SUMMER GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM
MEET THE FACULTY
MR. BULGER, Aerodynamics: Intro to Rocketry; How Airplanes Fly; What Goes Up, Must
Come Down!; and Scratch That Code! Mr. Bulger’s professional teaching career has spanned
22 years. During that time he has taught4th grade, 5th and 6th grade science, technology, and is
currently in his 11th year as the gifted resource teacher at William Beye Elementary School in
Oak Park, Illinois.
He spent four summers teaching aerodynamics and computer programming at the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University, and returns to Dominican’s Summer Gifted and
Talented Program for his fourth summer. Currently, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary
Education from Northern Illinois University, as well as a Master’s degree in School Leadership

MR. CHILDRESS, Exploring Photojournalism; Building Model Behavior; Stick to the Script;
Advertising Agents; Extended Day Program: and Chess and Games Club Mr. Marvin
Childress has worked in education for more than 10 years in grades K-8. He has been teaching
for the past seven years in a 1st/2nd grade multi-age classroom, as well as 4th grade at Abraham
Lincoln Elementary School in Oak Park, Illinois. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia
College, and a Master’s degree in Education from National-Louis University.
During his time in Oak Park, Mr. Childress has facilitated the Future Leaders of the World, a
program designed to provide elementary students with the much needed tools to deal with peer
pressure, academic investing, and decision making. He also created the Etiquette and Chivalry
Program, designed to inform boys in grades 4 and 5 about proper manners and behavior, and he
has worked as the Head Coach for the Chess Club for the past seven years. He works hard to
teach the community that chess is so much more than a sport; along with math, chess is a
synonym for life-long learning. Mr. Childress returns to the Summer Gifted and Talented

MS. COCHRANE, Invention Convention: Rube Goldberg; and Scream Machine: Roller
Coasters Ms. Rebecca Cochrane is an instructor for the Summer Gifted and Talented Program at
Dominican University. She holds a Master’s degree in Educational Technology from Concordia
University, endorsement in gifted education, and a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.
Ms. Cochrane has been teaching middle school science in Schaumburg School District 54 for 11
years. She also coaches cheerleading and coordinates the school website.
In addition to teaching, Ms. Cochrane loves to read and watch Chicago sports teams. This is her
fourth year as an instructor for the Summer Gifted and Talented Program at Dominican

MS. COOPER, The Almost Neverending Story; The Brain; and Amazing Race Around the
World Ms. Deborah Cooper has been working in early childhood education for more than 15
years, and her love for learning has continued. Ms. Cooper received her Bachelor’s degree from
Kendall College and her teaching degree from National-Louis University, and she is finishing
her Master’s Degree in Education through Concordia University. Ms. Cooper is the lead teacher
for a first/second multi-age classroom at Abraham Lincoln Elementary in Oak Park. She
believes in teaching to the whole child, and follows the practice that the brain is malleable. Ms.
Cooper’s innovative approaches to education create a nurturing environment and challenges
children to think, not only outside the box, but inside, and all around.
MS. DRESSEL, Monster Math; Architecture: How Buildings Stand; and Einstein Tests Your
Brain2 Ms. Jan Novak Dressel is a returning instructor for the Summer Gifted and Talented
Program at Dominican University. Ms. Dressel has been teaching the gifted population for more
than twenty years, grades 1-5, almost entirely in the Oak Park Elementary School system. Her
BA degree in Education/American Studies is from Knox College and her Masters in
Gifted/Special Ed. is from National University. She holds a certification in Gifted Education.
Ms. Dressel often calls herself a "Brain Trainer" or "Sherpa" and tries to help students navigate
their intellectual journeys. She hopes to ignite their passions to become life-long learners and
problem-solvers. Having raised three gifted children of her own, she understands the importance
of advocating for this unique group of students.
She has lead architectural tours in Chicago and Oak Park for three decades, and can often be

MS. GORE, The Great Debate; and Rhetoric: the Art of Persuasion Ms. Shannon Gore has a
BA in English from Spelman College, and a Ph.D. in Communications from Northwestern
University. She has served as an adjunct professor at Dominican University and DePaul
University. Shannon has also volunteered her time in the hopes of providing a positive role
model for underprivileged youth.

