Dear District One Members,
It seems like spring has finally come to New England. Temps are above 40 degrees during the day,
the Red Sox are playing real games not in Florida and the Boston Marathon is right around the corner.
These are all good signs indeed.
Thanks to all of you for participating in NATM. It was a huge success this year with many events
taking place both regionally and nationally. I was pleased to hear the term "athletic trainer" used by
the sports media. Whether it was an AT attending to an injury in the NCAA basketball tournaments or
the announcement from the NFL about using AT's for sideline field observation, it seems we are
getting our due.
As we move forward into the spring I encourage you to attend your state association meetings. These
are important venues to not only catch up with colleagues but to learn about state happenings within
our profession. Rhode Island is currently going thru some legislative challenges with regards to their
practice act. The quick mobilization of the AT membership (along with athletic administrators,
physicians and the NATA office) in Rhode Island by State Association President Andy Llaguno was
instrumental in getting the message out to the state legislators. Please see Andy’s enclosed email
within these notes for more details. I am hopefully he will have good news in the near future to
report to us.
Finally, I would ask that you keep everyone involved in the Boston Marathon, past and present, and
the Rebecca Payne family in your thoughts.

The NATA BOD approved the district-based Education Advancement Committee (EAC) to
be formulated under the ECE. Stephanie Mazerolle will be the District One rep for the
Education Advancement Committee.
Information on Site Selection for Conventions
NATA members often ask us how we select our convention city each year. It’s a complicated process
that takes into account many factors. NATA’s Director of Meeting Management Lori Marker took the
time at our recent Joint Committee Meeting to explain the process to attendees. The following is an
abbreviation of her presentation at the JCM.
Right now the NATA convention location is booked six years in advance, but that lead time is likely to
increase due to our association’s growth and the increasing competition for large convention facilities.
Right now we are booked through 2019, and our Meetings Department will bid our 2020 and possibly
2021 conventions this year.
NATA 2015: St. Louis
NATA 2016: Baltimore
NATA 2017: Houston
NATA 2018: New Orleans
NATA 2019: Las Vegas
Prior to January 2014, the bid was restricted to certain cities because the NATA convention operated
on a strict rotation to certain geographic regions (east, central, west). We eliminated the convention
rotation pattern in early 2014, and now the bid process is a nationwide search for the best host city.
Our convention is a large event by convention industry standards. It is ranked as one of the Top 50
Largest Medical Meetings in the U.S. by the Healthcare Convention & Exhibitors Association. The
growth of the convention is very encouraging, but it does eliminate many cities from consideration
because they do not meet our requirements. The following criteria also play a crucial part of the
selection process.

Convention center space and cost:
As mentioned above, the convention center must be large enough to host our event. We also consider
the expenses, which include facility rental fees and labor rates. Significant facility restrictions also
impacts costs.
Date availability:
Our convention is restricted to the last two weeks in June because that is when most ATs are able to
travel and attend our event, so we do not have date flexibility. The cities must be available to host
within our window.
Hotel package:
A hotel package consists of the number of desirable convention hotels and rooms available, plus the
hotel rates offered. The number of hotels and rooms within a 10-block radius of the center is a critical
factor. When hotel room supply exceeds demand (NATA, other groups and events, tourism or a
combination thereof) there is less compression in the city, and we are able to negotiate affordable
tiered rates (multiple rate levels) with the hotels. When demand meets and/or exceeds supply,
compression will occur and higher hotel rates will prevail across the board. Cities where standard hotel
rates are above $200 are not considered.
Entertainment package:
Networking is a big part of the convention, so it’s paramount that adequate restaurant and
entertainment (clubs, bars, museums, etc.) options are located in close proximity to the convention
center and hotels. While this isn’t a deal-breaker, it is a detractor.
Remaining cities are in the running each year, and our Meetings Department works very hard to do its
due diligence and pick the best option for our members. Our main priority is to put on an excellent
convention that is accessible to as many members as possible.
The great news is that many cities are reinvesting in their convention centers, and major hotel chains
are building new convention hotels in these cities. We’re hopeful that we’ll have more options in the
future.
We hope this provides a little more insight into site selection for the convention. Most of all, we hope

planning your itinerary. It’s going to be another superb event.

The NATA Foundation will sponsor several events at the NATA Convention in St. Louis this June. We
will focus on a few of those in each newsletter issue leading up to NATA 2015!



The NATA Foundation 5K Fun Run/Walk sponsored by Gatorade is back, so start training now!
Don't feel like running? Register anyway and walk the course with your fellow ATs and
students on Friday, June 26 at 6:30 a.m. It's a great way to get some exercise and support
the NATA Foundation at the same time!
We will once again host a block party at Laclede's Landing to kick off convention. You can
purchase a Party Pass for $20 through registration that will allow you to receive discounts the
entire week in St. Louis, as well as gain access to this great event that will take place on
Tuesday, June 23 after the NATA Welcome Reception.
The NATA Foundation Free Communications program will be the largest in our history in 2015!
More than 500 abstracts were submitted this year, with 434 being accepted for presentation in
St. Louis! Of the 434 abstracts, 146 are oral presentations, 192 are poster presentations and
96 are thematic rapid fire presentations. This total is an all-time record for Free Comm
presentations!

