The MA+ Guide

The
MA+
Guide
A guide to More Accessible
sexuality-related assistive technology
Narelle Higson

A word from the author:
This guide is not a collection of facts; it is a collection of ideas.
Ideas about pleasure, having fun, being playful, trying something different,
finding new ways of doing things, thinking outside the square. Ideas about
different ways to achieve and enrich sexual pleasure, on your own or with a
partner.
You may not particularly like these ideas…or prefer your own. That is absolutely
ok. (I would love to hear your ideas if you are willing to share  )
This guide merely tries to be a conversation starter…a thought prompter.
The MA+ Guide does not seek to educate about sexuality or the potential impact
of MS on sexual function – there are already many wonderful resources available
on that topic (please see the resource section at the end for details of these).
This guide is in no way intended to be prescriptive, it simply seeks to identify
sexuality and positioning products which:
 May be easy to use
 May be easy to adapt
 Have useful features
 Are readily available in Australia (unless otherwise noted)
This guide does not intend to be prescriptive in any way and does not replace the
advice of your healthcare practitioner.
Although up to date at the time of writing (2012), the products listed are just a
small sample chosen from local or online suppliers. Please feel welcome to
contact the MSWA Sexuality Service (or your local MS Society) for further
information on current pricing and availability or alternative products which may
be of use for you.
A word for Health Professionals: This guide can be printed in full as a
general resource. Alternatively, its design enables relevant sections to be printed
individually to meet specific needs.
I wish to acknowledge the generosity of the MSWA in supporting the
creation of this resource – and hope you find it helpful 

Holding on
Is it ever challenging to get and keep a good grip on a toy? (…or do
you imagine it could be?)
Whether you choose to wear it, stick it or prop it...there are many ways to use
toys that don’t involve holding them...
Wear it
Why? Wearing a toy on your body means that you don’t have to hold on to it.
Some toys are designed to be worn; others are shaped in such a way that they
can be tucked into clothing. Using a toy with a remote control enables you to be
in control even if the toy is out of reach.
Wear it: On your hand
Why? Anywhere your hand can reach you can experience a different
sensation, without the need to hold on. Can be used on self or partner, wherever
it may feel pleasurable or as part of a massage. Glove style massagers are
generally very quiet as the vibrating units are very small. As with all gloves, they
may be tricky to put on, however they will usually stay in place once put on
correctly.
Name: Fukuoko 5 Finger Massage Glove (Fukouko)
Approx. cost: $80
What is it?
Waterproof stretch fabric glove, with small
vibrating units at the tip of each finger. Powered by 3 AAA
batteries housed in pouch at base of glove. Small sliding
on/off switch on battery compartment also selects hi/lo
speeds. It is available in left or right hand and can be used
in the bath or shower.
http://www.fukuokuglove.com
Other ideas: For a cheaper alternative to a glove, consider putting a small
bullet vibrator in the finger of a loose latex or leather glove (e.g. golf glove).

This resource is intended as a guide only and should not be seen as the MS Society’s
specific recommendation or endorsement of any product/company.
Wear it: On your finger
Why? As with the glove massagers, finger vibes allow you to turn your fingers
(or toes…or anything else they may fit onto) into a vibrator, without the need to
continually hold onto it. Finger vibes are very quiet and are often waterproof for
use in the shower or bath (where they can also be cleaned). Depending on the
model, these small vibrators use batteries ranging from small watch cell type to
larger AAA size, which may be easier to replace.

Wear it: On your tongue
Why? Tongue vibrators require little hand function for use, although
positioning on the tongue may require assistance. They are designed to add a
tickling, buzzing sensation in any area that can be kissed in partner play. Tongue

over non-vibrating toys to turn them into buzzing ones. They are lightweight,
waterproof and quiet. Tongue vibrators are available in cheaper disposable or
more expensive reusable models.

Prop it
Why? Propping a vibrator in a purpose designed or custom made cushion
(cushions of the lounge?) may enable you to find a comfortable position without
needing to hold the toy.
If the toy offers particularly strong vibration, it may be less important to position
yourself precisely as the vibration of the massager may be transmitted through
the cushion (near enough may be good enough).

