May 2015 - TLDSB Schools

Central Senior Times
Principal’s Message
Now that May is here, I sure hope the consistent warm weather is around the
corner. May is going to be a busy month for our staff and students. Track
and Field practices will commence right away to prepare our students for our
county meet. The Skipping competition, Me to We activities and other fun
and engaging activities with ensure the month flies by. Our students know
that all of the fun activities we have planned for May and June are a privilege.
We expect and look forward to positive student behaviour this time of the
year. To participate in the fun activities, consistent student behaviour is a
must. We have eight great months behind us and enough time has passed
for everyone to have a clear understanding of what good behaviour looks like
and what our expectations of each other are at Central Senior. I look forward
to a fantastic final two months.
With May comes warm weather and with warm weather comes summer
clothing. I want to remind our school community to dress appropriately for
the weather as it is important to protect ourselves from the sun. Further, I
want to remind everyone of our school dress code. Central Senior is a “place
of business” and we are to dress for the “business of education”. School
dress codes have been reviewed with your child, can be found in the front
pages of the agenda and have been sent home recently. Thank you in advance for ensuring your child(ren) dress appropriately to attend school.
Congratulations to our Boys Basketball team for winning the County Championship last month. Thank you to Mr. Ellis, Mr. Khan, Mr. Borland and all of
the student athletes for their hard work and commitment.

Fantastic Card Fundraiser!
Congratulations students, staff and families for contributing to a very successful Big Box of Cards
fundraising campaign. Together we raised over
$4300 to support athletic, musical and technologial
opportunities for our students. A huge thank you to
Heather Finn and our Parent Council for all of their
support with this initative. As always, we could not
have pulled this off without all of the hard work from
Mrs. Manol and Mrs. Cummings in the office.
Thank you to everyone! Big Box of Cards must be
picked up at the school by Friday, May 8th.
Skipping
Hold your hats, Central is going to blow you away with their amazing skipping abilities! Our team is picked and we are practising for the annual skipping meet at I.E
Weldon on May 14. Students have been put into categories; speed, speed team,
double unders, double unders team, freestyle, and double dutch. There is also a
Master's category, in which you skip for 3 minutes! Good luck to all of our skippers,
and go for gold!

Ships Ahoy!
Four students: Aly D, Liam R-F, Allister F, and myself, were chosen to compete as
Central's team for the Cardboard Boat Races. This was held at the Lindsay Rec
Centre on April 13, 2015. Before the actual race, grade seven students constructed mini boats in science class. At the competition, we got two sheets of 4'-8' cardboard, one roll of duct tape, and one container of glue to construct a boat. Once
we placed our boat in the water, Aly paddled as fast as
she could to the shallow area. Our speed was 25 seconds! Some teams didn't even survive before they
said "go!" After Aly was in the boat for two minutes, I
got to go in. The team adds another person to the boat
after two minutes. When Liam got in the boat, our boat
sunk! This was a super cool, and fun day. In the end,
we won second place!

College Visits
Recently students from central senior have been kick-starting their
careers by visiting some special places where kick-starting your career is the #1
priority. That place is college. Students have been visiting
places like Fleming and Durham college to listen to speeches and get hands on
with some equipment , overall it has been a great
experience.

Shhh…
Recently many students took part
in a Me to We event called we
are silent. It is an opportunity to
silence your voice to give others
the chance to speak when they
may not usually be able to.
Students may have gone the first
period without speaking and
some even went the whole day!
We thank all the students
who took part!

Track & Field
Attention all athletes!
It is your turn to show off your athletic abilities! That’s right, it’s that time of year to break a sweat in
the sandpits and on the track. If you are interested in joining the track and field team, sign up in
Mr. Bratina’s room. There is practice everyday at 12:30-1:00pm. Good luck Centurions! Don’t forget to put your game face on! It’s not all fun and games- actually, that’s exactly what it is!

Are you participating in a summer sport? Maybe soccer or baseball but need to get fit before
you embarrass yourself on the field? Well, Central can solve that problem for you as we offer
Cross fit. It’s a great way to reach an athletic goal, or just to go out for fun! We accept all fitness
levels whether you are beginner or advanced. You workout for 30mins but that time passes quickly
when you are breaking a sweat doing the amusing obstacle course.
See you there every Wednesday and Friday!

Running Club
Running club is a great way to stay fit and healthy for summer. Running club takes place every
Tuesday and Thursday morning but make sure you're here by 7:20 or you might be left behind!
You can tell it's enjoyable when 20,or more! People come out. The route we take is
about 4km so if you join remember water. In case you're wondering how this whole
thing started Mrs. McDonald had a bunch of requests from cross country runners and
boy are we happy. Mrs. McDonald inquired "I think we've had a fabulous response,
people are enjoying it more than cross country! Wow! So if you're willing to have fun,
be active, and feel refreshed come to running club!
TIMSS Assessment
As many of you know, Central Senior took part in the TIMSS assessment, but
what is the assessment? Well, first of all, TIMSS
stands for Trends in International Mathematics
and Science Study. Countries use TIMSS for educational improvement by evaluating the effectiveness of their mathematics and science teaching and learning in comparison to other countries
around the world. Ms. King’s and Mr. Dowell’s
were randomly selected to take part in this test,
let’s see how well our school did compared to
others!

Earth Summit
Five students were selected to participate in the annual Earth Summit day at Camp Wanakita, Haliburton. They were there to represent Central Senior School and how we can help the environment. They
have brainstormed many ideas to help the school be easier on the environment. But for now, those ideas
will have to remain a secret! Some activities they did there was; tree identification, top chef (to learn
where our food comes from) and a fun afternoon at low ropes. All and all, it was a great day to learn!
