Welcome to the March 2015 edition of the Edinburgh and Lothian bulletin
I hope you have had a lovely February. This month’s bulletin includes information
about a number of upcoming events. If you are looking for funding there are two
funding fairs being held soon – one in Edinburgh and one in East Lothian. These
are a great way to chat to funders and get tips for completing application forms.
As always I hope there will be something in this bulletin to interest you. If you
would like any of your group’s news, events or volunteering opportunities

Age Scotland Updates
Power Of Attorney campaign
As part of our Power of Attorney awareness raising campaign, Age Scotland’s
communication team have produced a lovely new video, featuring Rebecca
Dickson, the project officer. Rebecca answers the most common questions about
Power of Attorney. Please feel free to watch, share and enjoy!

Upcoming Events
Health and Wellbeing Event
Viewpoint will be holding a Health and Wellbeing event at their sheltered housing
complex at Lade Court, 4 Bakers Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh. The event
takes place on Thursday 26 March from 2:00-4:00 pm. Refreshments will be
provided.
The event is aimed at older adults and aims to provide information on issues of
wellbeing that affect people as we age. All older people will be welcome.
Advice will be available on crafts, getting into computing, re-cycling, household
repairs and health issues. There will also be a representative from Age Scotland
who will provide information on a variety of issues as well as Viewpoint’s Welfare
Benefits Advisor.

Working Together to Prevent Falls for Health and Wellbeing
This FREE event is being organised by the Improvement Network for Integrated
Care & Support in partnership with the Care Inspectorate, Scottish Care and The
National Falls Programme.
It will take place on Monday 27th April 2015 at Perth Concert Hall.
A day for those involved in the commissioning, planning and management of:

Day care services
Housing with support
Care homes for older people

Inspiration Today Hope for Tomorrow: Spiritual Health -Whose Business Is
It?
This FREE one day event is being organised by Faith in Older People, The
Health and Social Care Allicance, Animate and the NHS Chaplaincy.
It will be held on Monday 16th March 2015 from 9.00am – 4.30pm at
Renfield St Stephen’s, 260 Bath Street, Glasgow G2 4JP.
This conference aims to provide encouragement to all those interested in
supporting individuals to have more of a sense of meaning and purpose in their
lives.
You must book a place by 11th March at the latest. You can do this online at

‘Better off Late, Than Dead on Time’ Play and Workshop
Generations Working Together, are pleased to announce that, in partnership with
The City of Edinburgh Council, they are hosting the production of ‘Better Late,
Than Dead on Time’ an intergenerational Road Safety Play and Workshop.
The performance looks at the impact of driver and pedestrian behaviour through
the eyes of three generations in one family. The issues are dealt with sensitively
but presented in a realistic and humorous way to focus awareness and
discussion with the audience.
It will take place on Wednesday 25th of March, 9:30am – 10:30am at the Main
Council Chamber, City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1YJ
This will be on a first serve basis. Please note participants should be aged 13+.
If you are able to stay and hear more about GWT, what they are doing nationally
and how you can engage with your Edinburgh and Lothian’s Network, there will
be a short information session following the production.

Third Sector Forum in East Lothian
Head along to STRiVE’s Third Sector Forum for a chance to network with other
organisations, find out what's happening within the sector and get up to speed
with issues affecting your organisation.
It will take place on Tuesday 10th March from 9.30am-12noon at the STRiVE
office, 56 High Street, Tranent.
Sessions include: ‘10 years since the Freedom of Information Act; how can you
get and use information to support your purpose?’ and East Lothian Council’s
‘Introducing 'People's Voice -Our framework for engaging people and
communities'.

Art tutor
Art tutor
I have been contacted by an art tutor called Marie Fairley who has asked me to
let our member groups know that she is available to run painting classes in oil,
acrylic and mixed media for all levels of ability. She has previous experience of
working with over 50s and is particularly interested in emphasising the
therapeutic and social benefits of painting with the possibility of exhibiting.
She is able to provide classes in Midlothian and South Edinburgh on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Fridays. She can provide a list of her training and experience on
request.

Opportunity to learn French or German
New French and German courses are starting in Edinburgh from March! Speak
Out courses are fun and relaxed. They’re designed to build confidence in a
social environment with like-minded people. As part of each course, there is an
optional trip to Paris or Hamburg. Beginner French will be on a Tuesday at
10.00 am in the New Town. Beginner German will be on a Monday at 3.30pm
also in the New Town. Other levels are available too. The 10 week course is
£140.

private course!

Safe Home Ireland
Brenda Fleming, Development Officer at The Safe Home Programme Ltd, St
Brendan’s village, Mulranny, Co Mayo, Eire has asked me to circulate her
details. She has advised me that they assist qualifying older Irish born emigrants
to return to secure accommodation back in Ireland. She will be coming to
Scotland in late March and is looking to promote their organisation. If you would

Buddy Swimming for Over 50s in West Lothian
Have you ever wanted to feel more confident in water? Had a fright when you
were younger? Never had the time to get started?
Well here is an opportunity for you to come along and join in with new Buddy
Swimming session. You will be met at the reception by one of the Ageing Well
Volunteers who will provide you with the support and encouragement you will
need to feel more comfortable in the water.
Sessions are available at:
