STUDYING
The National University of Science and
Technology “MISIS” is one of the leading

CAMPUS PLAN
If you look at your schedule, you’ll see that all lecture rooms are
referred to with letters and numbers. Here is the explanation:
Letter = Building
Numbers = floor number plus the room number
E.g.: А-410 – А-building, 4th floor, room № 410.

double-page spread at the end of the handbook.

STUDIES
In MISIS, just as in most Russian universities, the following
system of marks is used:
- "perfect" (mark "5");
- "good" (mark "4");
- "satisfactory" (mark "3");
- "unsatisfactory" (mark "2");
- "pass the test" or "fail the test".
Marks of "5", "4", "3" and "pass the test” are considered to be
passing marks.
The academic year is divided into two semesters:
- Autumn semester (September 1 – January 25);
- Spring semester (February 9 – June 30)
At the end of each semester (in January and in June) students take
their final exams in every subject they studied according to the
curriculum.
Vacation:
- Winter vacation – after winter exams (Jan 26 – Feb 9)
- Summer vacation – after summer exams (July 1 – August 31)

You can access the Electronic Catalog from any computer
connected to the Internet by going to lib.misis.ru. To receive access, just
enter your library card number, and your name in Russian as a
password.
Besides the Electronic Catalog, you have access to over 3000
electronic books and textbooks published at the University.
From the University Electronic Reading Room there is access
to other electronic resources: the electronic catalogs of the largest
Russian libraries and the libraries of other countries, the database
of full-text scientific articles ELIBRARY, the system of
thermodynamic data TERMOCALC, etc.
Additionally, the scientific-technical library of MISIS offers
the option «books on demand» – publishing books and manuals on
request of students, postgraduates and lecturers for them to create
their own professional and personal home libraries. To have a
book published, one needs to:
1 – Find the book in the electronic catalog
2 – Fill in the form
3 – Pay for the service
4 – Pick up the publication in a couple of hours
!!! If you do not need the whole book, you can ask to have
printed selected chapters, sections, etc.!!!

A sound mind in a sound body. To keep yourself fit, you do not
just need to be nourished regularly, but also to exercise. What
kind of exercise depends on you. In our sports complex you can

INTERNET
In today’s world living without the Internet means
that you are always behind the times. So, just like any
other person, you cannot imagine your life without the
Internet. Let us tell you how to get quick access to the Internet in
our University.
ON THE ACADEMIC CAMPUS:
Method 1 - Wi-Fi. All you need is a laptop
(or a smart phone, or a tablet) and Wi-Fi, which
is available nearly everywhere throughout the
University. The best signal however is in the
Library (1st floor, building Б). To get to the Internet you need the
following info:

If the password is changed, the information will appear on the
board near the office of the Student Union Committee (room Б407), or on the board of the Mining Institute: room Б-513 (new
building).
Method 2 – Use the University computers in computer classes
(main building Б, 8th floor) or computers located in nearly every University department.
To get permission for using the department
computers, make arrangements with the professor in advance.

IN THE DORMITORY:
To access the Internet in the dormitory, follow the instructions
below:
1) write a request: you can do it in Building 1, 1st floor, or in
the building "Gornyak-2", 1st floor
2) wait for cable to be laid: you’ll have to wait for the
electrician to come and lay the cable (it may take up to 2 weeks)
3) fill out an Agreement: once the cable is laid, you'll need to
fill out the Agreement (for the place to do it, see item 1 above) and
within 24 hours you'll get the Internet connection.
4) pay for the Internet: the PRICE depends on its speed: 15 or
22 rubles per day (both - UNLIMITED), but as students say, speed
doesn't differ much... So, it is up to you which option to request!
You can pay for the Internet at the payment terminal, which is
on the first floor of Building 1. It takes 100, 500, or 1000-ruble
notes at a time and issues receipts with PIN codes for the
connection.

MIGRATION CARD REGISTRATION
No matter how you’ve come to Moscow (by train, plane, bus,
bicycle, or with any other means of transportation), do not be in a
hurry … Look around… do you like it?... WELCOME TO
MOSCOW!!! And let’s get acquainted!
If immediately after crossing the border you want to become
a lawbreaker, then keep standing and looking around as much as
you like…
If not, then move into your dormitory and come to the Office of
International Affairs (OIA) at MISIS as soon as you can. There
are two offices of OIA at the University:
- Leninsky Avenue, 2-2а, 4th floor, room 416
(metro station Oktyabrskaya (Circle line),
and
- Leninsky Avenue, 6, 3rd floor room 363 (Mining Institute)
Be sure to bring all needed papers with you:
- passport and Migration Card stamped by the border control
- notarized translation of your passport, if your international
passport is not already in Russian
- single entry visa – for students who require a visa to study in the
Russian Federation (including Turkmenistan, Georgia) and
stateless persons
- 1 photo 3х4 cm (6 photos for citizens with visas)
- photocopy of the Contract with the University for those having
study-for-fee form of education (in case of “contract enrollment”)
- copy of the Enrollment Order to the University (signed by the
Director of the Institute and having a round stamp "Student HR")
(for our English-language students, we will likely have this for
you already, so don’t worry if you don’t have this)

