OTHER LEPROSY RESEARCH IN THE NEWS
Leprosy can live in amoebae for
months
Colorado State University researchers has
discovered that Mycobacterium leprae can live for
months inside a protective host amoebae –
common in water, soil and plants – then can
easily transfer to trigger infection.

Researchers discover TB – Leprosy prevention link
Researchers at UCLA have found that a variation of the tuberculosis vaccine offers protection against TB &
leprosy in mice. This could be big news for chemoprophylaxis treatments for joint leprosy & TB control projects.
Chemoprophylaxis refers to the administration of medicines to prevent diseases and infections. In the case of leprosy, we’re funding trials, in India & Bangladesh, to investigate whether or providing medicine to close contacts of a person infected by leprosy will prevent the spread of infection in their network.
