you need more information on methods
to support your child.
I hope that each student at Eastview Secondary School will
experience success both inside and outside of the classroom.
Collectively, we can work together to support our children to
reach their potential. My sincere best wishes to each student
for a successful second term.
Ms. J. Seymour

Partnership: Working Together To Improve
Student Attendance
Remember, learning builds day by day. A
child who misses a day of school also
misses a day of learning. So make school
a top priority. By building the habit of daily
attendance, you’ll help your child see that
school is serious. And chances are, you’ll
also see an improvement in grades.
AHME (After Hours Math
and English):
Eastview Students looking for
help are welcome to come to
the library on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursdays
from 2:50-3:50 pm. The focus

Help prepare your child to write the EQAO tests
Students in elementary and secondary schools across
Ontario write provincial assessments in reading, writing and
mathematics each year. The assessments are developed
and scored by the Education Quality and Accountability
Office (EQAO). Each student that completes a provincial
assessment receives an Individual Student Report (ISR)
which describes the student's achievement. School and
board achievement data is used to improve teaching
practices and to support student learning.
Further information about the provincial assessments,
including resources to help prepare your child for the test,
can be found at www.eqao.com.
Information about The Ontario College of Teachers

Find a Teacher — learn about your children’s teachers’
qualifications

Professionally Speaking — quarterly magazine that
keeps members informed on issues that impact teachers
and students in and out of the classroom

The disciplinary process — the OCT investigates and
resolves complaints about College members; hearings
are open to the public and full decisions are available

Bringing Shakespeare to Life
The English Department was excited to take Grade Eleven
University English classes to a performance of Macbeth on
April 16th. This outstanding production, put on by the Classical
Theatre Project, was performed at the Centre for the
Performing Arts in Toronto. A fantastic time was had by all
students!
The West Regional Showcase competition for the 2015 Ontario Sears Drama Festival took place last week at Bear Creek, in
Barrie, and Eastview was honoured to have been selected as one of the 3 Schools in the Georgian Bay District to participate. Our
students worked extremely hard to prepare and improve for the Regionals and their efforts definitely paid off as they delivered their
best work yet at the Regional competition. Here's how our District did in Saturday's Awards Ceremony:
St. Peter's Catholic High School - Tracks, written by Peter Tarsi and directed by Kiah O'Flanagan-Tasse
Award of Merit:
ACTING: well developed characters - cast
Award of Excellence:
ACTING - Thomas Williams
DIRECTING - Kiah O'Flanagan-Tasse
Gravenhurst High School - Tapeman, written and directed by Nicholas Sluyk and Mr. Earl Sacrey
Award of Merit:
SET DESIGN AND BUILDING - actors involved in comic book Tapeman scenes
Eastview Secondary School - Sonder, written and directed by Ashley Frederick
Award of Excellence:
PLAYWRIGHT/DIRECTING - Ashley Frederick
Here's the link to see the entire list of recipients: http://www.searsdramafestival.com/2015_Awards/WestRegional.htm
The adjudicator, Mr. Gord Davis, made a special point of emphasizing that every award given really belongs to all cast and crew
members for the production, as each person involved in a show relies on and needs the work and support of every other crew
member. This is particularly relevant in a show like Sonder, where so many of the members of the ensemble did not have
spoken lines, but their performances were essential to the delivery of the actual concept of sonder and to creating the illusion of
the "moving" city bus. With competitions such as this, the number of awards available is limited and with around 350 students
participating and so much talent, it is impossible to formally recognize every person individually with an award. He said he would,
if he could. So...Congratulations, One and All!
Thanks again to friends, families, teachers, administration, custodial staff, and even our bus driver. We absolutely couldn't have
done it without you!
We also want to give a BIG shout out to say thank you to Bear Creek's, Mr. James Brawn and his students, for their incredible
efforts, enthusiasm, and generosity as hosts for the West Regional Showcase and for creating such a wonderful celebration on the
Saturday, with exciting theatre workshops, and the murder mystery dinner and dance!
Best,
Elizabeth Bennett and Betony Main

Message from your local Health Unit: Prevent the
bite from mosquitoes and ticks
West Nile virus is spread to humans by the bite of an infected
mosquito. Lyme disease is an infection caused by a bacteria
spread by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. It’s
important you and your family take precautions to reduce the
chances of being bitten by
a mosquito or a tick. Steps
to protect yourself include:

 Wear closed footwear
and socks. Tuck your
pants into your socks.
 If hiking or spending
time outdoors, check for ticks on exposed areas of your skin

 Use a personal insect repellent that has deet (following
the manufacturer's directions for use). Apply it to your skin
and outer clothing. Avoid your eyes and mouth, as well as
cuts and scrapes.
Put a tick and flea collar on your pet and check them for ticks
periodically.
When choosing a repellent, consider a product that meets
your needs, and only use personal repellents that are
registered in Canada. Never use a product labeled as an
insecticide on your body.