This is Ms. Gore’s seventh year with the Summer Gifted and Talented program. In previous
summers, she has led the program’s computer classes, teaching basic programming skills using
Alice software, and piloted two popular and returning course offerings, The Art of Persuasion
and The Great Debate. She has also served as Program Secretary while in graduate school,
running the Summer Gifted and Talented main office.
She is looking forward to returning for another successful summer. As an experienced lecturer,
Ms. Gore is excited about teaching gifted learners, instilling confidence, promoting clarity of
expression, and providing encouragement to all of her gifted students. She can be emailed at

MR. HEDDEN, Physics & Engineering: Bridge Building; Rocket Science; Newton’s
Academy; and Roller Coasters Mr. William Hedden is a science teacher for the Summer Gifted
and Talented Program at Dominican University. Mr. Hedden has taught for 8 years as a physics
teacher at Thornridge High School in Dolton, IL, in both Honors and co-taught special education
classes. His Masters in Educational Administration was completed at Concordia University in
Chicago, and at Carthage College he received his B.A. in Physics and Secondary Education, with
a minor in Mathematics. Mr. Hedden’’s fellow teachers and administrators say that he is a
creative, flexible, and easy to work with. Students say, “[he] is funny, knowledgeable, and is
always willing to help.”
Mr. Hedden is also experienced in how to meet students of any level and challenge them to
grow. He enjoys reading about current advances in science, and when possible will share them
with his students, friends, and family. It is his goal to use his intuitive knowledge of physics and
math to explain concepts in a myriad of ways, to guide students until they understand and even
enjoy learning about their world. Mr. Hedden is returning for his fifth summer at Dominican and

MR. HOPPER, Writer’s Workshop: the Art of Storytelling; and American Literature: Mark
Twain Mr. Chris Hopper currently teaches writing at Wilbur Wright College. He received his
MFA in Creative Writing from Bowling Green State University where he won the Devine Award
for poetry. Mr. Hopper has had a lifelong love of stories, particularly young adult fiction, which
was instilled in him from a very early age by his mother who was a writer. He loves to read so
much that he once was grounded for two weeks in high school because he became so involved in
the stories he was reading that he missed the school bus three days in a row.
Professionally, Mr. Hopper has been published in The Black Bear Review, Poetry Motel, Array,
The MacGuffin and several other journals. He returns to Summer Gifted for his second summer,

MR. KLANCIC, SketchUp Architecture: Golden Ratio and Rectangle Mr. Mark Klancic has
been a registered architect in the State of Illinois since 1988. He currently resides in Oak Park
where he also maintains his architectural practice, which he founded in 1996. Early in his life he
enjoyed drawing, art, math and the natural sciences. As a child he built forts from large
corrugated boxes, tables and discarded lumber and he often disassembled small appliances to see
how they operated. While studying to become an art teacher at Northern Illinois University, Mr.
Klancic discovered through his art and design classes that he had an innate perception of space.
He then transferred to the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana where he received his
Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies. He completed his studies for a Masters in
Architecture from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he graduated second in his
class and was awarded numerous regional and national student awards. It also was there that he
discovered a love for teaching while serving as a teaching assistant.
In his professional life Mr. Klancic has enjoyed working on a broad spectrum of both residential
and commercial projects including many historic restorations and preservations. His residential
addition and remodeling project won the Award of Merit from The River Forest Historic
Preservation Award in 2009. In the last five years Mr. Klancic has been an active learner of the
three-dimensional modeling program offered by SketchUp. He has implemented the program in
his architectural practice to assist in the design process and uses it as a tool to convey 3D facades
and spaces to his clients.
For the past five years, Mr. Klancic has offered his SketchUp experiences to the Oak Park
Education Foundation and to Lincoln Elementary School in Oak Park to teach the students 3D
modeling, and allow them to explore the design process via an exterior design house project. He
has experienced a great thrill by watching the fresh and unencumbered design by the students.
He is looking forward to expanding the 3D model building program this summer with the
Dominican University Summer Gifted and Talented Program. Mr. Klancic is a returning

MS. KRZYZYK, To Infinity and Beyond!; Ancient Wonders of the World; Jurassic Journey;
and Awesome Oceans and the Mystery of Atlantis Ms. Shirley Krzyzyk has been an instructor
in the Dominican Gifted and Talented Program for over twenty years. She taught in the
Archdiocese of Chicago for thirty-five years and since 2002 at Science and Arts Academy for the
Gifted in Des Plaines, Illinois.

