“STOP” Sign Criteria
X value:
3.0m - side road lightly trafficked
4.5m - side road has some through traffic value
Y value:
For 50mph

Notes:
1. speeds are 85th percentile value of private cars on main road;
2. “X” values measured on side road centreline;
3. “Y” distances measured along nearside channel; and
4. a “STOP” sign may be justified where available visibility is less than the Y value
indicated for the speed and relevant X value.

2.4m (Normal driver position)
4.5m (Busier side roads)
9.0m (Maximum for trunk roads)
