Disposal of Liquid Scintillation Cocktails or LSC’s
The disposal of liquid scintillation cocktails (LSC’s) are coming under scrutiny of the EPA for several reasons.
Many LSC’s are flammable, only marginally soluble or insoluble in water, and incorporate high percentages of
non-ionic surfactants. Many LSC’s are now considered hazardous waste and fall under EPA regulations.
All LSC’s that fall into the hazardous waste classification (non-sink disposal types) must be disposed of through
the UAA RSO until it has been determined that any LSC hazardous waste is considered not radioactive and then
will be handled through normal hazardous waste channels.
Why change to less hazardous and safer LSC alternatives?
1.
Many are EPA regulated and as such are hazardous waste.
2.
EPA regulated LSC’s should not be disposed of via the sanitary sewer system.
3.
Many LSC’s have high levels of non-ionic surfactants and are bad for the environment.
4.
Disposal of EPA regulated LSC materials is becoming more expensive.
