Northern Finland Ore Potential Project 2011-2015 J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 1 Where are we and What do we do ? GTK Geoscience Exploration Discovery Development Production Mining Companies Universities J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 Juniors 2 Project History • • Project roots are in 2011, when GTK launched two year Northern Finland Mineral Potential Evaluation Project (2011-2012) That was reconnaissance scale stage: Where are ”new” mineral potential areas ? Why area might have mineral potential ? How will we study mineral potential ? ”Rules” For Area Selection • No areal competition with exploration and mining companies ! • Focus in ”new” and ”unexplored” areas ! J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 3 Exploration and research level based on drillings Drillholes from GTK database Saamian homeland and special reindeer herding area Special reindeer herding area Reindeer herding area J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 4 Selected Area (1) 1. Enontekiö, Käsivarsi: Large unexplored greenstone areas between Sweden and Norway Several unexplored mafic-ultramafic bodies and possibilities to find new ones Major deformation zones cut study area Historical exploration (e.g., drilling) were mainly focused to Ruossakero and Sarvisoaivi Ni deposits J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 5 Selected Area (2) Drillhole from GTK database Project area 2. Central Lapland Granitoid Complex and surrounding schist belts: Poorly explored ~ ”Big Unknown” Not only poor granitoids (e.g., aeromagnetic map is not monotonous) Surrounding schist belts highly procpective (e.g., Rompas area) Several mafic intrusives were located by GTK (e.g., Appinites) Limited exploration drilling were carried out Aeromagnetic basemap J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 6 General Results of Mineral Potential Evaluation project Old available data (reports, geochemistry, drillholes, geophysics and boulder) checked and re-analyzed from selected areas Some targets were tested by drilling in both selected areas and ground geophysics surveys were carried out in several areas TEM flights were carried out in Enontekiö and Savukoski areas during Green Mining Project Based on the evaluation project a new three year project was established: Northern Finland Mineral Potential Project (2013-2014) and Since 2015 Northern Finland Ore Potential Project J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 7 Geological results of Mineral Potential Evaluation project 1. Enontekiö, Käsivarsi: • Large scale alteration in Paleoproterozoic greenstones (e.g., scapolite, albite, carbonate) • Geological similarities with Cu-Au-Fe deposits in Sweden and Norway • New prospective mafic-ultramafic bodies and extensions of known bodies • Lots of interesting geophysical anomalies Käsivarsi 14 m 0.1 Co %, 0.3 % Cu, 0.2 % Ni , 13 % S Lätäseno 5 m 1.9 % Cu 2. Central Lapland Granitoid Complex and surrounding schist belts: • Granitoid Complex is not monotonous (see geophysical maps) • Fairly horizontally positioned granitoids cover other rocks • Several areas host interesting Au anomalies in till • Surrounding schist belts unexplored with modern methods and include lot of indications: Ore boulders (Cu-W-Au-Mo) Alteration (skarns and antophyllite-cordierite-biotite rocks) Mafic-ultramafic bodies J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 8 NEW PGE-REEF MINERALIZATION OF THE SOTKAVAARA PYROXENITE INTRUSION, ROVANIEMI, NORTHERN FINLAND Published: Törmänen, T., Konnunaho, J., Karinen., Lehtonen., M., Huovinen, I. 2014. New PRE-REEF Mineralization Of The Sotkavaara Pyroxenite Intrusion, Rovaniemi, Northern Finland. 12th International Platinum Symposium 11-14 August 2014 Yekaterinburg, Russia., P. 212-214 J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 9 Reports of Mineral Potential Evaluation project J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 10 Northern Finland Mineral Potential Project (2013-2014) and Since 2015 Northern Finland Ore Potential Project • As mentioned earlier GTK started a new project in 2013 • Project focuses in two areas based on results and recommendations of previous project Enontekiö, Käsivarsi J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 Rovaniemi, Kuluskaira 11 Enontekiö, Käsivarsi No permissions for geological research as drilling J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 12 …So we have focused on updating the digital geological map of the area J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 13 Rovaniemi, Kuluskaira Key points: • About 60 x 20 km weakly explored area • Poorly understood geology • Only light exploration has been done (drilling, geochemical sampling and geophysics) • Favourable geology (e.g., strongly altered greenstones and mafic intrusions) • Ore indications as W-Cu-Mo-Au boulders • Easy access from Rovaniemi Project task: • Compilation of historical Geo-data • Start to collect new Geo-data: Geochemical till sampling Ground geophysical and aerogeophysical measurements are needed (e.g., TEM) Drilling (e.g., target testing and profile drillings) Report results and data J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 14 J.Konnunaho/6.5.2015 15 Summary • GTK’s Ore Potential Projects produce new Geo-data from unexplored areas for companies and GTK’s other projects use (e.g., modelling projects) • This is project’s last year and future plans are still open • There are several large sized areas for Grassroot to Greenfield exploration in Käsivarsi area, as well as in Central-Lapland granitoid Complex area and surrounding schist belts (e.g., Kuluskaira). These areas are promising for Ni-Cu-Co-PGE, IOCG, Cu-W-Mo and Cu-Au deposits for example. • In most of the areas drilling, geochemistry and modern geophysical surveys are recommended, because base mapping have already been done by GTK, Rautaruukki and Outokumpu Oy • Biggest challenges are permits, especially in the Enontekiö area.
