This talk traces the complicated
relationships between Western
civility, Taiwanese civility, and the
image of Taiwanese civility popular in mainland China. It shows how the mainland vision, which takes
preservation of traditional Chinese culture as a defining feature of Taiwanese civility, is contested and
resisted by opinion leaders and ordinary
people in Taiwan.
