Principal’s Comment

Kia ora, greetings to all parents, caregivers and friends of the school
This article was written soon after the stunning Black Caps victory over
South Africa in the semi-final of the World Cup. The whole World Cup has
been a magnificent event and one of which all New Zealand can be
immensely proud. Not only have the Black Caps played some sublime cricket
such as in the games against England, Australia and the West Indies it has
been the manner in which they have played the game that has impressed

me the most. They have been adventurous and incredibly positive but most

importantly they have enjoyed what they have been doing and have
displayed sportsmanship of the highest order in the process. They have simply been young men, in
the prime of their careers, playing as well as they ever have and enjoying each and every
moment. They are certainly living the dream and have dared us all to join. This we have done and
whatever the result in the final on Sunday they have done themselves and their country proud.
One of our tasks as educators is to encourage the young people we are privileged to teach for
them to dream of the best possible career pathway and with our help and support be given every
opportunity to achieve it. At East Otago High School we want our students to aim high just like the
Black Caps have done. Too often young people either take the easy option or lack confidence in
their ability to achieve. This should not happen. I do believe, however, that our students often
have an inferiority complex and lack belief. Our NCEA results in 2014 should literally knock that
idea for a six as we have achieved a set of results which are, at every level, quite outstanding. The
Black Caps success has been built on an exceptionally strong work ethic, willingness to seek advice
and guidance and plain old fashioned hard work. Our students need to know that they are
receiving a high quality education at East Otago High School and that if they adopt much of the
ethos displayed by the Black Caps then they too could be unbeatable and destined to succeed.
This will be the last newsletter of what has been an incredibly busy and most worthwhile term.
Even in the remaining few days there are a number of activities and events still to be held such as
the Year 7/8 Rippa Rugby tournament, our Year 9 Science trip to Orokonui, the Senior Art field trip
to Dunedin and our annual summer sports exchange with Tokomairiro High School. I do want to
thank all involved with the school for the contribution they have made to a successful term. Many
people including staff, students and parents give greatly of their time and effort so that we all
benefit. This is often unrewarded and not always acknowledged. This support is, however, much
appreciated.
I trust you all have a happy and restful Easter period.

NCEA For Parents. Did you know...
Did you know that students can gain two types of endorsements. A course, endorsement and a certificate endorsement. The course
endorsement is generally one subject. To gain a course endorsement with merit the student must gain 14 credits or more at merit or
higher with at least three of those credits from sitting external exams. The same goes for gaining a course endorsement at excellence. All
credits for a subject endorsement must be gained in the one academic year.
A certificate endorsement can be achieved by gaining 50 credits or more of either merit of excellence for the respective
certificates. There is NO internal or external requirement and credits can be gained over more than one year.

OTAGO SOUTHLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL ATHLETIC CHAMPS
This event was held in Invercargill last weekend. Athletes left school at 5.30am to head to Surrey Park. As the first event started, so did
the rain. After the first initial heavy shower the rain eased off for the rest of the day and although it was great for the athletes that it wasn’t too hot, it was not the most pleasant conditions to compete in. Our school did have some stand out performances though. Anyone
who places in the top five at this event qualifies for the South Island Champs which are in Nelson this weekend.
Michael Hunter – under 16 boys, 1st long jump 5.94m, 1st triple jump 11.94m, breaking school records for both events. Bob Martin –
under 15 boys, 1st javelin 36.95m, 4th discus 30.42m, Nicole McLeod – under 15 girls, 3rd discus 20.79m, Jessie Scurr – senior girls, 3rd
discus 21.82m, 4th hammer throw 25.54m, 5th javelin 21.00m, Renae Church – under 14 girls, 4th hammer 18.77m, Jack Watson – under
15 boys, triple jump 10.02m, Cameron Dodd – under 15 boys, 5th javelin 32.45m, Hayley Jenkinson – under 15 girls, 5th javelin
21.69m. All seven of these athletes qualified for the South Island champs but because they are in Nelson, we have decided not to make
the trip up there. These students will instead look ahead to the national champs in Timaru in December.
SPORTS PREFECT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Our three sports prefects, Jasmine Neilson, Cameron Bartrum and James Bungard attended this PD session last Wednesday along
with other sports prefects from Otago schools. It was a very useful evening with lots of discussion and sharing of ideas. A massive thank
you to Andrew Neilson for transporting our sports captains to this event.
EQUESTRIAN
The Palmerston mini show was well attended by students from our school. Nicole Bungard riding Diamond Dreams was champion
Standardbred. Sophie Muir riding Lynwood was 1st 95cm and 2nd 85cm show jumping. Pippa Collins riding Sweat Pea was 1st 85cm
and 2nd 95cm show jumping. Jasmine Neilson riding Rednalhgih Macintosh was reserve champion park hack and had a double clear
round in the 85cm and 3rd in the 75cm show jumping. Lauren Keen riding Cookie Time was 3rd in 65cm and 2nd in 75cm show jumping.
Anna Lindsay riding Gypsy had a clear round in the 50cm jumping, Anna also showed Sox who placed 2nd in the matched pair. Katelyn
Toomey on Jack got a 1st , 2nd and 3rd placing in her class and a clear round jumping at 40cm. Hayley Bungard riding Oden got four 3rd’s
and three 4th’s in her class and placed 3rd in riding presentation. The following students are competing this weekend in the Otago
Inter-schools One Day Event: Jasmine Neilson, Rachael Carmichael, Pippa Colins, Jessie Scurr, Anna Lindsay and Sophie Muir.

SWIMMING
The Otago Primary and Secondary School Swimming champs are on this weekend in Dunedin at Moana Pool. On Friday night we have
Madyson Witehira, Lauren Keen and Kayle Harris competing and on Saturday the Primary competitors are Riley Meason, Pippa
Collins, Jordyne Harris, Lily Blasby and Melissa McLeod. The Otago Champs are a very tough competition and we wish these
students well.
Top five placings from the North Otago Swimming Champs held last week were: Riley Meason 5th 50m freestyle, 2nd 50m breaststroke,
3rd 100m individual medley – breaking the school record. Luke Paton 5th 50m backstroke, 4th 100m individual medley. Jared Billyard
3rd 50m breaststroke. Melissa McLeod broke the school record in the 50m freestyle placing 4th, was 5th in the 50m backstroke , 4th
breaststroke and 3rd in 50m butterfly. Zoe Whyte was 4th in 50m butterfly. A big thank you to Kirstin Engelbrecht for managing this
team.
TOKOMAIRIRO HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS EXCHANGE
This coming Wednesday is our annual exchange against our Milton friends. The whole event is held at the Edgar Centre and each year
level plays the same Tokomairiro year level in basketball, volleyball, touch and netball. This is a great event for both our confident and up
and coming sports students. East Otago has retained the trophy for the last four years so this years teams have a lot to live up to.
CRICKET
The Eastern Senior Reserve Cricket team played its final against Waitaki Boys 2nd XI on Saturday in Oamaru. Waitaki Boys were all out
for 157 with Jackson Dempster taking three wickets for 24 runs. Eastern were all out for 138 runs with Brad Primmer making 43.
This placed the Eastern Team 2nd overall in the senior reserve grade, out of seven teams. An outstanding effort for East Otago.
