EMAS FIELD TRIP TO BRISTOL

EMAS FIELD TRIP TO FRAMLINGHAM
AND ORFORD CASTLES, SUFFOLK
Saturday, 16th May 2015
Apart from being set in stunning locations, Framlingham and Orford Castles are particularly
interesting because of their defensive positions and the innovations they display in castle construction.
At Framlingham little remains of the first early 12th century castle, as it was virtually dismantled by
order of King Henry II. In the late 12th century the castle was reconstructed in the latest concentric
style from Europe and originally the Holy Land. It consisted of a curtain wall and thirteen towers.
Later alterations and additions were made by the Norfolk family in the Tudor period, resulting in the
unusual sight of amazing Tudor chimneys on top of the 12th century towers that one sees today.
Lunch will be at The Crown Hotel in Framlingham. A menu is included, from which you can make
your lunch choices. (There are few lunch venues in Framlingham and, as there is a lot to see at the
castle with exhibitions etc., eating in Framlingham will suit everyone’s preferences).
In the afternoon we will go over to Orford, where an austere castle keep dominates the former port and
the Ness at Orford. This 18-sided polygonal keep with three turrets was the latest in keep
construction, as a polygonal keep could not be so easily mined as a square keep. Henry II ordered the
construction of Orford Castle from 1165 onwards, but the original castle would have included the
‘modern’ keep surrounded by a curtain wall and towers, as at Framlingham.
A coach will leave from beside the Embankment Tube Station at 8am.
The cost of this trip is £31.00 for members of EMAS and £34.00 for non members. Entry fees are
