China Study Abroad
Dr. Sam Mannan is offering a new study abroad this summer in China for CHEN 455 (Process Safety). It
will take place in summer session I – June 15th to July 3rd.
Attached is the brochure for the trip. Please help me spread the word to your students who may be
interested. This class can be used as part of the Safety Certificate program!
AGA/ISHM Scholarship Program
This now is the second year for our second scholarship - the AGA/ISHM scholarship program.
It is with great pleasure that the International School of Hydrocarbon Measurement (ISHM) can continue to offer
this scholarship program, made possible with the generosity and support of the American Gas Association
(AGA). By working through ISHM as a vehicle to reach more potential candidates, AGA is expanding it scholarship
program by working with ISHM for at least the next four years. Through a donation of funds, AGA will offer four
$10,000 scholarships for students in the final four semesters of a four-year program and four $3,000 scholarships
for students in the final three semesters of a two-year program. There will be one scholarship award per year for
four years.
The unique aspect of this program is a focus on students who are preparing for a career in natural gas
measurement after graduation. The measurement departments for the natural gas industry are the areas that
concentrate on the gas quality, gas quantity or volume and the associated activities that surround this part of the
gas industry. Metering, laboratory work, gas properties, gas controls, regulation, natural gas storage facilities, LNG
systems and the like are all areas that are addressed by gas measurement employees.
I’ve listed the criteria below:

Are enrolled as a full-time student in good standing in a four year degree program of a College;
·
Are enrolled in a program studying or directly related to the study of hydrocarbon measurement;
·
Have successfully completed four semesters of study;
· Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in the semester prior to each distribution in accordance with
the standards set by his/her College;
·
·
Excellent leadership and communications skills;
Strong interest in pursuing a career in natural gas industry
I have also included an application form which needs to be filled out completely and legibly (if written). A lack of
information could disqualify the applicant from consideration. This needs to be returned by MAY 15, 2015.
Formula SAE Team Recruitment
Formula SAE is an international collegiate design competition where engineering teams design,
construct, test, develop, and compete with a formula-style prototype racecar. These open wheeled, open

cockpit vehicles acquire points as they are evaluated in both static and dynamic events. Texas A&M has
won 1st place five times and 2nd place three times within the last 16 years.
Here at Texas A&M, the Formula SAE team is a MEEN 401 / 402 senior capstone project, in which
students gain design, manufacturing, and project management experience. This project gives mechanical
engineers a chance to apply everything that they have learned throughout their undergraduate career.
Additionally, students get to build a racecar that competes, in Texas A&M’s name, at an international level
against approximately 80 other universities. Not only is an understanding of vehicles and manufacturing
gained, but also students get to be a part of Texas A&M’s successful racecar family!

Entrepreneurship Consulting with Jim Donnell
James M. (Jim) Donnell ‘82, Professor of Engineering Practice & William E. Dark ’54 Faculty Fellow, will
be holding office hours to offer career counseling and mentoring concerning careers in the energy sector
with a specific focus on entrepreneurial opportunities. He is located in MEOB 409 and is available
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM or by appointment. Mr. Donnell has worked for over
thirty years in the energy field and is currently the executive chairman of an energy services firm in
Houston, sits on a number of boards, and is involved in a new MEEN 489/689 course to be offered in the
fall, Entrepreneurship for Nanomaterials Related to Energy Applications.
2015 AEE Scholarship
I am helping assist the scholarship chairman for the Lone Star Chapter (local Houston chapter) of the
Association of Energy Engineers. AEE has scholarships available every year for engineering students
whose field of interest is energy related. We are actively seeking scholarship candidates from local
universities, and Texas A&M is eligible. Our goal is to get the applications into the hands of interested
student as soon as possible so that they can submit their applications timely. The scholarship procedures
and a student application are attached.
We must submit applications to the national AEE Scholarship Committee by May 1ST.

Harvard 2+2 Program
The 2+2 program is for graduating seniors; it is an admissions deferral program. College seniors apply to
Harvard Business School as part of the 2+2 Program, and if they are accepted they work full-time for 2-4
years before enrolling at HBS to complete their MBA. The program focuses on, but is not limited to, those
with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) backgrounds.

