The Entrance Procession During
the Sundays of Lent
In order to recognize the prayer and
penitential nature of Lent, the
entrance procession will take place
in silence with the congregation
kneeling.
ENTRANCE ANTIPHON: Be my protector, O God, a mighty stronghold to save me.
For you are my rock, my stronghold! Lead me, guide me,
for the sake of your name.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: In time of trouble I turn to you, O Lord.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Alleluia, alleluia!
A great prophet has appeared among us;
God has visited his people. Alleluia!
COMMUNION ANTIPHON: They ate and had their fill, and what they craved the Lord gave them;
they were not disappointed in what they craved.
TODAY’S READINGS:
Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46

Helping those in need
Living in Sri Lanka, I see first-hand the wonderful
work of ‘The Society for Upliftment & Rehabilitation
of Persons affected by Leprosy’ or SUROL, for short.
Formed in 1971, various Redemptorist priests have
undertaken the leadership and expansion of the
society in recent years to meet the increasing
demands for its services. It has more than 350
patients in its care, with many more on the waiting
list.
SUROL provides assistance in a variety of ways, such
as monthly financial help for families and school
children and funds for water tanks, electricity, wells,
toilets, bathrooms and other basic amenities. SUROL
also helps with special needs as evidenced by a 17
year-old student affected by leprosy who recently
sought help to complete his final year of school.
Because public transport is not regular
or reliable in his area, SUROL provided
a bicycle and funds for tuition.
The society also fosters and
encourages self-help programs.
A newly married man affected
by leprosy and with severe
clawing of the hands, was unable
to find regular work. His wife
tried to help by sewing but her old and battered
sewing machine had seen better days. A gift of a
new sewing machine has now enabled the man’s
wife to undertake sewing jobs in their local area,
ensuring that she can support her husband and
family.
My involvement with SUROL has been through its
Hamper program. Twice a year, before Easter and
Christmas and thanks to the generosity of local and
international donors, SUROL delivers 300 much
needed hampers to leprosy affected people and
families across Sri Lanka.
Yet, despite the disfigurement and physical incapacity, what I notice most is the sheer delight, happiness
and joy, as people greet the SUROL team when they
arrive. Although limited because of language
barriers, it is remarkable how much actual communication takes place through a smile, a handshake, a
pat on the back or an arm around the shoulder.
In today’s gospel, a leper pleads on his knees before
Jesus: “If you want to, you can cure me.” Moved
with compassion and sorrow, Jesus says, “Of course I
want to” and he reaches out and touches the leper
to bring him healing and new life. SUROL continues
the example of Christ by reaching out with love and
compassion to bring help and hope to people of all
backgrounds and faith traditions affected by leprosy.
When those in need ask us for help, may our response also be positive and compassionate, helping
in whatever way we can.

world’s most vulnerable people.

READINGS FOR
NEXT WEEK
CHESS CLUB: A volunteer to come and teach basic chess
and/or checkers to students during our passive play time
during a recess or lunch break. This might require a once
a week commitment for half an hour when available. All
equipment supplied.
PRAYER GARDEN: We have some statues that we would
like to build a prayer space around in an existing garden
area. The garden will need modifying but we would like
some volunteers to work with children in preparing this
area. Once again, all tools and materials supplied.
COMPANIONS IN THE FAITH
During 2014 the parish conducted a program in the
school called “Companions in the Faith”. Volunteer
parishioners met once a fortnight with a small group of
children from Years 3 & 4 to share with them the
importance of their Catholic faith. If you
would like to help, please enter your
name on the sheet provided at
the church entrance or contact us
at the Parish Office on 6559 8354.
There will be a meeting for all
Companions (old and new) at 9.30am on Wednesday
18th March in the Tenison Centre.
A copy of the Bishop’s message on Lenten Penance
is available at the back of the church.
