Orchestra” and the second prize at 2 Agosto 2012 international
composition competition in Bologna for his piece Les Temps
Des Pierres for Baritone and Symphony Orchestra. In 2014
received a fellowship by Rachel Hadas in memory of George
Edwards to attend hisresidency at VCCA and the fellowship by
Rockefeller foundation, Bellagio residency.

RAQUEL GARCÍA-TOMÁS AND VÍCTOR DE LA ROSA
Muhammad Qadri Dalal was born in Aleppo, in northern
Syria, in 1946. From the age of three he began to accompany
his father, Sheikh Qadri Al-Sandjekdar, to Sufi
zikr ceremonies. He was also regularly exposed to Arab
classical music and Aleppan folk music, so it was a natural
choice for him to become a musician. He studied oud with
Bakri Al-Kurdi and Nadim Ali Al-Darwish, as well as the violin
and Western music theory. Alongside his musical studies he
also obtained a Master's degree in Arabic literature from AlAzhar University in Cairo, Egypt. From 1966 to 1971 he worked
as a musician on Syrian television, followed by a spell as an
oud teacher at the Casablanca National Conservatory in
Morocco. This gave him a chance to study Arabo-Andalucian
music with Hajj Idriss Benjellun. Dalal subsequently returned
to Aleppo to teach and perform, but he has also toured
internationally, most notably with the Al-Kindi Ensemble. He is
also the author of a number of books on Arab music, including
an oud method, and is a prolific composer of instrumental and
vocal pieces.

UMS 'n JIP is one of the most innovative and accomplished
contemporary music ensembles of our times. Founded in 2007
in Switzerland by Ulrike Mayer-Spohn [UMS] and Javier
Hagen [JIP], it is yet one of the most active ensembles
worldwide performing >100 concerts annually and totalling
>150 commissioned works. UMS 'n JIP explore new musical
and scenic settings for voice, recorders and electronics ranging
from live to digital performance as well as European to nonEuropean music. Since their studies (composing, audio design
& musical performance) in Holland, Germany, Italy and
Switzerland, UMS and JIP have been invited to
This Oud Recital is part of our new project Caprice, that is
dealing with the integration of traditional Arabic music
instruments in the context of Contemporary Music.
In the forefront of the concert there will be a discussion with
the Swiss composer Oscar Bianchi and the Syrian composer
Zaid Jabri on the possibilities of integrating the lute in
Contemporary compositions for western ensembles.

ENSEBLE
Glitched Acquitistions is a journey across a particular universe
in which sound and image are explored through glitch art.
Composer Raquel García-Tomás and clarinettist Víctor de la
Rosa have created a multidisciplinary project in which the
main feature is an improvised musical performance alongside
a video, set within a larger structure where performers
interact with the visual cues.
Raquel García-Tomás is a composer specialized in multidisciplinary creation who is currently pursuing a Doctorate at
the Royal College of Music supported by the Major Van
Someren Godfrey Memorial Award. Major projects include
collaborations with the English National Ballet, the Royal
British Society of Sculptors and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Raquel has received commissions and worked with BCN216,
PluralEnsemble, CrossingLines Ensemble, Barcelona Reed
Quintet, Experimental Funktion, Taller Sonoro and many
others. Since 2008 her works have been premiered and
performed all around Europe.
Victor de la Rosa studied with Joan Enric Lluna and Harry
Sparnaay (bass clarinet) at the Escola Superior de Música de
Catalunya, where he achieved his HonoursBachelor of Music
degree. Then he moved to London to achieve his Master in
Performance at the Royal College of Music where he studied
with Tim Lines, Janet Hilton, Andrew Marriner, and Michael
Harris. Victor has always been attracted by New Music and to
the collaboration with composers. His love for Contemporary
Music has lead to more than 30 premieres of works for clarinet
and bass clarinet by many composers.
The Egyptian Contemporary Music Ensemble (ECME)
Established by the European-Egyptian Contemporary Music
Society e.V in 2010, the ECME presents a series of concerts
every season as Guest Artists of the Department of
Performing and Visual Arts at the American University in Cairo
. This gathering of some of the finest Egyptian musicians from
several generatations, the ensemble has the desire to share
their experience and pass on their practical knowledge by
exposing students to important works of contemporary music.

Oscar Bianchi Born in Milan. He completed degrees in
composition, choir conducting and electronic music at the
Giuseppe Verdi conservatory of Milan. He pursued studies in
composition taking part in master programs such as at IRCAM
- Centre Pompidou and with a doctoral degree at Columbia
University in New York. Vitality, pulsing rhythms, and
virtuosity are the hallmarks of the music created by Bianchi,
who reveals a sensible interest in new phrasings and new
ornamentations, something to be expected from someone
whose ears are finely attuned to the music from all corners of
the globe. A vocal quality, even in his instrumental work, can
strike us as a prominent feature of his music.
Zaid Jabri Born in Damscus. He completed his M.A. degree
with honours from the Music Academy of Cracow in Poland
where he studied composition with Zbigniew Bujarski and his
PhD at the same school under the supervision of Professor
Krzysztof Penderecki. He won the first prize at the Adam
Didur Composers' Competition in

The work Ultras starts with Bassem Youssef's voice, saying
"those dead young men were not just football fans; they were
standing as men in the field and outside of it. Their guilt was
saying the word of truth, whilst many others surrendered
early. Righteous men who kept their word until their death".
Afterwards an original cheering from a previous football
match is played, saying: "when I stop cheering, I would
definitely be dead". This piece reflects the panic, fear, escape,
chaos and agony which broke out when hundreds of thugs
brutally attacked peaceful football fans. Bassam Halaka is a
composer, producer, musician, conductor and performer. His
original style, that is mainly influenced by Eastern and
Western music, creates an inimitable bond between the Orient
and Europe. His compositions are a search for an art that
combines “two souls in one musical body” and that aims to
make the art, which everyone of us has inside himself – the
tradition of our own culture – understandable to people from
other cultures.
