Through its twofold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lent disposes both the catechumens and the faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. Catehumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, the scrutinies, and catechesis. The faithful, listening more intently to the word of God and devoting themselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit of repentance to renew their baptismal promises” (The Ceremonial of Bishops, 249). Lent is Our Time of Preparation We spend these 40 days drawing closer to God as we prepare for the great celebration of Easter. We pray to deepen our relationship with God and reflect on what type of person we are called to be. We fast to remove the things that get in the way of our relationship with God. In our hunger, we are reminded that everything we have is a gift from God and that there are many who do not have enough to eat. We give alms to our brothers and sisters in need, honoring Jesus’ call to serve our neighbors. From the Pastor: The Fourth Sunday of Lent is traditionally known as Laetare (“Rejoice”) Sunday, so-called from the first word of the entrance antiphon. Laetare, taken from the Latin translation of Is 66:10-11, sets a tone of joyful anticipation of the Easter mystery, as does the permitted use of rose-colored vestments.
