COURSEDESCRIPTION:
TheOutdoorRecreationProfessionalmanagesoutdoorrecreationresources,providesoutdoor
recreationopportunitiesandexperiences,orboth.EmergingOutdoorRecreationProfessionals
mustacquireandthenapplythebodyofknowledgenecessarytomanageeffectively.Thiscourse
willintroducestudentstothephilosophy,principles,andpracticesunderlyingoutdoorrecreation
managementbyexaminingagencylandmanagementandprogramadministration.
COURSEOBJECTIVES:
1. Understandthebasictenetsandhistoricalinfluences(botheventsandpeople)inoutdoor
recreationmanagement.
2. Developanunderstandingofthecontributionandimpactofsocialandeconomicimpactsof
outdoorrecreation.
3. Investigateandanalyzetheroleofgovernment,non‐profitandprivatemanagement
agencies.
4. Reviewcharacteristicsandresponsibilitiesassociatedwiththeprofessionalcareersof
outdoorrecreation.
5. Explorefirst‐handrecreationopportunities,managementissues,andprograms.

ClassParticipation:Thisismysubjectiveestimateofyourcontributiontoclassdiscussions,
attendance,etc.Thisfactorwillbeconsideredinthecaseofborderlinegrades(e.g.,a“B”mightget
raisedtoan“A”ORviceversa).
ReadinessAssuranceProcess(RAP):Itisimportantthatyouunderstandseveralkeyconceptsthat
comefromthetextsthatarerelevanttooutdoorrecreationmanagement.Readingshelpestablisha
foundationtobuilduponlaterintheclassandinyourprofessionalcareer.Tohelpensureyouare
readytograspkeyconcepts,youwilltakeashortquizatthebeginningofeachclassforwhich
readingsareassigned.
ClassFacilitation:Wednesdayswilloftenbestudent‐centered,problem‐based,experiential,and
collaborativesessionswerestudentstakeanactiveleadinpresentingcoursematerial.This
strategyisaimedatdevelopingstrongoutdoorrecreationprofessionals,creatingaspaceforactive
engagement.
GraduateStudentPresentation:Youwillgivea15‐minutepresentationonatheoryormanagement
practice,itsfoundationinresearchandapplicationtooutdoorrecreationmanagement.Pleaselet
meknowyoursubjectssoIcanplanandimplementyourpresentationaccordingly.
SiteVisitEvaluationProject:Thisprojectconsistsoftwoparts:aphysicalvisittoanoutdoor
recreationsiteandasummaryreport.Afterinstructorapprovalofyourchosenlocation,youwill
visitandassessthesitebasedoncoursematerial.Thereportmaybedeliveredasawrittenreport
orasapresentationtotheclass.Allproductsneedtoincludevisualrepresentationsofthesite,a
briefsitehistory,asummaryofthemanagementandprogramimplementationofthatsite,your
futurerecommendationsandwhy,andwhatyoulearnedaboutoutdoorrecreationmanagement
fromyourvisit.Questionstoconsider:
