• 2015 TUSD Summer School UHS will be hosting two summer school options, Honors Geometry 1 and 2
as well as Health, beginning May 27, 2015 and ending June 25, 2015. Because Health is only a one
semester class it will end the week of June 3, 2015. Registration for summer school will begin in the next
few weeks and inforation will be sent home when available.
• Changes in PE Requirement Fulfillment
The Governing Board approved a revision to TUSD’s graduation requirements in the area of alternatives
to PE completion. The new policy, which will be implemented in August 2015, will offer students who
participate in approved activities an opportunity to take a written and physical fitness test to earn one PE
credit. The previous version of the policy allowed students to earn their PE credits via corrrespondence
courses, which caused issues for counselors, students and parents. The Curriculum Development Team
is working with Interscholastics, Fine Arts and Secondary Leadership to determine the sports/programs
that will qualifty as an alternative pathway to obtaining PE credit.

• Are you looking for college and career information? Need scholarships? Need reminders to complete
your AzCIS portfolio? The UHS Student Support Services Department has created a Remind 101
account where you will receive a text message alerting you to great events, opportunities, monthly
scholarships and other great information. UHS faculty and staff will not have access to your student’s cell

• Teen Lifeline is a 24-hour Peer Counseling Crisis Line for adolescents. The Peer Counselors are
prepared to discuss issues ranging from relationships and family problems to suicide. The hotline is
staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with Peer Counselors available from 3:00-9:00 p.m. daily. We
encourage teens a call Teen Lifeline to discuss problems before they reach the point of crisis. The crisis
line number for statewide calls is 800-248-TEEN (8336).
• Peer Tutoring Opportunity for Students-Are you interested in helping other students and receiving
community service hours by doing so? We’re looking for UHS students who are able to tutor other
students in geometry, french, spanish, chemistry, physics and biology. If you’d like to volunteer please

• Hillsdale College is offering all sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in study abroad programs
opportunities which will allow students to earn three college credits while traveling to some of the most

AZALAS is offering a scholarship opportunity for 15 graduating seniors. The scholarships are $1,000
each and available to students who will be attending a higher institution of post-secondary education

The Andy Harvey Native American Broadcast Journalism Workshop will be held June 14-20, 2015 at
Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. This workshop has been named in memory of Andy Harvey,
Jr, to encourage the growth of Native Americans in television and radio broadcasting. Write a competitive

Preference will be given to Native American high school juniors and seniors.
The New England Center for Investigative Reporting, based at Boston University’s College of
Communication, is again offering three two-week unique Investigative Journalism Workshops
beginning June 29, 2015. During each session students participate in seminars and work alongside BU
faculty and award-winning local and national journalists on investigative stories that could be published on
the center’s website or in regional and national publications. Students will live on the BU campus and gain
hands-on experience in investigate reporting while developing critical thinking and writing skills. For more

Lewis & Clark College is holding a two-week summer residency workshop for students completing
grades 8 through 12 June 28-July 10, 2015. The workshop is a supervised residential college
experience, modeled after the Language and Thinking Workshop required for all entering students at Bard
College in New York. A typical day includes three sessions during which students gather in groups of 12
with faculty and residential life staff to engage in creative and critical writing and thinking. Students also
present their work at community-wide readings and in a final anthology. The cost of $1,900 includes

Summer 2015 Pre-College Programs at the University of Rochester allow 10th, 11th and 12th grade
students to explore college life up close and personal, have a roommate and participate in a rich variety of

The National Institute of American History and Democracy (NIAHD), a joint project of the College of
William & Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, invites students to apply to their NIAHD PreCollegiate Summer Program in Early American History. Students who will be rising juniors, rising
seniors and graduating seniors by this summer will earn four hours of college credit. Two three-week
sessions will be offered as follows: June 28-July 18, 2015 HIS 217: American History from Jamestown
through the American Revolution; July 19-August 8, 2015HIS 218: American History from the American

The University of Illinois College of Media is offering two new camps. Imagination U is a 5-day
residential program (June 15-19, 2015) for students who define themselves as creative. The camp will
teach students how to use their natural creativity as a marketable skill in self-branding in the business
world. Media Entrepreneurship Camp is a 6-day residential program (June 22-27, 2015) for students
interested in media and/or entrepreneurship. The camp will teach students the concepts and framework of
entrepreneurship mass media, emerging trends in the media landscape and ultimately create a plan to
bring a media entrepreneurship idea to life. Students will be applying the concepts and ideas from the

Thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, St. Bonaventure University will invite 25
high school seniors to participate in Discovery Within Community, a unique four-year program
focused on five traditional STEM disciplines. Every student invited into the program will receive
scholarships of between $3,500 - $6,500 annually for each of their four years at St. Bonaventure in a
STEM major. These dollars are in addition to any other Merit scholarship and financial aid the student
receives. Students will also receive special academic support services and have regular interaction

St. Bonaventure University’s merit-based scholarships are awarded on the basis of a three year
cumulative high school average (freshman through junior year) and SAT or ACT scores. Merit awards

• 2015-2016 Parking Permits are now available. Please see Mr Ranjel in the UHS Administration Office to
pick up and turn in the application. The lottery will be held May 1, 2015. All seniors requesting permits
will be drawn first, then juniors, then sophomores. Good luck!
• Neighborhoods South of Campus will have random stake outs after school by the Tucson Police
Department where they will be ticketing drivers for speeding through the neighborhoods. Please
remember that the speed limit is 25 m.p.h.
