Gertrude Stein Speaks to Edison Alums
“Dead is dead. But dead is not done.
Not over.” This line has stuck with me
since attending Win Wells’s play, Gertrude Stein and a Companion. My attention is grabbed by the “Not over” part of
the quote. That part of our life that is
“Not over” is our Legacy.
Several people have left legacies to the
ECSF trusting the board to administer
their wishes. For example, long- serving ECSF board members Lorraine Lindahl,
Bill Calguire, and Frank Rog all bequeathed funds to the foundation which
are earmarked for scholarship recipients. Their foresight and commitment
continues and will continue to support
the mission of the ECSF..
We need not wait for our death to leave
a legacy as exemplified by Robert (Bob)
Nehotte . Bob’s gift of $30,000.00
(current balance of $38,203.68) has
provided yearly scholarship to the winners since 2005. Please greet Bob and
express your appreciation when you see
him at the Spring Dinner on May 4.
Bill Chorske is another Edison alumnus
who has given yearly scholarships to
worthy Edison graduates, and he continues to mentor the recipients. These
alums are making a positive difference
in the lives of the young people who are
recipients of their generosity. Significantly, both men have expressed that
what they have received is the greater
benefit.
I mention these names only because
their largesse is familiar to me. I apologize to all and any whom I may have
slighted. I learned long ago the danger
of mentioning names. However, I have
yet to find a suitable substitute to replace stellar examples.
The ECSF has embarked on a Legacy
Campaign. We need of funds for many
things such as completing the Alumni
Room which is currently being carpeted, furnished, and fixtured.
ECSF continue to have opportunities to
enhance Edison and Northeast facilities.
We trust that many Edison Alums will
share our dream to support facility improvements, neighborhood enrichment,
and scholarship opportunities.
If the ECSF would get a gift of $100
from each of the 10,000 plus recipients of our newsletter, we
could have a $1,000,000 plus endowment. This and much more
is possible.
Indeed, our lives are “Not over”
when we die. Let’s make a difference now and in the future.
What will be our legacy?

L ETTER FROM THE P RESIDENT
Hello Fellow Tommies,
President,
Michael Iacarella
In Memory Of
Renee Johnson ‘75
Ralph Jasinski ‘50
Orletta (Olson) Nielson ‘52
Bonnie Jones-Trout
The snow is finally ready to give
way to green grass and the temperature is starting to rise with
each passing day, so there is great
energy and things to look forward
to this spring in Minnesota. There
are a lot of energy and great
things to look forward to also at
Edison this spring. By the time we
have this newsletter out to all my
alumni friends our Alumni Room
should be furnished with brand
new carpeting, tables and chairs.
It has been a long, tedious process
working with school officials and
planners but we finally have
something concrete in place that
future Tommies can enjoy for
years to come. We are probably
looking at a grand opening for the
room some time next fall so we
can have time to get the room
situated just right for people to
visit and use. However, now is
the time we need people who
might have certain items that they
would like us to display, to let us
know about them. Edison has a
deep 93 years history and we
would like to honor all the decades as well as we can. So to fill
up the display cases that will be in
the room we need your help in
donating artifacts. I think it is a
great way of honoring the past and
supporting the future if you could
help us with some special pieces of
history of the school and neighborhood.
Edison the building is going
through phase three of its four
phase remodel project in which the
school will be completely air conditioned, rooms are receiving new
lighting and ceiling panels, hallway
ceilings are being lowered, and all
electric service to the building will
be supported by solar energy panels. Also, all water from the
school parking lot and gym roof
will be captured into water cisterns
and the will be used for watering
the football field. Edison will have
one of the greenest high school
campuses in the nation.
The ECSF is having our annual May
Scholarship Dinner at Jax on Monday May 4th. If you have never been
to one of these dinners you owe it
to yourself to come and participate
in a great night of food, fun and
community. All proceeds raised
that night go towards our scholarship fund and one of the best things
about the event is you get to meet
the students whom the money is
helping to support for their and
our future. I always look forward
M ICHAEL I ACARELLA
to this night as its one of the
highlights of my year.
This winter we lost another distinguished Edison alumnus, Gary
Wilson class of 1954. Gary was
true supporter of Edison, northeast and north side athletics for
the majority of his life. He
coached football and baseball at
Edison for decades and they even
named the gym at Farview Park
after him. Gary was a man of few
words but his actions and attention he paid to kids always left a
positive imprint on whomever
he dealt with. He will truly be
missed by us all.
The ECSF is currently looking
for new member to join our
board and get involved with this
great organization. If you have
any interest in belonging to this
group feel free to contact us at
our web site or you can attend
one of our meetings in room 104
at Edison High School every
third Tuesday of the month at
7:00 PM.
I hope the warm spring weather
is to everyone’s liking and that
you are looking forward to a fun
summer.
Go Tommies!

