Session – The Ten Essential Steps of 3D Animated Scenes
In this lecture Andrei will study a 3D scene with a magical setting, and go through its creation step by step. He will
analyze every stage in the process, from the reference gathering phase all the way to post-production. You will
understand the critical aspects of each stage, how these steps relate to each other, learn some optimization
techniques, and finally find out why these ten steps are so important to the overall end-result. Some Maya and
After-Effects software specific techniques will be touched upon, although they will not be an essential part of the
lecture. Every effort will be made to keep the discussion as software-independent as possible.

What producers already know, but shouldn't hear.
In this conference we explore the struggles brought on by money and why it shouldn't dictate over quality. We
build a discussion, in groups, where a pretend budget is given for re-enacting an animation production cycle. The
groups will reveal advantages and disadvantages to the scenarios where control over the money helps in
leveraging over standards in the animation production cycle to keep businesses afloat.

Session - Managing Large Environments with Autodesk® Maya® and Shotgun
In this session, Dave and André will explain the different techniques and tools used to recreate 19th Paris City
for Ballerina feature animation film. The technique is an hierarchical layout and set dressing system based on
Autodesk Shotgun, which allows multi-site collaborative workflow for digital environments. The tools are designed
to be multi-platform / multi-applications, allowing the artists to re-construct an entire scenery using versioned
published assets for a different level-of-detail. The system was designed to work in various software such
as Autodesk Maya, Foundry Mari, Foundry Nuke, Mercenaries Guerilla Render and Python API.

These two Matte Painters have 18 years of combined industry experience, having recently contributed to
projects such as Prometheus, Star Trek Into Darkness, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Gravity.As
teacher and student at Syn Studio, they're also a currently a formidable Matte Painting team at Rodeo
FX. One is more of an artistic matte painter while the other is more technical and together they will
present their pipelines and demo some of their favourite techniques.

Demo – Live Demo with Justin Yun: Environment Painting
A live demo on Photoshop on how to design environments for VFX backgrounds. During this
presentation, Justin will demonstrate a few rendering techniques that he uses to speed up the process
and also get the look that the client wants by using photo textures, custom brushes, filters, etc… He will
also talk about and show the importance of your foundational skills like understanding composition,
perspective, and values.