She has a BA in History and a minor in education from Loyola University. Her Masters is in
Special Education with Behavior Level I Certification in LD and SED from the UIC. She enjoys
delving into a variety of topics and is looking forward to the summer program and the
opportunity to meet great young people and faculty members. Ms. Krzyzyk can be emailed at

MS. McCOLE, Physical Education Ms. Jane McCole is one of the Physical Education teachers
for the Summer Gifted and Talented Program at Dominican University. This will be her fourth
year working with the program. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of
Illinois-Urbana, where she played on the tennis team. She earned a Master's in Gifted Education
from Northeastern Illinois University, and a Master's in Teaching from Concordia
University. Ms. McCole previously taught at the Science and Arts Academy, a private school for
gifted students in DesPlaines. Currently, she teaches third grade at Lincoln School in River

MS. NELSON, Word Power Challenge; Best of Roald Dahl; and Young Authors Book Club
Ms. Alison Nelson is a teacher of gifted and talented elementary students, and a lover of literature, poetry, spelling and words. She has held gifted teaching positions at public and private elementary schools, including Elmwood Park District 401 and Oak Park District 97. This is her fifth
summer teaching at the Summer Gifted and Talented Program at Dominican.
Ms. Nelson holds an English degree from the University of Virginia and a Master of Arts in
Teaching from Dominican University. She is currently working toward a Master of Arts in
Gifted Education at Northeastern Illinois University, and substitute teaching at the Avery Coonley School, an independent K-8 school for gifted and talented students in Downers Grove. She
founded and ran student spelling bees at Mann School in Oak Park and Roosevelt Middle School
in River Forest, where she won the Parent/Teacher Spelling Bee in 2007. In her spare time she
enjoys reading, live music and theater, and bar trivia.

MS. PANG, Physical Education Ms. Lisa Pang is one of the Physical Education teachers for the
Summer Gifted and Talented Program at Dominican University. This will be her tenth year
working with the program. Each year, she looks forward to meeting new and returning students.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts and minor in psychology from Concordia University. Lisa also
holds a Masters in Gifted Education from Northeastern Illinois University. Currently she is going
into her ninth year of teaching first and second grade gifted at a private gifted school. In the past,
she presented and attended the Illinois Association for Gifted conference in Chicago. Outside of
the classroom, Ms. Pang enjoys spending time with her family and traveling. She can be emailed at

MR. RICKS, Physical Education Mr. Andrew Ricks earned his undergraduate degree in Spanish
Education from Illinois State University. He enjoyed college so much that he stayed 2 more
years and received his Master's Degree in Peninsular Spanish Literature with a minor in Latin
American Literature. His passion, however, is soccer. In college he walked on to the soccer team
at ISU and played for 2 years.
Currently, he’s completed his 15th year teaching Spanish at Lane Tech College Prep High
School in Chicago. He is also the boys' varsity soccer coach at Lane. As you can see, his passion
truly is soccer and he has been to the World Cup Final in Tokyo, Paris, and Pasadena. He is
married to Lucy, who teaches AP Spanish Language and Literature at Lane Tech, and they have

MS. SIMEON, Chemical Reactions; All About That Base; and Applications in Science Ms.
Tomekia Simeon is a passionate K-12 STEM advocate, and returns to Summer Gifted for her
second summer. She enjoys mentoring and fostering the development of her student’s curiosity
by engaging in thought provoking STEM activities and exercises. From her academic pursuits,
she has learned having mentors has always been an experience that has challenged her growth
scientifically. For this reason, she aspires to offer the same type of experience and opportunity to
the next generation of scientists, researchers and STEM advocates, including the Summer Gifted
and Talented Program Students. She is excited to return for her second summer at Dominican.
Ms. Simeon is a Physical Sciences Oncology Center post-doctoral fellow, a part of Northwestern
University’s Department of Chemistry. Her research focuses on theoretically modeling DNA
sequences which are known to have a higher abundance of specific dinucleotides that contributes
to nucleosome affinity and gene regulation. In addition, she has studied the nature of noncovalent
interactions in supramolecular complexes, such as catenanes and rotaxanes, using molecular
mechanics (MM) and calculations employing ab initio quantum mechanics. Simeon’s research
has been supported by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institute of Health and the
National Science Foundation. In addition to her scientific research, she volunteers her scientific

expertise as a “Science Club” mentor for middle school students at the Boys & Girls Club of
Chicago and also as the science education outreach liaison for the Northwestern Energy