Jake Jaremko, Elk River/Zimmerman
senior, was named Minnesota's Mr. Hockey for 2014-15 on March 8, 2015.
The award has been given for the last 30
years by the Minnesota Minute Men to the
Minnesota high school senior who is considered to be the best player in the State.
The selection is made by a blue-ribbon
panel of NHL Scouts, junior hockey
scouts, high school coaches and select media members. Jaremko, a 4 year starter for
the Elks, scored 25 goals and added 54
assists in 2014-15 .
During his career, he compiled an amazing

My name is George Shindo, Edison High School Class of 1946.
I was born in California and grew up on Terminal Island, off
the coast of Long Beach, California. My parents were Japanese
immigrants and the first generation to come to America from
Japan (called Issei). Prior to World War II, Terminal Island
was a thriving Japanese fishing village. My Dad was a fisherman making long deep sea outings even down to Panama. My
Mom worked in the cannery where most of the women
worked.
George Shindo EHS 1946 After the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the
FBI came and took many of the men, including my Dad, with
no word of where they were taking him. We later learned he was taken to an American
Prisoner of War camp for Germans near Bismarck, North Dakota, on suspicion of being a
spy. He was later found innocent.
On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066.
Americans of Japanese ancestry, including my Mom, and the six of us kids (all American
citizens) were given 48 hours to vacate Terminal Island. You can imagine the frenzy with
Dad being gone and Mom left to move 6 children on her own. We moved into a vacant
Japanese school on the mainland of Los Angeles and lived there until March when we were
forced and transported to Poston War Relocation Center in the middle of the mesquite
forest near Parker, Arizona.
They pulled out a mile square area of trees and put the barracks in. The ground was still
very soft from the tree removal and your foot went into the soil about to your ankle. The
tarpaper barracks had floors of 1’x12’ pine wood with knot holes that let the dust in the
rooms. We had a room that was 20’x25’ for the seven of us. When our Dad rejoined us it
was eight in our room.
The family structure was not kept due to the fact that we ate at the mess hall with our
friends and played outdoors where older kids organized sports teams. We made baseball
fields, basketball courts etc.
Northwest Suburban Conference Championship and 3 Section 7AA runner-up finishes. Jaremko, who was considered by
his coach former North Star Gordie Roberts to be not only an offensive threat, but
also a leader and solid all around two-way
player, has accepted a full hockey scholarship from Minnesota State, Mankato.
School was held in the recreation hall of the blocks so some of the classes could be half a
mile away or more. I felt I was not getting the education that I needed. My brother Frank
left first in October 1943 to go to Edison High School in Minnesota, sponsored by Miss
Virginia Swanson, a missionary teacher, who arranged for him to stay with the Mikkelson
family. I left the camp in September 1944 to attend Edison High School and stayed with
the Mikkelsons for one year, then moved into a room
on 27th Street, off Central Avenue and worked in the
main Post Office in downtown Minneapolis. So I have
been on my own since age 16.
Jake's father, Tom Jaremko, is an Edison
Alum ('80) who excelled in football and
baseball while at Edison who went on to
be named a Division III All-American baseball player at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Tom Jaremko is also a member of the Edison High School Athletic Hall Of Fame.
When I graduated I left to join the army so I could get
the G.I. Bill of Rights. I served my country at the end
of World War II and was later called out of reserves
to serve in the Korean War.
Currently, I live in Covina, California. I traveled to
Minnesota for my 20th class reunion and went to every
reunion since then until the 60th reunion. I made lots
of great friends at Edison High School.