ELIGIBILITY
The following eligibility requirements shall be met by applicants for the SUT Houston Undergraduate
Scholarship Award.
1. Applicant must be at least a rising sophomore (someone completing the first half of their
sophomore academic year of full-time college work), and must continue as a full-time student
while receiving this scholarship. Note, you must be enrolled in to be eligible for the scholarship. If a
student graduates and is not enrolled in the Spring semester, they will not be eligible to receive the
second disbursement.
2. Applicant shall be enrolled in an accredited college or university.
3. Applicant does not have to be an SUT student member in good standing to apply, BUT must become
one before receiving a scholarship.
4. Applicant’s scholarship plan shall be such as to provide entry into some field of science or
engineering encompassed by the technical activities of the SUT.
5. Sophomores and juniors who receive an SUT scholarship award are eligible for yearly continuation
of the awards (until completion of their senior year) provided they maintain at least the equivalent of a
3.3 on a 4.0 scale, have excellent references, and submit well designed career goals in line with objectives
stated above. It should be stressed that regardless of GPA, renewal is not automatic. To apply for
renewal, an individual must submit a completed application, career essay, official transcript and three (3)
letters of recommendation. At least one of these letters must be from a professor from the student’s
university or college.
6. Applicants may be students of any nationality, unrestricted by the US State Department, and in fulltime study at any accredited college or university within the United States.
Charles Lake Scholarship
Rain for Rent is pleased to announce its 2015 Charles P. Lake/Rain for Rent Scholarship Program. A
brochure with more information is attached. We are pleased you will be participating with us in selecting
students from your university for this scholarship. The 2014 Program awarded over $50,000 to 35
students through 25 different universities and organizations (2014 Newsletter attached).

Engineering Scholarship 2015-2016
The Greater Houston Community Foundation is excited to announce the Roger and Barbara Powell
scholarship, which makes scholarships for engineering/computer science students. This is the first year
for awards. However, this is an endowed scholarship, so awards will be made annually indefinitely. It’s a
great new scholarship program!
Attached is a flyer for those who are interested in applying or sharing with others. The application
deadline is March 30, 2015. Only online applications will be accepted. Below is the link to the online

NASA Johnson Space Center Internships
We have several summer openings in Houston, Texas at the Johnson Space Center for students studying
Mechanical Engineering; students having a minor in Mathematics and/or Physics is a plus. The selected
interns will be working with SGT, Inc. and Lockheed Martin on the Integrated Mission Operations (IMOC
II) Contract.
The major components of the IMOC Contact are: "Plan, Train and Fly." The overall project includes
providing support and products for spaceflight operations capability development and execution for the
Johnson Space Center Flight Operations Directorate. This project includes providing support to mission
preparation (Plan); crew, flight controller, instructor, and analyst training (Train); and real-time mission
execution (Fly) activities related to the International Space Station operations and Exploration
operations.
Pay rate: $ 20/hour
Dates: mid-May through early-August 2015, 40 hours per week

Marketing for AT&T Intern Opportunity
AT&T has more internships for this upcoming summer in Dallas. They are open to all BS and MS level
students of any major.
Internship Description: This candidate will be involved in the designing of training content as used in
eLearning, leader-led and virtual/distance learning solutions. This candidate will be involved in

REU for Automotive and Energy Research
The department of Mechanical Engineering at Oakland University (OU) will once again be hosting a
National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site, “AERIM:Automotive
and Energy Research and Industrial Mentorship Program at Oakland University.” The focus will be
automotive and energy-related research topics in mechanical engineering with a special emphasis on
technologies that aim to improve efficiencies of internal combustion engines, automotive manufacturing
processes, automotive materials, alternative propulsion systems and lubrication and wear. We are
seeking to recruit ten talented and motivated undergraduate students from across the United States to
spend 10 weeks in the summer working on a research project at OU and are especially interested in
providing opportunities for women and underrepresented minority students. Students will be
provided with a $5,000 stipend, on-campus housing, meal allowance and travel funding. No prior
automotive or research experience is required.
The program will run this summer from May 18 to July 24, 2015. Application review will begin on March

To be competitive for these awards, the student should have a solid GPA (3.7 or higher for all but the
Fulbright; 3.0 and higher for Fulbright) and be significantly involved in research, community service,
internships, and/or other activities. Students who want to apply for the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, or
Churchill awards must fill out a campus application and be selected for official University nomination.
The deadline is April 3, 2015 at Noon. Although a campus nomination is not required, if a student would
like guidance or assistance in their Fulbright or Gates Cambridge application, the application materials
must be submitted by July 17, 2015 at 5pm. If you know of any students who graduate before August
2016 and would be good candidates for these scholarships, I ask that you send me their names and
contact information. Additionally, if you need or would like more information about the awards, please

**NOTE: The Rhodes Trust AND the Mitchell Foundation has instituted a new policy. Each student must
write the following statement after completing their application:
“I attest that this essay is my own work and is wholly truthful. Neither it nor any earlier draft has been
edited by anyone other than me, nor has anyone else reviewed it to provide me with suggestions to
improve it. I understand that any such editing or review would disqualify my application.”
As such, no member of the university may assist with the creation or revision of a Rhodes or Mitchell
