Inside this issue:
Principal’s Message
Happy Spring, everyone! I‟m happy to share some of the many great things happening
here at Monck.
Congratulations to our Monck bands, two of which have recently won gold and silver at
MusicFest. Our Jazz Band will be heading to the MusicFest Canada Nationals, a very exciting opportunity for our young musicians! Congratulations to Karen Lonsdale and all
our young musicians, who have been so dedicated in practicing and performing.
As a school, we recently engaged in some learning about Autism Awareness. Facts about
Autism were shared during morning announcements, classes were engaged in various
learning activities in their rooms, and on April 2 nd, we had an assembly during which students sang, spoke and participated to “raise the flag” for World Autism Day. Thank you to
Cheri Buie and the students involved in making this assembly so informative and enjoyable.
Congratulations to all our Battle of the Books teams, who did very well in both our school
and area competitions. What a great program to promote the wide reading of great
books! We look forward to our French Battle of the Books, coming soon.
Monck is a place of learning for all. Our educators have been engaged in ongoing learning related to both our Math and Safe / Accepting School Goals. For instance, many of
our teachers have been learning about embedding “Number Talks” into math classes in
order to increase students‟ ability to think flexibly about numbers and use mental math
strategies. We‟ve also been learning about the importance of “Feeding All Four” to address student and staff wellness.
A big thank you goes out to our dedicated School Council for the many things they do
for Monck! Please know that our School Council is hosting an exciting event for families
on Earth Day, April 22nd. Be sure to mark your calendar and come to “Incredi-Brent‟s
Magic Show” in the Monck gym. Prior to the magic show, there will be vendors, games
and refreshments available. Admission is by donation; all proceeds will go toward our
Playground Enhancement Fund. We look forward to seeing you there!
April‟s character trait focus is „Citizenship‟. Citizenship is shown by making responsible
decisions, caring about others and by contributing positively to our community. Let‟s
work together to teach our children about the importance of developing a strong sense
of citizenship.
Reading to and with your child(ren) each day promotes wellness and literacy development. It‟s a great way to enjoy time together, while at the same time, encourages a love
for literacy that benefits a person in many ways for a lifetime!

The staff and students are planning a
number of green activities this month.
These include: turning off the lights
and electrical devices to save energy,
school yard clean up, litter-less lunches
and an Earth Day assembly.

Now that the spring weather is upon us, students are reminded to ride safely and wear a helmet.
Also, please remember that students are to
get off their bikes, scooters and skateboards
once they are on school property.
EXTRA CLOTHING
Please send extra clothing with your children,
as this can be a very wet and muddy time of
year. Your child will appreciate having some
extra dry and clean clothes, especially socks,
shoes and pants. We encourage you to send
your child to school in rubber boots!
Monck’s Dress code
Our school is a place of learning and
we encourage students to dress within
the expectations of our Board Dress
Code, as seen in the school agenda.
Learning the fundamentals of proper
dress at an early age will provide the student with a valuable life-style habit. Dressing appropriately for a variety of
situations shows that a student has a high degree of selfrespect and respect for others. The school dress code assists in the creation of a positive learning environment.
Inappropriate dress distracts and diverts us from our primary purpose — LEARNING!! Administration will make
final decisions regarding appropriate dress. Students that
need to change clothing may change if they have extra
clothing at school, or call home to have a change of clothing brought to the school. Thank you for your support.
From the Library
The library would like to thank Ruth Jones, temporary
library clerk, for her assistance in the library this past
month. Library staff and students were able to benefit
from her vast library knowledge acquired while working
at BMLSS.
Thank you for your continued support with our Scholastic book fairs. With the profits from the previous two
book fairs, we have been able to purchase many new
books, both French and English. Our next book fair is
May 6-8, 2015. This will be “buy one book, get one free”.
This would be a great opportunity to purchase books for
the summer reading (including long car trips!)
Battle of the Books
Our school level Battle of the Books competition has now finished. Many students
in grades 4-8 participated this year. Congratulations to all the students who
„battled‟. The Regional Finals for the north
are scheduled for March 31 (Juniors) and
April 1 (Intermediates) at the Rene Caisse
theatre. The top two teams from each division will participate in the Trillium Lakeland District School Board finals
on April 8th.
The Junior level champions were: The New and Improved Rainbow Unicorns (Carys C, Abi H, Lindsay P,
Abbi H) . The Intermediate level champions were: Invisible Multi-Coloured Super Prickly Warrior Hedge Hogs
(Julia F, Laken H, Jessica T, Lauren T). Good luck to both
teams!

Spin into spring & Take the
edge out of hunger
Monck Public School staff and students, along
with Edge Conditioning and Trysport would
like to celebrate Spring by giving back to our
community. To do this we have planned to
incorporate fitness, family and fun by hosting
a day of spinning at Monck. On Friday, May
8th from 8:45 a.m. until 3:15 p.m., students in grades 5—8
will be spinning alongside their parents, grandparents,
teachers, aunts, uncles, or family friends. We will have 4
spin bikes on our stage for the entire day. Those that
would like to spin with their family member are asked to
bring a donation for the Manna Food Bank and sign up
for a 15 minute time slot. Our goal is to have 100 spinners and 100 donations for the Food Bank!
Come out and join us for a spin, help others in your community, and spend time with family. On May 8th, put on
your t-shirt, shorts and running shoes and help take the
Edge out of Hunger!

Craft Club
There have been 40 - 60 students enjoying Craft Club
each week with Mme Goodyear and Mrs. Murray. Students have been learning to knit, crochet, sew, weave,
and make elastic bracelets. We would like to
say a big thank you for all of the donations
towards our club. Still needed are knitting
needles in sizes 4 - 6, crochet hooks, elastics
for the elastics kit and large sewing needles. If you have
any of these items to spare, we would be happy to receive them.
