Saturday (May 9) is the Susan G. Komen Utah Race for the Cure (Breast Cancer, 5k Run/Walk). See the
following link for details: http://komenutah.org/. This will be a wonderful event!
Dr. Susan R. Madsen, Orin R. Woodbury Professor of Leadership and Ethics, Utah Valley University,
Woodbury School of Business will be speaking in the Uintah Basin on May 12 (The Confidence Crisis for Girls
& Women). Details are on the following USU site for this Roosevelt event: http://uintahbasin.usu.edu/
“SPARK: The Women in STEM Summit” will be held at The Leonardo on May 16 (9am-4pm). This is open to
women who are in high school and older. There will be a chance for mentoring in the afternoon, so they are
looking for mentors and mentees. Details are on the attachment and at the following link:
http://stemwomenut.splashthat.com/. Keynote address by Dr. Susan R. Madsen, Orin R. Woodbury
Professor of Leadership and Ethics, Utah Valley University, Woodbury School of Business.
The Community Foundation of Utah’s Women’s Giving Circle is hosting a May 28th panel titled, “Women
Unlimited: Dismantling the Messages that Erode Our Intrinsic Value.” These issues are critical to understand
for ourselves and for anyone who influences girls and women. There are only about 100 seats, so I would
encourage anyone to RSVP soon if you want to attend.
“Girls on the Run Utah” 5k event held on May 30 in SLC. This event has a great mission as well, and details
can be found online.
Women’s Leadership Institute will be in our state later this month. They will be providing valuable training
and development opportunities for women—particularly to help more women statewide become prepared
to serve on corporate boards and run/win political seats (city, county, state). If you work in business
settings, you may also be interested in the statewide corporate challenge that will be launched soon. Their
official website will be up soon, but you can get a few details here, and you can contact Pat Jones or Trish
Hatch for many more details.
Other resources available on our Utah Women & Leadership Project website and also many great posts on
our Utah Women & Leadership Blog.

SALT LAKE TEENS WRITE
We're seeking teens who will be juniors next year for Salt Lake Teens Write, a program the SLCC Community
Writing Center runs in partnership with the Salt Lake City Public Library. Winner of the SLCC Innovation of the
Year Award in 2011-2012 and a Top-10 Finalist Winner for a National Bellwether Award from the Community
College Futures Assembly, this program pairs adults who use writing in a significant way in their daily lives and
professions with underrepresented 11th grade teens. Together, the teams work on writing within a variety of
genres throughout the academic year by meeting weekly in pairs, attending three all-group workshops, and
producing a portfolio of writing. We have a training and a kickoff celebration in the fall, and a final
celebration and publication at the school year's end.
Spy Hop Productions made a film about Salt Lake Teens Write, which is linked to our site and can be viewed
here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8Vs2bUydRQ&feature=youtu.be The program was also featured
on KUED's Contact: http://www.kued.org/?area=outreach&action=contact&day=2012-07-09, SLCC's web site:

USNA Summer Programs
Greetings from Annapolis! With winter halfway through and spring on the horizon, the Office of
Admissions team at the United States Naval Academy is actively gearing up to host high school
students from across the nation at our two marquis summer programs, Summer STEM Camp and
Naval Academy Summer Seminar.
Summer STEM Camp is designed to spark and cultivate interest in the many academic disciplines
which make up science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A hands-on, design-based
program, Naval Academy Summer STEM will challenge students to think scientifically, problem-solve
creatively, and work cooperatively in teams. Open to rising 9th, 10th and 11th graders, Summer STEM
is led by USNA faculty and currently enrolled midshipmen and is a great fit for students looking to
broaden their understanding of STEM study and careers.
The United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar is a fast-paced, six-day experience for high
achievers who have completed their junior year in high school. Summer Seminar teaches students
about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally
important roles in developing our nation's leaders. If you have students you feel would be interested in
pursuing an appointment to one of the nation's service academies and serving the country as an officer,
encourage them to consider attending the Naval Academy's Summer Seminar.
We recognize your students have many options to fill their summer days and wish to thank you for
bringing the opportunities at the Naval Academy to their attention. If you have questions about our
programs or would like additional information or literature to share with your students, please feel free
to contact the Office of Admissions at [email protected], or (410) 293-1858.

things. First, we are hosting an event called “Scholars Day” on our campus for juniors on Thursday, May
