There are many ways to do things. There’s the
right way, the wrong way and the boss’s way.
Then there is Dale Bordelon of Effie. He does
things the Cajun way.
He’s not a Cajun musician, although he likes
Cajun music. Nor is
he a Cajun raconteur,
but he does tell a good
story.
Bordelon does one
thing
exceedingly
well. He builds gunning duck decoys the
old-fashioned way,
the Cajun way, using
the same tools that
were available to his
ancestors, or as
Bordelon likes to call
them, “the old people.”

when he sets to creating his own version of the classic
gunning decoy

it’s the Cajun way.
“I could probably

day, but if I had to
work on one of
these all day it
would take the fun
out of it,” Bordelon
says. “It’s the
process of doing it.
It’s like hunting.”
Bordelon lives in Avoyelles Parish. Though he
resides in Effie, he was raised in Hessmer. And he
works in Bunkie with his elderly father, John, at

The men farm and buy grain. And in the winter, they go duck hunting.
“I grew up hunting with my daddy at Old
River and all over the place,” Bordelon says. “I
took a liking it—the getting up early, getting
cold—the whole
nine yards. The
boat ride to the
blind is the best
part.”
He duck hunts
every chance he
gets. And he’s a
very good duck
hunter. There’s a
longing
in
Bordelon’s voice when he speaks of past generations of the duck hunters contracted by markets to supply food for town folks. You can
almost hear him thinking, If only I had been
born a hundred years ago.
Bordelon knows ducks—he really knows
ducks. “As a hunter I was always studying
ducks,” he says. “I was just fascinated by
them.”
But his over-eagerness to hunt the wild duck
ultimately left him restless and unfulfilled. He

became bored and disheartened by his behavior after a successful (by most standards) hunt
in which he and his hunting partner downed

“We used to kill ducks on top of ducks,”
Bordelon said on a truck drive to LaSalle

“I remember we
killed 18 or 19
and the next day
we only killed

“I was discouraged with that. I
told my podnuh

this the wrong way.”
Bordelon shakes his head in disbelief and
says the hateful words again. “I got discouraged because we only killed twelve ducks.”
It proved to be an epiphany.
Bordelon took time from his study of ducks
to study himself. Private meditation revealed
his raison d’etre was his love of Avoyelles’
pervasive French culture and a genuine appreciation for the people who came before him.
How did they live? How did they feel? How
did they hunt and provide food for their families?
“How did the old people live?” Bordelon
asks. “They made decoys to sell and hunt with.
There were no store-bought decoys.”
Understanding and fully grasping that the
early settlers of Avoyelles had to live and make
do with what they created well into the 20th
century, Bordelon rekindled his passion for the
outdoors, hunting and everything Cajun by
learning how to build old-fashioned duck
decoys.
His first efforts to fashion a gunning decoy
did not go according to plan. The early homemade decoys looked like ducks and with his
homemade duck callers, they quacked like
ducks, but sadly, and this is crucial, they did
not float like ducks.
That’s when Bordelon began to delve further
into the art of building gunning decoys.
“Nobody taught me,” Bordelon says. “I read
books. I took a carving class at Louisiana
College and learned the basics and it helped me
out a lot. But I got books that showed me how
people in the old days used to do it.”
He even traveled “way down south
Louisiana” to observe master boatbuilder and
artistic duck carver Willie Badeaux of Paradis.
Bordelon pulls an old folding pocket knife
from his pocket. Though the handle is worn
and the blade blackened with age, it’s basically
nondescript. It’s the kind of knife you could
buy at any country store 30 years ago.
“This is what they used,” Bordelon says. His
Cajun accent is so strong it sounds like “Dis is
what dey used.” Bordelon continued his
demonstration. He grabs a cylindrical piece of
ultra-light tupelo wood and begins to shave
slivers from the medium with his ancient knife.
“They didn’t have no stainless steel knives, no
band saws,” Bordelon said. “I like to do it like
they did. To me that’s the sport. Doing it their
way.”
That’s the sport. Those words flowed from
Bordelon’s mouth like a mantra. “I build them
like this because that’s the sport of it,” he
repeats. Self-revelation. Because he could find
the sport in the process he could find new love
for duck hunting.
Bordelon quickly discovered why his early
decoys floated like, well, wounded ducks.
“You take the bell of a tupelo tree or the root
of a cypress tree,” Bordelon says. The bell of
the tupelo is the lower four to five feet of the
tree where the base begins to flare out into the
ground. The shape resembles a bell. “It’s a
cork-like substance—easy to carve and very
buoyant like a cork.” It’s a tidbit of knowledge
Bordelon picked up in conversations with
older duck hunters.
For ballast Bordelon fashioned a metal mold
to shape melted lead into a weighted keel. “The
decoy has to have a keel so when you throw it
out on the water, it floats upright,” he says. “I
fasten the keel with two brass screws—nothing
rusts on the decoy.”
The duck head is actually made from the
harder wood of the tree. Bordelon glues the
head to the body, but the old Cajuns used a
dowel to attach the cranium.
“When I hunted as a young boy with my
daddy we used the old hard plastic Victors,”
Bordelon says. “I remember I was always just
fascinated by ducks. When I made my first
decoys, I put them out with our plastic
decoys.”
He felt a surge of pride for his heritage when
he floated his first decoys.
“I was just fascinated with them because it
was something I made,” Bordelon says. “It’s
just an extra thrill.
“It’s fine to hunt ducks, but when you’re
hunting and you put out your homemade
decoys, it adds to the hunt. It’s unbelievable. It
adds to the sport of it. Then when you paddle
out in your own dugout pirogue and call the
ducks with your own homemade duck call it
adds extras to it. And then I use an old double
barrel or Dad’s old Model 12. It really adds to
the sport.”
Bordelon began carving decoys in 1988 and
now has amassed a flock of two dozen oldfashioned wooden gunning decoys. Bordelon
makes the decoys a little larger than an actual
duck because he believes the aerial view of the
plus-size image is more enticing to a flying formation leader. Bordelon will also let the shape
of the wood dictate the pose of the decoy. If the
cypress root is slightly curved, Bordelon carves
a duck in the act of turning. He also poses his
decoys in other degrees of action. The duck
heads are looking right or left or appear to be
sleeping and relaxed.
“I studied the ducks all day,” Bordelon says.
“When they are flocking there’s always two or
three coming in and landing. They do this
when they’re relaxed. When you see them
swimming out with their heads looking up,
they’re tense. That’s why I make mine with different poses.”
Bordelon adds that most store bought decoys
are set in a single pose with the heads facing
forward.
“It’s my own personal recreation. I enjoy
putting the decoys out in the water and setting
them up,” Bordelon says as tosses his decoys
into a river bend pond near Moncla. “Some
people got people to put their own decoys out
for them. They kill ducks and don’t even pluck
their ducks.” He adjusts his straw baseball cap
and admires the faux ducks floating in the
blackwater pool. A duck blind sits in one corner of the lake. “That’s not fun. I don’t see what
the fun of it is if you’re not getting cold on the
boat ride out to the blind. It’s not worth it.”
There are a lot of ultra-detailed hand-carved
duck decoys available for sale, Bordelon says,
but they are for the art market.
“I’ve seen some beautiful, realistic carved
ducks that sell for $4,000,” he says. “That’s for
rich people to put up on their shelves and
showcases. And a lot of them sell for $400500. I might make one or two for a friend.”
But the real treasure for Bordelon is knowing
he’ll eventually leave his hand-carved gunning
duck decoy collection to his sons, Hunter, 14,
and Coty, 11.
“My decoys are going to have bruises,” he
says. He points to some scratches marring the
surface of a mallard wing. “B-B holes. My little boy accidentally shot this one on a hunt. The
rich people can put up their art decoys in their
showcases. Mine will be for my kids to put on
their shelves.”
And you can’t put a price tag on that.