MR. ROCCO, Physical Education Mr. Tom Rocco's professional teaching career has spanned 13
years. During that time he has taught Physical Education all 13 years at William Beye Elementary
School in Oak Park, Illinois. This is also his first year as the PE Teacher Leader for District 97 in
Oak Park, and he was recognized by the Northeastern District of PE teachers as a Highlight Physical
Education program winner for Cook County in the 2012-2013 school year. He is also currently
coaching basketball and badminton at Riverside Brookfield High School, while also coaching
football and tennis in past years as well. He is excited to return to the Summer Gifted and Talented
Program at Dominican.
Currently, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology (K-12 teaching) from the University of
Illinois at Chicago, as well as a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia
University. Mr. Rocco resides in Chicago with his wife, and returns to the Summer Gifted and
Talented learning community for his third summer. He can be reached at [email protected] during the

MR. STERN, Genius of Geometry; and Pi and the Great Pyramid Mr. Joshua Stern is a
returning teacher at the Summer Gifted and Talented Program. He is a graduate of DePaul
University with a BA in Secondary Education in Math and a minor in History. He is excited to
combine his background studies and classroom experience for a dynamic and engaging survey of
math history and contemporary proofs in Genius of Geometry and Pi and the Great Pyramid.
Mr. Stern has served as a TA for both remedial and advanced mathematics courses at DePaul. He
also tutored at DePaul in their learning lab; provided private one-on-one tutoring for middle
school and high school students; and student taught at Alcott College Prep under the guidance of
former Summer Gifted instructor, Mr. Michael Kolody (Genius of Geometry).

MS. WHALEN, Stock Market Challenge; Introduction to Zoology; Lab Science: Eyes of a
Scientist; and Hunger Games Ms. Erin Whalen has been teaching for fifteen years. She began
teaching third and fifth grades, but has since been teaching math and science to junior high
students for over ten years. She is currently employed at Margaret Mead Junior High where she
teaches science to the gifted students in the Magnet program. Additionally she coaches Mead’s
Science Olympiad team and has done that for eight years.
This is her fourth year teaching at Dominican University’s Summer Gifted and Talented

MR. ZACHARIAS, Chess Masters; Logic & Critical Thinking; Chess Puzzlers and
Challenges; and Chess Academy Mr. Matthew Zacharias received his BA in Philosophy from
the University of Iowa in 2006. Since 2008, he has put his passion for logic and critical thinking
into afterschool enrichment classes and summer camps for elementary students in a variety of
subjects. He has taught chess clubs in over 50 schools across Chicago and its suburbs.

MS. WU, Program Director Ms. Janie Wu is the Program Director for the Summer Gifted and
Talented Program at Dominican University. She holds a Master’s degree in Educational Policy
Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has over ten years’ experience
coordinating and directing academic enrichment programs for gifted and talented students at
Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development and the Latin School of Chicago's
High Jump Program. Ms. Wu joined Dominican University in 2011 to serve as a visionary and
results-driven leader for the Summer Gifted and Talented Program.
Ms. Wu has a vested interest advocating for the needs of gifted/talented learners and their
families, providing both resources and opportunities for the gifted/talented community, and
creating an environment where a sense of identity, achievement, and confidence can be
developed. As an educator, she is grateful for innovative and creative C&I opportunities that can
be explored within academic enrichment programs such as the Summer Gifted and Talented
Program, which allow instructors to teach their passions in an environment that supports the
development and joy of teaching, along with the development and joy of continuous learning.
She has had the privilege to work with G/T students from around the world, and gives
recognition to teachers and parents who support, provide, and advocate the best educational

opportunities for exceptional students. Ms. Wu is delighted to be a part of the Summer Gifted
learning community, and continues to raise the bar of excellence and achievement among G/T