Edison Community & Sports Foundation Thirty Years of Scholarships – A comparison of Then and Now
In 1984, the Edison
Community & Sports
Foundation (ECSF)
began honoring Coaches and Alumni for their
Athletic Achievements
by establishing the Edison Hall of Fame
(HOF). The events
were so successful that
they began raising money to give scholarships to
deserving student/athletes in honor of some
special individuals in order to keep their legacy
alive into the future. The first two scholarships
( for the top female & male student/athletes )
were the Pete Guzy Scholarships, named after
the successful and revered Football and Baseball
coach from the 30’, 40’s and 50’s era. Coach
Guzy also played football and baseball at the
Univ of Minnesota.
For thirty years this tradition has continued and
grown. The number of scholarships has increased to 9 and in some years 11. The financial
support for these scholarships comes from fundraising activities of the ECSF such as the annual
May Scholarship Dinner at JAX Cafe, the annual
Art Solz/Frank Rog Memorial Golf Tournament
held each year in July, and our Charitable Gambling site at Stanley’s Bar & Grill. One unique
source of donations comes from the “Edison
Authors Group”. They have written and published books and donated the proceeds to Edison
for Scholarships. We have also seen a rise in
donations to Edison made by individual Alumni
that are motivated to give because of that warm
spot in their heart for EHS and the Northeast
community that “raised them”. A good example
is the Frank Rog family. After Frank Rog
(Edison HOF and Distinguished Alumni Recipi-
ent) passed away last year, his family honored him
by designating that memorials be dedicated to The
Edison Community & Sports Foundation. Thousands of Dollars came in from his family and
friends. They want to help Edison succeed at continuing the tradition of turning out high caliber
graduates that go on to do good things in life!
Examples that illustrate how graduates have benefitted from these and
other scholarships are
seen in the case of Jeff
Brazil (class of 1985)
and Elise Swenson
(class of 2014)
Jeff Brazil Class of ‘85
He lives in Jackson,
Wyoming with his
wife of 25 years, Sharon, and their 4 kids
(3 girls and 1 boy)
ranging in ages from
15 to 9.
When asked about his experience growing up
Northeast and going to Edison, he can’t imagine
anything better. His parents and grandparents also
grew up in NE and attended Edison. The neighborhood was safe- didn’t need to lock doors, he
had good teachers- Mr Wenzel and Sophie
Boutsioukos and helpful coaches – Art Maillet and
Doug Clausen, the schools were where he made
good friendships, had chances to excel and be
rewarded. He misses it and yet when asked about
coming back to NE Mpls, he emphatically replied
NO - because where he is living is like heaven. He
and his family love the outdoor activities and wide
open spaces.
His advice for students today is “Learn to Live
while you Work”. Follow the three rules of having fun in life; 1. Make Time for Fun,

Elise Swenson,
Class of 2014.
Elise Swenson Class of ‘14 When asked
about the value
of sports in high school, she told of how she was
not a “sporty person” when she came to Edison in
9th grade. The teachers, coaches and her friends
encouraged her to go out for soccer. She did and
completely enjoyed it and by her senior year was
elected a captain of the team. Because of the
ethnic and cultural diversity of Edison, it gave her
a chance to really get to know teammates that
were from other countries and spoke other languages as their native language. As she entered
her Spanish class at the University, she found that
she was ahead of other students that came from
less diverse schools. She already had become
comfortable and somewhat conversational in
Spanish. In addition, the growth to leadership in
activities at Edison helped her develop her sense
of confidence. She felt that she was well prepared for challenging college level work by her
teachers and experiences at Edison.
Her advice to students at Edison today that are
thinking ahead to college or other post secondary
education; start applying to schools and for scholarships early, take challenging classes in High
School including Post Secondary Options
(PSO’S), participate in a variety of extracurricular and service activities. And enjoy those High
School Years.