Taking control
Are you ever bothered by small, fiddly or difficult to see controls?
Go simpler
Why? Depending on what you would like your toy to do, buying one with
larger or simple controls may mean that you don’t need to modify or adapt the

Go smarter

Go switch
Why? Switch adapting a toy may open a whole world of possibilities for you
(and your partner!) Some toys are easier to adapt than others, so if you are
interested in getting something adapted, it may be worth seeking advice from
your friendly Occupational Therapist. Sometimes the toys themselves can be
adapted, or adaptations can be made to remote controls to enable them to be
accessed easier. Powered toys can be switched too, through the use of a switch
adapted remotely controlled powerboard. Almost anything is possible...if in
doubt, ask 

A switch adapted remote control powerboard
for use with mains
powered items: simply plug the toy into the
powerboard, and a switch
into the adapted control box to enable the
switch to turn the item on and off.

Extending your reach
Is it ever tricky to reach where you would like (on yourself or your
partner)?
Extra length
Why? Consider buying a toy that offers you extra length. Even if you don’t
need the toy to be as long as it is, it may mean that you will have room to hold
onto it and still reach where you would like.
Name: Body Wand Original Massager (Body Wand)
Approx. price: $100

length. Vibration intensity is controlled by a dial in the middle of the

Extra thought (adapted)
Why? Any of the handy methods you already use to access difficult to reach
places may be useful. Could a toy be attached to a long handled reacher? ...a
bendable long handled bath sponge? Could that feather be attached to a long
handled shoe horn? The possibilities are only limited by your imagination!
Your Occupational Therapist may be able to assist you in adapting your
favourite toy to make it easier to use, or point you in the direction of services
that may be able to assist.

Does tiredness, pain or spasm ever stop you moving (or not moving)
your body as you would like?

Do you find changing batteries difficult?
Small, fiddly batteries and difficult to access battery compartments are
commonplace in smaller toys. There are, however, toys that use electricity,
larger batteries or alternatives to batteries that may solve the problem.
Full power
Why? Using an electrical item means there are no batteries at all, ever!

water...)

Why? Rechargeable toys are generally more expensive to purchase, however
there are no ongoing battery costs. If you are looking at a rechargeable toy, it is
worth checking where the recharging socket is. Some toys require a small
silicone flap to be lifted before inserting a micro-jack. Other options have
magnetic attachments, which do not require as much manipulation to attach.

Battery pack
Why? Some toys (for example the Tongue Joy (p ) have an optional power
pack. Not only does this mean that the toy will last longer before replacing
batteries, it also means that the batteries used will be larger and potentially
easier to replace. Note: having separate batteries also means that the toy itself
will be lighter.
Eco-alternatives
Why? Yes – you can have your sex toy and care about the environment at the
same time  For those times when you may be travelling...or just because you
feel like it, here are some greener options.

Altered sensation
Is genital numbness, hypersensitivity or heat tolerance an issue for
you?
Some ideas: Genital numbness is a common experience for people living with
MS. For some, adding a little extra stimulation from a vibrating sex toy can assist
in increasing pleasure in sexual activities. For others, any touch at all can feel
uncomfortable. If this is the case for you, smooth, cooling toys may assist in
reducing unpleasant sensations.
Decreased sensation: Strong Vibration
Why? If reduced sensation or numbness is an issue for you, you may find it
helpful to increase the level of stimulation during sexual activity. When
considering the strength of different toys, as a general rule toys powered by
mains power offer the strongest vibration. Rechargeable toys also offer strong
vibration, with toys powered by the largest size of batteries usually next in
vibration strength. Store owners are usually happy for you to test a toy – the tip
of your nose is a good testing place 
NOTE: if decreased sensation is an issue for you, be wary of using strong
vibration or other extra strength stimulation in areas that you are not able to
monitor for potential tissue damage.

Increased sensation
Do altered sensations ever make intimate activities uncomfortable?
Some ideas: Think about the surface of your toy: choosing toys that are smooth
(eg glass or metal) may feel more comfortable. Choosing a vibratior that offers a
variable range of control, rather than on/off enables you to choose a level that
suits you best.
Cool it
Why? Ice packs or toys that can be cooled may feel soothing prior to or after
sexual activity. A wet sponge put in a zip-lock bag and placed in the freezer does
not cause wetness when used as an ice pack. Avoid placing ice directly on the
genital area for extended periods to avoid delicate tissue damage.
Name: Foreplay Ice Frost Vibrating Ice Massager (California
Exotics)
Approx. price: $36
Features: A waterproof silicone vibrator which is filled with

For when you’re tired (but not that
tired…)
Some ideas: make use of positioning pillows or supportive furniture which may
allow you to rest your body during activity. If possible, plan to have any items
you may find useful during solo or partner play within easy reach (hanging from
the bedhead?).
Choosing toys that are lighter, do not need to be held, or those made of
unbreakable material so they are unlikely to be damaged if dropped may also be
worth considering.
Placing a condom or toy cover over your toy may make clean-up easier.

