Kuldiha Forest
Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary About 300 sq.km of hilly landscape in Balasore district
constitutes the Kuldiha forest. It is close to Nilgiri forest towards north and Mayurbhanj
forest in northwest. Sukhuapata and Gagua hills separate Kuldiha from Similipal. Through
Gadasahi forests on the south west, Kuldiha have a disjointed link with Baula RF of Hadgarh
reservoir. Rising from 169m above sea level, some prominent hills that form the landscape
include Asta Pahar (423m) occupying a Central position; Devgiri Pahar (682m) in south;
Ranga matia (629m) in north; Kolia Parbat (495m) in east. Kuldiha fits into a tourism circuit
encompassing Chandipur, Remuna, Nilagiri and Panchalingeswar. Kuldiha presents typical
mixture of Peninsular (coastal) Sal forests and moist mixed deciduous forests of deccan
peninsula. Small rivers emerging from the Kuldiha landscape are Tangana, Kamala,
Basudhar, Uastal Nala. The forested areas of the region feed to Budhabalanga through
tributaries Sono in North and Gangahar in south. There are two reservoirs in Kuldiha. The
Rissia reservoir in northwest is over river Tangana and Sindhua reservoir in southeast is over
Uastal nala. These to reservoirs have helped the crop and climate regime of the region.
Elephants that characterize the landscape are commonly seen in Kuldiha. The reservoirs
attract the elephants round the year. Forests along the migration route of elephants from
Kuldiha to Similipal and Hadagarh through the forests of Gogua, Ketakijhari, Balihudi and
Kupari are fragmented but offers scope for revival. From the year 2004, tiger has been
reported from Kuldiha. This could have been possible because of establishment of forest
linkage with Similipal. The Forest ecosystem of Kuldiha provides an ideal habitat for the
largest herbivore, the Gaur as well as the burrowing Pangolin. There is a good population of
Giant squirrel indicating that the forest canopy of Kuldiha is in good state. There are Rest
houses and Rest sheds at strategic locations in and around the periphery of the sanctuary to

provide accommodation facility to the visiting tourists. The famous temple of Lord
Jagannath at Nilagiri is visited by the visitors / tourists from far and wide.
Simlipal Tiger Reserve
Similipal is known as the land of the roar of the tiger and the trumpet of the elephant. Dense
forest, rugged hilly terrain and wild animals combine to shape its wilderness. Certainly, a
place for nature-sensitive visitors who can rough it out. The Similipal hill ranges have
connectivity with Satkoshia and Nato reserve forests in the Mayurbhanj district and Baula
reserve forest in Keonjhar district. Recent trends suggest the establishment of contiguity of
habitat supporting movement of tiger up to Kuldiha Sanctuary in Balasore district. Floral
and faunal composition have some similarities with elements from Western ghats and North
east India. Similipal holds 7% flowering plants, 8% orchids, 7% reptiles, 20% birds and 11%
mammals found in India. Semi-evergreen and moist nature of the tropical forest have
resulted in luxuriant vegetation offering ideal shelter for wild animals. Among the important
waterfalls of Similipal are the Joranda (150m) and Barehipani (400m). Similipal retains
some of the best Sal forests of India and Sal constitutes about 50% of the total forest habitat
of Similipal. The landscape is beautifully studded with numerous small and high hills densely
covered with vegetation. The highest hill Khairiberu is 1168m and next to it is Meghasini,
standing at 1163m. The network of several perennial streams and rivers that interlace the
deep folds of Similipal forests remain wet even during the peak summer in April-May. Come
May-June, a large number of Orchids bloom, exotically coloured and wondrously shelved.
Similipal holds 94 species of these epiphytes. Three endemic orchids of Similipal occur in
Meghasini and Jenabil area. Similipal holds the largest tiger population any where in its
distributional range within the State. Similipal has been declared as a Tiger Reserve since
1973. Semi-evergreen and moist nature of the tropical forests along with a number of
perennial streams offer ideal shelter to a population of about 500 elephants in Similipal.
Sambar, Barking Deer and Wild boat constitute the major prey base for tiger in Similipal.
The Orchidarium at Gudugudia is one of the best demonstration of ex-situ and in-situ
approaches in conservation of flora of Similipal. A number of Rest houses, Rest sheds and
Camp houses have been situated at Strategic locations in and around the Similipal, for
providing accommodation facilities to the tourists as well as staff on field duty. People of
Similipal continue to live with aboriginal status. They live in the forests and depend on the
forest. The Khadia tribe are the best examples of people leading a life style of ‘gatherness”.
Bhitarkonika Forest
Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary (BKWS) was created during the year 1975 to preserve the
rich biodiversity and the pristine beauty of nature in the Brahmani-Baitarani (Dhamra)
deltaic region of coastal Orissa. The core area of the Sanctuary was later designated as
Bhitarkanika National Park (BKNP) in 1988. Bhitarkanika has been designated a Ramsar site
(Wetland of international importance), the 2nd in the state, in the year 2002. The area has
been proposed to be included in the list of World Heritage Sites. Located in Kendrapara
District, the Sanctuary and National Park offer numerous opportunities to celebrate and
conserve nature. Bhitarkanika river system is ruled by a few giant Saltwater crocodiles. This
basking crocodile is one of such large crocodiles of about 20 ft. length. The area is criscrossed by numerous creeks and creek-lets and tidal river, and rivulets. The nesting
behaviour of mother Saltwater crocodile is different from other two Indian Crocodilian
species. She prepares a mound nest in a secluded place by collecting available nesting
material which includes aquatic fern species (Acrostischum aureum), Hental (Phonix
paludosa), etc. The nesting female crocodile actively guards her nests for about 75 days, until
the young crocodiles hatch out for moving into the creeks. The dominant vegetation type is
mangrove. The un-disturbed river bank is the favoured basking spot for Saltwater crocodiles.
Bhitarkanika mangrove forests provide an abode for the deadly poisonous snake, King cobra.

This is one of the few such habitats in the country where a good population of King cobras
are seen. White Bellied Sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), an endangered bird, is an
indicator species of this healthy wetland ecosystem. Come monsoon: water birds comprising
of eleven species throng together at a place known as “Bagagahan”, close to the Suhajore
creek. The total nesting bird population including the new born ones is about 50,000. The
majority of nesting birds include Open billed storks. The choice of nesting trees vary from
species to species, the most preferred one is Heriteria species that provides a good canopy
cover. The Spotted deer have adjusted well to the climatic conditions of this ecosystem. Their
population is on the increasing trend, and a good population is visible around the Crocodile
Research Centre at Dangmal and also along the river banks. Morning and evening hours are
the best times to observe the spotted deers preferably along the river banks. Spotted deers
can also be seen in good numbers near the FRH at Dangmal during night hours. Boating to
ferry the tourist in the river system for observing the scenic beauty and the biodiversity
resource including basking crocodile, water monitor and spotted deer.
