Did you know that children can suffer academically if they miss just 10 percent of the
school year? That’s only 18 days or 2 to 3 days per month. We’re beginning this school
year with a renewed focus to get all students to school – on time, every day. We know
there will be days when your child will miss school, especially when he or she is sick. But
missing school adds up to missed opportunities, and can cause students to fall behind academically. Here are some things that you can do to foster good attendance and learning.

Attending school is a child’s first and most important job. Students who attend school
regularly starting in kindergarten are more likely to graduate and find good jobs. Let’s
work together this year as a school community to get all our students to school, on time,
every day. For more information on why attending school is important, please visit
www.attendanceworks.org.

PBIS CORNER
The PBIS team would like to give a special welcome back to all of our students and their families! We are excited
to be back in school and appreciate getting off to a fantastic start!
As you may recall, PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. We are starting our fifth year
with this program at Edison and have seen a continual positive improvement in our school community. Many students are doing a great job of following the Edison Edge by being safe, responsible, respectful, and
friendly. Please ask your student about the Edison Edge and how they are following these expectations at school.
We have also implemented a new On Time program this year. When students are on time to class, it maximizes
learning time in the classroom and provides for a more positive learning environment for all. Teachers have been
handing out Eagle Eyes to students who are following school expectations. These Eagle Eyes can be used for weekly prize drawings as well as other incentives throughout the year. Again, welcome back to another great school year
at Edison Middle School! We look forward to working with your students and helping them feel safe, respected,
and welcome at Edison!
5TH ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE
We will be having our 5th annual all-school fall rummage sale on Saturday,
October 25, 2014. Many of you had rummage sales this summer and have leftover
items. We would love to have those leftover items to sell at OUR rummage sale.
Starting on Monday, October 20 we will have a semi-trailer in our main Alpine
Drive parking lot and will accept donations from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. Acceptable donations are clothing, shoes, books, bikes, toys, household items, sports equipment, furniture, decorations and anything else you might find at a rummage sale. All rummage items should be clean, and if electrical, they must work. The only items we are not able to accept
are refrigerators, air conditioners or anything that has a cost to dispose of. Besides rummage, we will be
having a bake sale, selling popcorn, soda, hamburgers and hotdogs. And back by popular demand,
“Dessert of the Month” raffle. Raffle tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. The winner will receive a
dessert each month for the rest of the school year (November – May)! The proceeds from the sale will
go towards helping to cover the cost of classroom supplies, field trips, and rewards for our students.
Call the Edison office at 391-2450, option 3 with any questions.

AVID
AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, gets organized.
Students in AVID have been becoming familiar with the organizational
skills that will help them succeed from middle school to college.
Students have created their AVID binder, personality crests, and
participated in a multitude of team building exercises. AVID students
look forward to welcoming our AVID tutors to the room in the upcoming weeks and are excited to make it a great year at Edison Middle
School.
A Message From Student Services
Our Student Services Department at Edison, along with Edison administration, participated
in a second tier of support through our Edison Edge/PBIS Program. A small number of students may be nominated for our Tier 2 supports throughout the school year and as parents,
you would be contacted before your student would be able to participate in any additional
supports. Some of these supports might include Mentoring, Social/Academic Instructional
Groups(SAIG), or Check In/Check Out (CICO). Parents who have students participating in
one of these Tier 2 Supports can direct questions to Dawn Orfield, School Psychologist/
PBIS Tier 2 Internal Facilitator at 391-2517.

See Your School Board in Action
Work sessions are generally held on the first Monday of the month, and school board meetings are generally held
on the third Monday of the month. Board meetings start at 5:30 p.m. and are held in room 331 of the District Office Building, 200 S. Broadway. For specific dates, agenda, and past meeting minutes, visit the district website at
www.gbaps.org. Meetings are also broadcast on Green Bay Time Warner Cable’s channel 4 on Thursday mornings at 9:00 A.M., or on digital channel 999 to view On Demand.
Parents’ Right to Know about Teacher Qualifications (for Title I schools)
The Green Bay Area Public School District has many fine teachers, and you have a chance to learn more about
them. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) requires schools to offer parents with children in Title I schools additional information about the teaching staff each year. Specifically, we want you to know you have
the right to ask for information about:
The professional qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher, including:
Whether the teacher has met Wisconsin licensing criteria to serve the grade assigned.
Whether the teacher is teaching under an emergency or provisional status.
The undergraduate and graduate field of study of the teacher.
The professional qualifications of a paraprofessional providing services to your child.
To get the information, call the Human Resources Department at 920-448-2066. You will need to indicate the Title I school your child attends and give the name of the teacher or paraprofessional about whom you’d like more
details. Staff members will check the records and get back to you in a timely manner.
NBC 26 Wants Your Child to be the “Daily Forecast Kid!”

On September 16, for the third year in a row, the Department of Public Instruction has
released the state report cards, which measure four priority areas: student achievement,
student growth, closing gaps and on-track and postsecondary readiness.
Each school receives an overall accountability score and rating based on the four priority
areas and is compared to the state score. In addition, families can find information regarding the demographics of Edison and a comparison of our WKCE reading and math
proficiency rates versus the state average.
You can view Edison’s report card at: http://www.gbaps.org/MS/Edison/Documents/
Edison.PDF If you do not have access to the internet, copies of the report card are
available in the main office.
Edison Parent Network
October 2014
The 6th graders kicked off the school year with a fun after-school party on September
19. Nearly 250 kids attended the event. A BIG thank you to all the parents who contributed. Your cash and gift card donations provided give-aways and prizes. You provided ALL the food and drinks, and we had a great group of adults who spent the afternoon helping at the party.
UPCOMING
EVENTS
Want to get involved at Edison,
but not sure how?
Parent Network is the perfect way to make a great connection between home and school. There
are many opportunities to help throughout the school year, and you can pick your level of involvement. The easiest way to learn about what’s going on or to find out ways you can help are:
Attend Parent Network Meetings. They’re very casual and everyone is invited.
Put your name on the Parent Network email list. Periodically you’ll receive messages with reminders and requests for help. No pressure…just opportunities.
To be added to the list, please send an email to Jen Metcalf: [email protected]