Private time
Would you like to keep your activities private?
Some ideas
 Quiet please
o Powered sex toys vary considerably in their noise level. As a
general rule, vibrators powered by electricity are the noisiest
and battery operated vibrators tend to be quieter. Many store
websites give an indication of the noise level of the product. If
shopping in person and sound level is an issue, ask to hear the
item turned on.
 Discreet
o Many sex toys are clearly designed for intimate play and are
created to resemble various body parts. Depending on your
personal taste and living situation, you may prefer a toy that is
less obvious in design. Consider obtaining a multipurpose device,
such as a “body massager” which are readily obtained from
electrical or department stores.
 Easy clean
o Some toys are designed for easy cleaning, which may reduce the
need to ask someone to help you. Waterproof toys may be taken
in the shower or bath. Placing a condom over a toy designed for
insertion can reduce the need for cleaning.
 Storage solutions
o Purpose made zippered purchased or homemade cushions can
make storage of your collection less obvious (and more
accessible).
 Battery alternatives
o If you need to seek assistance to change batteries, you may wish
to consider some of the alternatives mentioned previously (See:
Batteries – not included ).

A word about lubrication
Using too much is never enough when it comes to lubrication. Personal
lubricants make parts fit together more easily and more comfortably. Keep
water-based lubricant on hand and apply liberally. It can be refreshed by adding
water or saliva (there’s no need to add more if you were generous with its
application).
NOTE: If using silicone toys, water-based lubricant must be used, as silicone
based lubricant will interact with the toy and cause it to deteriorate. Condoms
must only be used with water based lubricant, as silicone lubricant will cause the
condom to deteriorate.

Penis rings
Why? The purpose of a penis ring (or cock ring / erection ring) is to trap blood
inside the penis in order to maintain an erection, or encourage a stronger
erection. In order to do this it must be placed at the base of the penis. Some
rings are designed to be worn around the penis and testicles.

if coldness/numbness is detected)

Penis vacuum pumps
Why? Penis pumps can be used to temporarily overcome symptoms of erectile
dysfunction. Penis pumps are cylinders that are fitted over the penis and have a
manual or motorised pump to create suction. As the partial vacuum is created
around the penis, blood is drawn in creating an erection. A penis ring is pushed
by hand onto the base of the erect penis before releasing the vacuum, which
restricts blood flow out of the penis and maintains the erection. Penis rings must
be removed after no more than 30 mins.
Name: Automatic Precision Penis Pump (California Exotics)
Approx. price: $70
Features: A battery powered vacuum pump activated by a
single button on the pistol shaped grip. The vacuum is

Prostate stimulators
Why? Many men find stimulation of the perineum, area around the anus
and/or prostate highly pleasurable, even in the face of reduced sensation in
other genital areas. As with all toys it is important to use plenty of good quality
long lasting lubrication, particularly if using toys for insertion. Prostate
stimulators may be used in solo or partnered play.
NOTE: when considering toys for anal insertion, choose only smooth toys with a
wide/ flared/ large base to avoid the toy being sucked up into the rectum (and
avoid a visit to the emergency department to have it removed…).

Cleaning and safety tips
The best way to clean a sex toy depends on:
 what the sex toy is made of
 if the sex toy uses batteries and/or has parts that cannot be washed
Sex toys should come with advice about how to clean and store them. Follow the
manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
Most toys can be cleaned with soap and hot water or with a special sex toy
cleaner. It is important to keep water away from any vibrating motors and/or
battery compartments.
It is important to wash toys between use:
 on different parts of the body, such as the mouth, vagina and anus
 by one person and another
Toys designed for insertion (e.g. dildos) can be used with a condom, which can
then be discarded and the toy cleaned in the usual fashion.
It is also important to check sex toys regularly for any scratches or breaks in the
surface material where germs could be present and spread, increasing the risk of
infection.
Name: Toy Covers (California Exotics)
Approx. price: $5
Features: Sanitary sleeves with a non-reservoir tip made of

A brief word about anatomy
Why? In order to use adult toys in a safe and pleasurable manner, it is helpful
to have a basic understanding about how bodies work and “which bits are
where”. Some toys are designed for internal use, whilst others are only safe to be
used externally. If you haven’t yet become acquainted with all parts of your
body, a propped mirror can be a handy thing!