Right now, if invasive plant
seeds have indeed moved on up
the road, Sanders says the best
thing a landowner can do is kill it
before it grows wherever offroad logging equipment and
other vehicles were present.
“Watch the area for two years.
If something comes up and you
do not recognize it, don’t let it go
to seed.” Sanders advised. “Kill
it. Invasive species have an introductive phase, a lag phase and
the invasive phase.
“If it gets to the invasive phase,
it just takes over everywhere. If
seeds did spread around
Louisiana and elsewhere, it’s in
the introductive phase and easy
to control. Kill it. Nuke it before
it grows.”
Sanders also advised timber
owners to use caution before
allowing vehicles onto virgin real
estate.
“Request loggers wash their
equipment before they come onto
your place,” Sanders said.

boat owners moving their watercraft out of the path of
hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
“The stuff has been in the state since 1998 in three
areas only, Cameron Parish, Toledo Bend and Houma,”
Sanders said. “Following the two storms we now find it
in 15 areas. It’s in all the big lakes of northwestern
Louisiana.
“The wind may have blown it or boat trailers may
have moved it.”
Sanders said signs posted in infested areas asking
boaters to wash off their trailers before leaving the
waterways are just suggestions.
“There’s no way to enforce boat and trailer washing,”

Sanders has made PowerPoint presentations to numerous forestry, military and government groups about the
dangers of invasive plant species.
“Invasive plants crowd out the native species, even in
a natural setting where you might not have commercial
interests,” Sanders said “Eventually the invasive will
crowd out the natives and you’ll have nothing but invasives.
“Invasive plant species will create a monoculture of
undesirable species. If left unchecked it will be the only
plant that’s left.”
So Louisiana with its hot sultry summer nights are not
only good settings for Southern novels. Our topography
is also a rampant breeding ground for mean and green
landscape eating machines.
All is not lost, however. There is still hope.
The key is to not let these unwelcome intruders get
established, Sanders said.
“Watch any suspect field or area for two years,”
Sanders said. “If something comes up and you do not
recognize it, don’t let it go to seed. Nuke it.
“All these invasive species have an introductive phase
then a lag phase that can last two to ten years.”
What happens after the lag phase?

over the world.
If this were a science fiction

“Invasive plants are spread by people!”
Killer plants are also spread by

Wait a minute. Did he say cow
