delivery of orders to farms. The marketing team is backed by the expert
knowledge and experience of the agricultural management department which
advises and assists farmers with regard to crop management, animal health and
the best production practices.

Managerial Learnership - 2016
The aim of this program is to identify potential future managers of Obaro.
The suitable candidate will sign a year contract with Obaro, that may lead to a possible permanent
position. Internal training will be offered in Obaro stores, as well as formal academic modules in a
classroom environment. A qualification (NQF 5) in General Management will be awarded to the
candidate after the successful completion of his/her learnership .
General Requirements:
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills;
Proficient in MS Office;
Own transport and cellular phone; and
Must be relocatable.
Requirements for Graduates:
Experience in agriculture/marketing will be advantageous; and
A Tertiary qualification in any one of the following fields: Bcom, Marketing, Agriculture or General
Management, is preferred.

I had heard about the Managerial Learnership at MGK through a friend. I have
finished my studies at NWU Pukke and was in my final year at Business School. I,
like so many people, did not know where to start my career. Long before I had heard
about the opportunity at MGK, I had made up my mind to pursue a career in
business, to work myself up through a company and learn all the various facets by
which a company functions. Most of all I wanted to do this in a company that was
retail driven. The opportunity at MGK had fit in perfectly with the plans for my future.
After I had heard of the opportunity, I grabbed hold with both hands. Both of my
interviews had been at MGK Head Office, after which I was given the chance to
complete my learnership at Obaro Brits. I learned from the various retail divisions of
Obaro and was even given the opportunity to complete an external qualification
(NQF 5).
Obaro, as well as MGK, has a very unique culture and work environment which had
made it easy to fit in and express myself as individual. There aren’t many company
who can boast with such a culture. Obaro takes just as much care of its employees
as it does its clients which is quick and easy inspiration for the day’s challenges.
The Managerial Learnership meant a lot to me. I had not only grown personally, but
also as an exceptional manager. The knowledge I accumulated from the various
aspects of the company is priceless.
What the year meant to me is difficult to explain in words. What I can say with
confidence is that I shall never regret it. The Managerial Learnership is an ideal
opportunity for anyone who is interested in the business world.

The Managerial Learnership at MGK was the key to my career’s development.
I went to North West University where I studied Bcom Business Management, after
which I completed a postgraduate diploma in General Management at
Potchefstroom Business School. I applied for the Managerial Learnership through
the career centre.
Obaro and MGK, with this learnership, offered me the perfect opportunity to enter
the labour force without any experience. I was also given the advantage of to study
further and acquire an NQF 5 qualification and at the same time gain valuable work
experience. I feel that the integration of theory and practice fills the void that a
university student experiences after completing his studies. It was of great value to
have been given the opportunity to take that first step in such an encouraging
environment, and to be given the chance to reach my potential.
Continuous interaction with senior management within the company gave me the
necessary exposure, through which I could identify my preferences, as well as my
strengths and weaknesses and how to work on the later.
After the completion of my learnership at Obaro, I was given the chance to move
away from MGK’s retail division to move to the financing division. I have been a
finance marketer in the Groblersdal area for more than a year now and I still enjoy
every moment of working with farmers in the field.

As a final year student at PUK, I was grateful for the advertisements we received from the

I grew up on a farm and thus I already knew Obaro as the company which my father had
been relying on for many years for the farm’s everyday needs. Little did I know, though,

I completed a degree in Economics and Risk Management, after which I also completed
an honors in Economics. Economics has been a great love of mine since school and I

The learnership mainly focussed on management. We learned how to discover our unique
management style and how to implement and develop it. The learnership was an
outstanding learning process, where I learned not only more about myself as a person, but
also how to develop my management skills. What makes this learnership perfect for
anyone, is the fact that one moment you’re learning about management and the next you
can implement what you have learned into the working environment.
The learnership touches on much more than just management, though. You learn how to
identify risks in a business and how to adapt to a diverse working environment.

suited for anyone who is interested in starting a worthwhile career.
I was fortunate to be accepted into the learnership, after completing a BCom and BCom
Honors degree at NWU and also the Project Management course at the Potchefstroom
Business School. During the learnership I had the opportunity to complete a Financial
Management degree at UNISA.
Other than the personal growth and learning so much about myself as a person, I gained a
lot of experience in all the different aspects of a business. I was also given the training,
exposure, valuable interactions with clients and other stakeholders and practical
experience. It is because of this that I now understand the intricate functioning and
dynamics of an agricultural company, as well as what is expected of me as a manager.
Further advantages the learnership left me with, is product knowledge and client relations
experience. I know now how important clients are to a company like Obaro and now know
how to build and develop relationships with clients. Clients are, after all, the life blood of
any business.