Definition of the role of the State Ambassadors:
NATA Foundation Ambassadors are charged with (1) representing the NATA Foundation to my
assigned association/organization and vice-versa; (2) upholding and helping fulfill the NATA
Foundation’s mission by overseeing and/or assisting with projects and activities that align with the
organization’s bylaws, policies and procedures and strategic plan; (2) carrying out the functions
assigned to me by the NATA Foundation Board of Directors and/or staff; and (3) remaining up-to-date
on events and circumstances affecting the NATA Foundation, the NATA and those both groups serve.

District One StarTRACKS Winner

I am pleased to announce that Chris Nightingale is our 2015 District One StarTRACKS winner. He was
chosen from an impressive pool of applicants this year. The purpose of this leadership development
program (StarTRACKS) is to assist NATA members, Leadership Scholars, who wish to enter into the
leadership track for the state, district, or national athletic trainer organizations, or who may wish to
pursue leadership skills for personal development purposes.
Chris Nightingale has been the Athletic Training Clinical Education Coordinator at the University of
Maine for the past six years. Prior to UMaine, he served as a clinical athletic trainer at Maine Maritime
Academy and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has a Doctoral degree from Boston
University, a Master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor’s degree at the
University of Maine. He has been participating in the NATA Star Tracks Leadership Development
Program for past several years.
Chris has served as the Co-Chair of the Maine Athletic Trainers Association Honors and Awards
Committee for several years and has been involved with the BOC as a Testing Materials Coordinator
and Home Study Reviewer. He has also been a reviewer on multiple occasions for the Conference
Planning Committee for the NATA National Meeting and has been both a moderator and presenter at
the NATA Athletic Training Educators Conference. He also has been participating in the
"Toastmasters" circuit in Maine.
Chris reports he intends to use these funds that accompany this award to help pay for registration and
travel to the 2015 BOC State Regulatory Conference in Nebraska in July. Chris states to me,
"Participation in the Star Tracks Program has helped me develop leadership skills and I hope to share
the things I have learned in the program and things I will learn at the Regulatory Conference with my
state association in the hopes of helping the Maine Athletic Trainers Association represent the needs
and ambitions of the athletic trainers of Maine."
Peace for the Rebecca Payne Family
Rebecca’s death touched many in District One, as she was the President of the Athletic Training Club
at Northeastern University. Her death on May 20, 2008 resonated throughout our District. The District
Attorney’s office recently agreed to accept a plea agreement for the individual who pleaded guilty.

As I was District One Director at the time, and seeing an opportunity for healing, I asked and received
support from the District One Executive Council to establish the Rebecca Payne Memorial District One
Scholarship through the NATA Research and Education Foundation. The scholarship was fostered
through your Foundation, thanks to the efforts of John Oliver and Charlie Redmond, at an official
signing in St. Louis. The first scholarship was awarded at the 2009 NATA Annual Meeting. Rebecca’s
parents, Nicholas and Virginia, were the guest of District One in San Antonio and attended the Pinky
Newell Scholarship and Student Leadership Breakfast.
I always look forward to the Pinky Newell Breakfast- particularly to remember Rebecca with equal bits
of sadness and gratitude. I am proud of our decision to honor her memory through a perpetual
scholarship with the NATA Research and Education Foundation, and to give her parents a tangible
remembrance of their daughter.

William Griffin Leadership Award

Advocacy are now open. Nominees for this award will be members of NATA and have
demonstrated leadership over their careers in ways that reflect Griffin's spirit and example,
including:
 Motivating others, especially AT leaders, to increase political involvement
 Leading by example, showing that one person can make a difference, e.g. through
mentoring or fundraising or outreach to other organizations
 Demonstrating strategic thinking in organizing a legislative or grassroots campaign
 Initiating coalitions to maximize advocacy efforts
 Individually and personally raising the visibility and influence of the profession

Northern New England Conference
The MATA will be hosting the Northern New England Athletic Trainers' Conference at the Double Tree
Inn in South Portland from Friday, June 5-Sunday, June 7th.
It will include a Welcome Reception on Friday evening as well as an Awards Banquet on Saturday
evening (both are included in the registration price). We have a great program lined up and the
keynote address will be given by NATA President-Elect Scott Sailor on Saturday.
Early registration through May 6th is $150 for a Certified Athletic Trainer and $65 for a student.
Registration after May 7th is $175 for a Certified Athletic Trainer and $90 for a student. Please

Student Athletic Trainer Workshop
Springfield College will host the 22nd annual Athletic Training Student Workshop June 28th to July 2nd
2015. The workshop is a residential camp intended for high school students who want to explore
career opportunities in athletic training and related sports medicine disciplines. High school students
from across the country, Europe and Asia have attended the workshop. This intensive workshop
focuses on anatomy, injury prevention, and care of common lower extremity athletic injuries. The
program is designed like a professional continuing education conference. Short lectures and
demonstrations are followed with breakout sessions for hands-on learning. Numerous practice
sessions are built into the schedule for participants to learn and refine their taping skills. The
instructors create a fun learning environment and provide abundant feedback to the students in a
positive manner. The latest information about athletic injury prevention, recognition and management
is presented during the workshop. A popular aspect of the workshop is the hands-on exploration of
cadaver anatomy. Three whole body cadavers and a small class size give the attendees the
opportunity to explore the human anatomy up close. The students also participate in a presentation
about the different career options within athletic training, as part of the curriculum. A low student to
instructor ratio is the hallmark of the program. Each participant is regularly engaged with individual
attention from the instructors throughout the five day camp.
