responsive infrastructure. Multitude of technologies is being deployed to realize
Saudi Aramco has awarded the final package to a joint venture of Acwa
Holding of Saudi Arabia and Air Products of US for gasification combinedcycle (IGCC) power project at Jizan in Saudi Arabia.
The JV will build, own and operate the air-separation unit (ASU)/oxygen
supply package. Air Products will design and build the unit using its proprietary
technology.
The facility will be majority owned by Acwa Holding (75 percent), while Air
Products will have 25 percent stake.
this smart vision.
One may envisage a smart city as the one that uses smart technology to become
better or a more sustainable city. The idea may vary from using data more
effectively to plan against changing climate patterns to installing superfast fibreoptic broadband to become a knowledge-led economy.
Cities that use smart technology require innovation to revolutionize core
processes. It is information rich and implemented with standards.
On completion the complex will supply 75,000 tonnes per day (20,000 tonnes
of oxygen and 55,000 tonnes of nitrogen) for 20 years to Saudi Aramco's
refinery being built in Jazan.
The project scope involves the construction of a 2400MW integrated
gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power plant, next to the Jizan refinery.
The gasification unit will produce about 2.11 million normal cubic metre units
an hour (nNm3/h) of syngas.
In Gulf, thousands of projects in the smart city programme are being managed by
government-led task force. Initiatives include programmes covering smart city
mobility, smart power grids, smart networks and meters, smarter energy and
water services, smart parking, smart kiosks and smartphone access to
government services and more.
As part of these smart initiatives, governments are getting involved in shaping

Kuwait Finds Four New Oilfields in North, West Kuwait
Kuwait Finds Four New Oilfields in North, West Kuwait. Kuwait has
made a discovery of four new oilfields in the north and west of the
country, said a top oil official.
Hashem Hashem, the chief executive of state-run Kuwait Oil Co
(KOC), said exploration activities have moved ahead despite oil
prices dropping nearly 50 per cent since last June.
"The (new) fields will be developed and production will start briefly,"
he said, adding that the new discoveries had been announced after
two years of exploration activities had proved positive. He did not
give production rates of the new oilfields. Two reservoirs for
unconventional oil in the north of the country were also discovered,
Hashem said.
8
The grades found in the fields were both light and heavy oil, with
preliminary results showing "huge commercial volumes".
Kuwait plans to boost its oil and gas drilling rigs by 50 per cent by
early 2016 as it seeks to boost crude and gas production despite
low oil prices, Hashem said in February. Most of Kuwait's
production is from Burgan, the world's second largest, which is in
the southeast of the country. Kuwait aims to increase its current
output potential from around 3 million barrels per day (mbpd) to 4
mbpd by 2020.
The country expects a big boost from its northern fields and plans
later this year to invite international oil firms to bid for technical
service agreements in the area.

RE100 Initiative: Indian Firms May Go Green
I
ndian companies could soon shine in a
global scenario with firms like Nestle
Mars, Philips and Ikea that plan to switch
to green energy sources as part of the
RE100 initiative, under which 100 large
firms will rely exclusively on solar, wind,
biomass or small hydro plants for their
power requirements by 2020.
Re100, convened by international non-profit
agency 'The Climate Group' and
sustainability firm 'CDP', has 15 members at
present, including Elion Resources Group,
one of China's top private enterprises, which
has committed to rely entirely on renewable
energy by 2030.
"We are talking to a number of Indian
companies and will announce a name in two
weeks' time," said Mark Kenber, CEO of The
Climate Group. According to Kenber, there
are a number of reasons for focusing the
campaign on India, the primary one being
that companies suffer disruption of business
activities due to power cuts and end up
paying a lot more for expensive back-ups.
"By investing in third party power purchase
agreements or installing their own power
sources, companies get to lock up not only
long-term electricity prices, which helps
them save, but also earn returns from their
clean installations, as is happening in
China," Kenber added.
A new report, 'China Analysis 2015', by The
Climate Group points out that the (Chinese)
central government increasingly sees the
opportunity for stimulating businesses —
the biggest end-users of energy — and has
introduced a number of incentive schemes
for renewable energy investment that are
already attracting interest.
RE100's founding partner, Ikea, has
committed to producing renewable energy
equivalent to at least 70% of its consumption
by 2015 and to producing as much
renewable energy as it consumes by 2020.
This includes the energy used by the
company's own manufacturing operations.
By 2013, half of IKEA's stores in China had
gone solar, with yearly electric energy
production now topping 1.6 million kWh.
Several companies in China, including
L'Oreal and P&G, have taken the initiative to
secure renewable electricity through
agreements with their local electricity
providers. "China has provided support for
the demand side of the energy equation by
giving subsidies to corporate for in-house
power generation. The returns are between
5% and 20 per cent. Companies do it purely
for economic reasons," he said, adding that
when policy and incentives are put in place,
businesses respond. Certain cities and
regions are also pioneering new forms of
purchasing contracts that provide
companies with opportunities to source
green electricity directly from the grid, says
the report.
China, the world's leading investor in
renewable energy, increased its investment
to $89.5 billion in 2014, up 32 per cent from
that in the previous year. This was nearly 73
per cent more than the United States, the
next largest investor.
Just like China, Kenber said, India too
should put more emphasis on the demand
side, by providing companies with more
subsidies for their own production, as
opposed to only supply side or large utility
scale projects.
IRENA Launches Tool for Renewable Energy Projects
I
nternational Renewable Energy Agency
(IRENA) has launched a new tool called
'The Project Navigator' to provide a
comprehensive platform for the effective
development of renewable energy projects
worldwide.
The Project Navigator tool provides project
developers with the knowledge, tools, case
studies and best practices needed to
support the successful completion of their
projects, according to IRENA. It is available
online.
The tool has been developed with the aim to
convert all promising renewable energy
ideas into projects, which does not get

materialized due to a lack of knowledge or
expertise on how to move them forward.
Successful projects are characterized by
robust technology data, strong project
proposals, and the inclusion of financing
instruments and information for investment
analysis.
“This new tool makes it easier for project
developers to initiate, develop, fund and
complete renewable energy projects around
the globe,” said IRENA Director-General
Adnan Z. Amin. “It helps them overcome the
barriers inherent in starting projects and, in
doing so, facilitates the deployment of more
renewable energy worldwide.” The Project
Navigator aims to increase the percentage

The financial navigator section also allows
users to search for funding by renewable
energy type and region, drawing from a
database of funds available for project
financing.
“This is a perfect tool to help developers who
have a strong idea for a renewable energy
project, but limited knowledge of project
finance,” said Roland Roesch, IRENA
Senior Programme Officer and Project
Navigator lead.