- photocopy of the biographical page of the national passport,
migration card, and visa (for those who need a visa to study in the
Russian Federation and stateless persons)
- medical certificate (including the result of the HIV test), proving
the absence of leprosy, tuberculosis, venereal diseases, malaria,
and HIV and indicates that you are sufficiently healthy to study in
Russia
These documents are required to be submitted to OIA
within 7 days after the date of your arrival in Moscow.
If for any reason you are not able to do this, you will be
fined for the violation of administrative and legal norms of the
Russian Federation (a penalty can be from 5,000 to 400,000
rubles). So, if you are not a millionaire, do not take a risk! Be
quick: come to OIA and have your migration registration taken
care of asap.
Once you have mastered this FIRST STEP, take a breath and
lie back – now you are legally in Moscow!

LIVING IN MOSCOW
This section is devoted to living in an unfamiliar environment,
far away from home.
Russians differ from people of other nationalities. At first
sight, they may look gloomy, sad, or angry, but when getting closer to them, one may discover he was mistaken.
Moscow is a big city with millions of inhabitants; it has many
traditions and customs. Moscow is a city of:
- 12 districts
- 125 regions
- about 132 parks
- more than 500 museums
- more than 50 stadiums
- about 17 million inhabitants
Unlike many cities of Europe, Moscow is a «round-the-clock
city». Shops do not close at 18.00, they are open 7 days a week
(even on the weekends!); many of them work round the clock.

Sad comparison, but unlike many other cities, Moscow is a
place where the main person in the street is not a pedestrian, but a
driver. (The saying goes that a Russian driver’s hand is closer to
the horn than his foot is to the break!) Therefore, when crossing

watch your step and BE VERY CAREFUL!!!

Unfortunately for you, most of the websites are presented in

You know already how to connect the Internet at the
University or in the Dormitory (see pages 22-23, section
Internet).
Besides, there are many cafés in Moscow where you can find
free Wi-Fi: McDonalds, Shokoladnitsa, Starbucks, and many,
many more. They are all marked with a sign «Wi-Fi ZONE» or
«FREE Wi-Fi».
Since 2013 you can access Internet even on some lines of the
Metro (circle line and others).
And, of course, you can always get the Internet via a Mobile
Internet option (2G, 3G, 3.5G, 4G, LTE, etc.)

RUSSIAN STATE HOLYDAYS
NEW YEAR
31st of December – 1st of January
New Year’s Celebration. Traditionally Ded
Moroz (an analogue of Santa Claus) with his
granddaughter Snegurochka comes and
brings presents to children who behaved
well during the year. Also Russians often
decorate a holiday (“Christmas”) tree.
CHRISTMAS
The 7th of January
One of the major Christian holidays to
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The
Russian Orthodox religion still follows the
Julian calendar, which is about 12 days
behind the Gregorian calendar that is used in
most countries around the globe, including
Russia.
DAY of the DEFENDER of the MOTHERLAND
The 23rd of February
Most Russians tend to celebrate the holiday as a
“Real Man’s” Day, rather than a Russian Army
Day. That’s why all women congratulate all men
(their defenders) on this day!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
The 8th of March
The name of the holiday speaks for itself:
International Women's Day is the holiday of
spring and love. On this day, all the men
congratulate their wives, sisters, daughters,
mothers, aunts, grandmothers, girlfriends, and
female colleagues with warm words and
handing them the traditional flowers for this
day - tulips and mimosas.
LABOR DAY
The 1st of May
This holiday brings a joyful spring
mood and a hope for summer to
arrive very soon. On this day families
go to their dachas (traditional
Russian country homes), for picnics,
or spend time outdoors, enjoying
nature, fresh air and the warmth of
spring.
VICTORY DAY
The 9th of May
One of the main Russian holidays, it is
dedicated to the great victory over Nazi
Germany. Traditionally, a grand military
parade is held. Veterans put on their military
uniforms, and many people in the streets
thank them for the victory and give them

flowers. People also go to the Eternal Flame. The Day ends with
great fireworks display.
DAY OF RUSSIA
The 12th of June
One of the newest Russian state
holidays. It was established to
commemorate the signing of the
Declaration of Independence of the
Russian Federation. People have not
yet fully appreciated the value of
the holiday, but gradually they take
it for a holiday of freedom, justice, harmony, and peace.
DAY OF NATIONAL UNITY
The 4th of November
On this day people celebrate Russian
unity. In 1612 citizens-in-arms freed
Moscow from Polish invaders.
It was one of the most important
turning points in Russian history. It
demonstrated the unity and solidarity
of all Russian people.
