USAGE OF BRUKER NMR INSTRUMENTS Informations Sylvie Bilodeau : Antoine Hamel : Cédric Malveau : Local E-215, #5857 Local E-726, #3933 Local E-215, #1966 General regulation 1.1 Access to NMR instruments is strictly reserved to graduate students, post-doctorates and researchers, for group researches. All work outside of laboratory research projects must be performed by NMR personnel and will be invoiced. 1.2 All persons desiring to use one of the NMR instruments must have followed beforehand the introduction course matching the instrument to be in use. These courses must be given by Ms. Sylvie Bilodeau, Mr Antoine Hamel, Mr. Cédric Malveau, Mr. Phan Viet or by a user specifically named by Mr. Phan Viet. Before being authorised to use the instruments, the person must successfully pass an aptitude test. 1.3 All persons using one of these instruments must inevitably sign the electronic user usage registry. It is accessible on the web site http://132.204.72.127. On this site, users will find the help file. This file gives all information about the way to make reservation and restrictions. 1.4 A user who thinks he won’t be able to use the instrument during his reserved period must cancel his reservation as soon as possible. All users must be punctual and respect the period of the next user. 1.5 The time used to assure punctuality during reservations is the one kept by the clocks in the NMR room. 1.6 Your login name and password must be confidential. It is forbidden to use the login and password of other user to extend your reservation time. 1.7 All people that reserves a period for an NMR instrument is responsible of it during the aforementioned period. They are also responsible of the state of the material given to them for use like: printers, tracing tables, “spinners”, etc… All abnormality must be reported. 1.8 During open hours, telephones in locals E-714, E-720 and E-724 are reserved exclusively to NMR personnel. 1.9 Roger Gaudry building: Outside of open hours, all doors to NMR locals must be closed and locked. At all time, do not use door E-720. Joseph Armand Bombardier building: The door to the NMR local must always be closed and locked. 1.10 When an instrument is in failure, the availability of other instruments will be decided by NMR personnel. Specific regulations for use of NMR instrument during open days 2.1 On all instruments, reservations must be done a maximum of two hours beforehand on the same day. 2.2 The time limit one can reserve is variable on each instrument. Check reservation rules on the electronic user usage registry. 2.3 There are no restrictions as for the number of daily reservations a person can make. However, NMR personnel maintains the right to impose a limit to a person that would abuse of this. 2.4 On all instruments equipped with a probe allowing it, it is possible to make routine experiments like 13C, 19F, 31P or 1H spectrums, assuming that the time necessary for analysing does not exceed the period of reserved time. It is thus better to use period before 8AM and after 6:30 PM for 13C spectrums, these periods being longer. Specific regulation for use of NMR instruments during nights and weekends 3.1 Reservations for overnight experiments (after 5PM) are available from 3PM on the same day. 3.2 The length of overnight reserved periods varies according to the maximum number of allowed consecutive periods. Consult the help file on the reservation web site. If an instrument is free at the end of a period, the experiment in process can be prolonged up until another user arrives. You must leave guidelines for the next user. 3.3 To insure the availability on an instrument for experiment requiring long acquisition time, on weekends or on public holidays, users must settle an agreement with NMR personnel. 3.4 All abnormality, like a broken tube in a probe, must be reported to the NMR personnel or a note explaining the problem must be left on the instrument. An “OUT OF ORDER” note must be placed on the instrument to alert other users not to use the spectrometer. Specific regulation for special experiments 4.1 A user desiring to undertake a special experiment like: T1 measurement, variable temperature, NMRs with other nucleus than the ones specified in article 2.5 must advise a member of personnel. A period of time, decided by two parties, will be especially devoted to this special experiment. 4.2 The experiment must be planned a few days in advance and regulation established routinely will not be applicable in this case. Operation regulation 1) It is mandatory to use superior quality NMR tubes (528pp, 535 pp). The minimum volume of Deuterated solvent is 0,7 ml t. The autosampler’s tubes must not be cut. 2) It is important to filter your solutions on glass wool before putting them in the NMR tubes because impurities will make the lock unstable and will deteriorate its resolution. 3) It is forbidden to prepare your samples in NMR locals. 4) It is mandatory to wipe the exterior of the tubes before inserting them in the magnet. 5) It is forbidden to wear laboratory gloves inside NMR locals. 6) A user must avoid having metallic objects like pencils, spatulas and keys in pockets when approaching the magnet. Hold far from the magnet, all metallic objects like chairs with wheels, tools, gas tanks, etc… Be careful with watches and credit cards. 7) Do not leave staples, clips and other metallic objects in NMR locals. 8) It is forbidden to eat or drink in NMR locals. 9) It is forbidden to smoke in NMR locals, 10) It is forbidden to change the settings of screens. These have an energy saving mode. To open them, you only have to move the mouse. 11) Before leaving NMR locals, the user must assure his work station is clean 12) At the end of the experiment, the special “spinner” must be put back into the probe. The “stdby” and “fine” buttons situated on the “shim unit” must stay open. All others must be shut off.
