also the sheer volume and complexity of the developments in this area are

This full-day seminar will explore the latest changes at a practical and informative
level and assist practitioners in understanding complex SMSF issues. The topics
covered will assist you in identifying the different tax and compliance issues related
to SMSFs that your clients are facing and provide you with the relevant tools to help
you successfully deal with these issues.

Session 2: Exploring the practicalities of super fund borrowing
The title says it all, this session will cover the practical problems and
solutions in the fast expanding area. Topics for discussion will include:
 How to deal with the banks
 Sign off letters
 Refinancing
 Improvements, the do’s and don’ts
 Acquisitions from related parties
 Buying off the plan, using it to your advantage
 Tenants, and what they can do

Session 3: Property and Superannuation
With the increased ability to invest directly in property since 2007 when the
borrowing rules were introduced, more and more Australians are indulging
their love of bricks and mortar within their SMSF. This session will outline
the tips and traps to consider when investing in property in an SMSF, as
well as alternative structures available.

Session 4: SMSFs & Insurance: A forgotten opportunity or just a
headache?
Since 1 July 2014, the rules surrounding insurances held in SMSF have
been changed drastically and for many has limited the opportunities for
planning for the future. So what exactly are the rules now? What
opportunities are still open to advisers? This session will include:
 A review of the tax implications of insurance in SMSFs
 An update on the current insurance rules
 A case study showing the current planning opportunities available

Session 5: Maintaining Control: Super and Succession
Ensuring proper and accurate control of trust assets, most commonly
Superannuation and Family Trusts, is a critical part of estate planning and
succession. Failure to take adequate steps to maintain control can result in
complete succession failure and the assets falling to unintended
beneficiaries. This session will explore the following:
 Recent cases and examples that highlight the essential concepts
that must be considered in succession planning
 The consequences of not adequately dealing with succession
planning
 The concept of control of assets and how it relates to holistic and
successful estate planning

Session 6: Entering the Pension Phase of Superannuation
Recent statistics indicate that 46% of SMSFs are currently paying
pensions. With the population in Australia aging, more and more super
fund members will enter the draw down phase and commence pensions
from their Super. This session will provide guidance on:
 Pension strategies to consider in transitioning to retirement
 Tips and traps when starting pensions and how to avoid the pit falls
 Commencing a pension under the age of 60 – is it actually
worthwhile?

PROFILES
Greg Bentley, CTA, has been working in the area of
superannuation for over 16 years for some of Australia's leading
superannuation accounting firms. He is the Director of Opulen
Accounting and Superannuation, a specialist chartered
accounting firm that provides administration, compliance and
auditing services to a range of superannuation clients, accounting
firms and financial planners. Greg is a regular public speaker on
superannuation issues for The Tax Institute and SMSF
Association. He is a SMSF Association Specialist Advisor and
Specialist Auditor, Chartered Tax Adviser and a Chartered
Accountant and a previous winner of the SMSF Association CEO
Scholarship Award.
Ron Doig, FTI, practices in superannuation, taxation and related
areas such as estate planning and business and asset
structuring. He advises a wide range of clients including the
accounting profession and other consultants to the business
community, and the financial services industry. Ron is a director
of the West Perth firm Munro Doig.
Con Gotsis, CTA, is the partner in charge of Pascoe Partners'
self-managed superannuation fund division and is the Director
and Responsible Manager of the firm's AFSL company Western
Advisory, a Professional Practice of the Financial Planning
Association of Australia. Pascoe Partners is the largest
independent CPA firm in Western Australia providing taxation,
superannuation, and estate planning advice to over 2,500 client
groups and 750 SMSFs. Pascoe Partners also attend to the
independent audit of over 850 SMSF's. Con has been a CPA for
20 years and has a Masters of Taxation from Curtin University.
Con is a Tax Institute Chartered Tax Advisor and a SPAA
accredited SMSF Specialist Advisor and Auditor. Con also holds
a Diploma of Financial Services (FP) and has been accredited by
CPA Australia as a financial planning specialist and is an Affiliate
of the Financial Planning Association of Australia. Con provides all
forms of taxation and financial planning advice including
superannuation,
retirement
planning,
investment,
risk
management and estate planning to clients of the practice.
Morgan Solomon heads up the Wills and Estates team at Bowen
Buchbinder Vilensky and has been a partner there since 2007. He
has particular interest in Wills and complex Estate Planning,
Contested Estates, Contentious Probate and Administration
matters. He is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate
Practitioners and is the author of the Lexis Nexis practical guides
on non-contentious probate, administration and Wills in WA. His
Estate work is also informed by a very broad range of commercial,
business, property and litigation law experience. Morgan's family
is well known in the legal profession and he is a third generation
Perth lawyer.
Jemma Sanderson, CTA, is a Director at Cooper Partners
Financial Services, heading up their SMSF specialist services.
Jemma provides strategic advice on SMSFs, estate planning and
wealth management to clients, as well as technical support to
accounting, legal and financial planning groups. Jemma has over
14 years’ experience in developing complex strategies for high
net worth clients. Jemma has a Bachelor of Commerce from the
University of Western Australia, and is a Certified Financial
Planner, a Specialist Member of the SMSF Association, a
Chartered Tax Adviser and Trusts and Estate Practitioner.
Jemma is a regular presenter on superannuation and SMSFs for
The Tax Institute and other professional bodies across Australia.
Jemma is the author of the popular SMSF Guide published by
The Tax Institute, currently in its 6th edition, and is the author and
convenor of the Taxation Institute's Graduated Diploma in Applied
Tax Law Advanced Superannuation Unit. She is also the current
chair of The Tax Institutes WA State Council.
Katie Timms, has been with RSM Bird Cameron since 2005 and
has specialised in superannuation since commencing work as an
accountant in 2000. She has significant experience in all areas of
SMSFs, including administration and compliance, asset
acquisition and tax saving strategies, structural assistance and
estate planning. Katie provides advice and assistance to
Trustees, accountants and financial advisors, and heads up the
national RSM Bird Cameron Superannuation committee. Katie
provides regular technical updates for the Institute of Public
Accountants, and has presented for the Tax Institute of Australia,
Legalwise and TV Ed. She has been published in the Australian
Financial Review, the West Australian and Farm Weekly.
