WIND THE CLOCK

The flow of ECK1 or Spirit is the divine plan we follow. To the
extent that each of us, eternal Soul2 that we are, aligns with Spirit
we will make choices that lead us to a balanced life of ever growing
confidence and contentment. To the extent we allow fear, anger and
ego to make our choices we will bounce from one experience to
another, each one a surprise that we are seemingly unprepared for.
First we have to notice that there is indeed a divine path for us
to follow.
I’m retired now. I have so many stories I could tell about my
diamond path. But early on as my life unfolded, I couldn’t see
around the next corner. I took life as it came. As I learned the teachings of ECK—teachings of karma and reincarnation, of Spirit and
love, and the Sound Current; I looked back on my life and saw a
golden thread connecting my diamonds, illuminating the turning
points of my life. Seemingly random, chance coincidences revealed
a pattern—a flow that was my life.
In college I was dating Debbie. I thought things were going well,
but early in our dating life she needed to be without me. Rather than
just walk away, she set me up with her roommate. How crazy is
that? I have been married to Debbie’s roommate for 44 years. A
match made in heaven.
Or the way I chose my career as a pilot. It was the spring of
1970, the Vietnam War was raging, I had a low lottery number for
the draft and when I graduated college in a few months the government would send me to a jungle where people would shoot at me. I
checked out my options.
At the Air Force recruiting office a sergeant looked in a stack of
computer printouts and said, “Well, we’re looking for pilots, do you
want to fly?”
Crazy. Right? Turns out that the qualities that make one a good
pilot fit me exactly. The Air Force taught me to fly and to teach others how to fly. I did that for four years. Then I smoothly moved into

civilian teaching, taking a position at Gateway Tech in Kenosha in
their thriving career pilot program.
A couple years into the teaching gig the economy turned up
and there were rumbles that the airlines might soon hire more pilots.
My experience was in small jet trainers and now in propeller planes;
the airlines wanted big iron guys. Pilots of cargo planes and bombers, right? So I didn’t think to pursue that path. But my fellow instructor Jim did. He insisted that my jet time was the key and encouraged me and even coached me on the airline hiring process. Of the
dozen instructors at Gateway only Jim and I applied while the others joked about our foolish plans.
Soon I was hired by American Airlines (AA). Two months after
that Jim was hired by TWA which many years later was merged
with AA so he and I ended up working for the same airline. None of
the other instructors moved on.
Chance? Coincidence? Luck of the draw?
I began to wonder. It was about this time I joined Eckankar and
began to learn, through my own experience, to extend my awareness further into the fog of my existence.
How, I asked myself, did I meet my perfect match in a partner?
How was I really given no choice at all but was shuttled into a career that fit me perfectly and gave me too many benefits to count?
Why were these my choices? Karma. Simple. The sum of all
the choices I’d made in my eternal existence up to now put me in
the place where these were mine to choose. I can’t say I was where
I was based on my intent, but it was my doing that got me there.
In ECK we learn to sing the HU3 and to do a spiritual exercise4
daily. Our awareness grows. The fog at our horizon recedes as we
learn to see using our newfound inner senses.
We begin to sense Spirit the way a swimmer feels the flow of
the ocean, the way a mountain climber feels the energy of the wind.
And we learn about the power of paying attention with the focus of
an athlete. And we use this focus to become aware of the spiritual
flow. And in being aware of the flow we can maneuver with intent.
And then we are free.
Many years ago as a young co-pilot I was flying Boeing 727s
from Chicago to Acapulco, Mexico. On our layover I went for a swim
in the ocean. Being a strong swimmer, I thought nothing of it until I
couldn’t swim back to the beach due to a rip tide. I’d heard of them
but never seen one. What to do? I spotted a buoy behind me connected by cable up to the hotel so I could always use the cable to
pull myself ashore. I wasn’t going to die out here.
So I paused. “Huh.” What to do?

How do you progress from experiencing your karmic life pattern, seemingly arranged by chance to taking control of your direction in the eternal life you lead?
In my relaxed state of pause and observation I saw two teenaged lifeguards down the beach a ways pulling tourists out of the
ocean. I swam parallel to the beach and saw that while the place
where I tried to swim in had a fierce flow away from the beach, the
place where the teens were had a strong current towards the beach,
and it carried me in with no effort.
Simple. Wind the clock. Pause. Relax and see what others are
doing down the beach before you drown out here. Listen to Spirit,
increase your awareness of Its flow, and ride it right into the beach.
In Eckankar I look to the Mahanta5, our inner spiritual guide,
align myself with the flow of spirit and trust the answer I perceive. It
will not always be a pleasant outcome; some trials need to be borne
to be learned. But I trust that with each time I pause, listen, reach
out to the Mahanta and act with intent, I get better at it.
Pause. Listen within. Act.
In my early days of aviation one of my experiences had me in
California learning how to be a flight engineer on a 727. So many
switches and buttons and complex systems to learn. In our training
to deal with the myriad of emergencies that could happen, I was
told the very important first step in any emergency.
“Events are like diamonds. Invisible lines connect
them.” The divine plan for every Soul exists. The
teachings of ECK offer the knowledge to see these
connections on our divine path, to put us in control of Gray Harrower
our destiny and to lead us to spiritual freedom.

Wind the clock. The real message was pause. You’re about to do
some serious things like shut off engines or determine why the
cockpit just went dark. Pause. Then act with intent.
