When is it Time for St. Anthony’s Hospice?
Hospice brings compassion,
dignity and hope to people
nearing life’s end
(Alexandria, Va) – For some people living with a life-limiting illness,
there comes a point when cure
is no longer possible. While the
possibility of a cure is gone that
does not mean a patient and family must abandon all hope. Through
hospice care, there is still hope for a peaceful death; hope to spend
final months, weeks or days free of pain; and hope for quality time
with loved ones in the familiar surroundings of home.
“While there isn’t one specific point in an illness when a person
should ask about hospice care, many hospice professionals would
suggest that a person think about hospice long before he or she is in
a medical crisis,” advises J. Donald Schumacher, president and CEO
of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. “In fact,
learning about palliative care and hospice as options is something
that should happen early in the course of a serious illness and not
just in the final days.”
Hospice utilizes a team of professionals and trained volunteers to
provide expert medical care, pain-and-symptom management, and
emotional and spiritual support to patients and family caregivers. All
care is tailored to the individual’s needs and wishes.
Hospice helps individuals and families focus on living as fully as possible.
“Hospice professionals can be important resources for individuals
and families, they can help a person figure out what goals are important and help them get their arms around the fact that their life
may be coming to a close,” noted Schumacher.
Considered to be the model for high-quality, compassionate care
for people nearing the end of life, hospice offers the services and
supports that Americans want when coping with life-limiting illness.
Last year, hospice cared for more than 1.56 million patients in the
US. NHPCO estimates that 41.6 percent of all deaths in the US
were under the care of a hospice program last year.
Facts about hospice:
• Most hospice care is provided in the home. Care is also
provided in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and The Lucy
Smith King Care Center.
• Hospice care is fully covered by Medicare, private insurance, and
by Medicaid in most states.
• Hospice care is not just for people with cancer. Hospices serve
those with advanced Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, lung disease, HIV/AIDS – anyone who is facing a life-limiting illness.
• The hospice benefit pays for medications and medical
equipment related to illness.
• Hospice care is available as long as a doctor believes the patient
is eligible.
• Hospice care can include complementary therapies, such as
music and art, to bring additional comfort.
• Hospice’s offer grief support to the family following the death of
a loved one.
“Ideally, an individual would receive hospice care for the final months
of life – not just the final days,” states Schumacher. “One of the
most common sentiments from families who have been helped by
hospice care is that they wish they had known about hospice or
been referred to hospice sooner.”
A recent report from the Dartmouth Atlas Project looking at care
for patient with advanced cancer at the end of life identified gaps
between individual wishes and care received. This highlights the
need for people to learn about all options available for care.
Additional research published in the Journal of Pain and
Symptom Management found that Medicare beneficiaries who received hospice care lived an average 29 days longer than those
who did not opt for hospice near the end of life.
Hospice: The Desire to Share with All
Mark Chumbler, Executive Director
It is a treat to receive accolades from friends, colleagues, and even strangers regarding how
their lives have been enhanced due to their acceptance of the St. Anthony’s team into
their family. The end of life is such a sensitive time, and it can too often be accompanied
by intense feelings of fear, disappointment, or unease. Therefore, it only adds to our team’s
rewards when families share with us sentiments such as “I didn’t know you did all this” or “I
wish our physician would have suggested your care sooner.”
In an effort to avoid unpleasant experiences at the end of life for any of our friends and neighbors, it is our sincere desire
to serve all families at the end of life in our community. In 2005 we served only 22% of all individuals facing a life-limiting
illness in Northwest Kentucky. Last year we served more than 50% of families at the end of life. This is strong improvement, but it does not suffice when families continue to share how sorry they are they didn’t have hospice care or they
wish they had received it earlier.
In order to better spread our message of dignity, peace, and comfort, we are engaging as many community members as
possible through community focus groups. These groups began last fall and are designed to solicit your desires for the
end of your life and to share how St. Anthony’s can meet your family’s end of life wishes. The feedback from the groups
has been encouraging, and we will continue scheduling approximately one per week for the rest of this year. If you have
positively experienced St. Anthony’s care or you would like to help spread our message, I encourage you to contact me
about how you could serve as a host for a focus group.
Are you open to assisting St. Anthony’s in “guiding and empowering individuals and families along one of life’s most sacred
journeys?”
Leader in Family Satisfaction
Our Family Evaluation of Hospice Care Survey
scores reflect that SAH continues to be among the
nation’s leaders in family satisfaction of hospice care.
St. Anthony’s families continue to positively rate our
response to:
• evening and weekend needs
• the overall care that we give to patient while
under care of hospice
• how we keep the family informed of the
patient’s condition
• the care of each patient’s personal needs.
The feedback that we receive from families on the
overall care and symptom management of our
patients also continues to rank above state and
national averages. We pay close attention to the survey responses on
the graph below because they show that families approve of the way
that we managed their loved one’s pain, breathing, anxiety, sadness,
spiritual support, emotional support, communication with the family,
and overall care of the patient.

Interested in becoming a volunteer at St. Anthony’s Hospice?
By volunteering at St. Anthony’s Hospice, you can make a tangible
difference in the lives of others, and you will receive tremendous
personal satisfaction from the help you provide. Everyone has their
own gifts to share and we can match your talents with existing needs.
Volunteering is a great way to respond to the call for service to
others.
At St. Anthony’s Hospice, volunteers are the heart of what we do,
providing a special kind of care and helping patients and families. That
is what matters most to us!
St. Anthony’s Hospice is currently recruiting volunteers in the
following areas:
•Care Call Program – volunteers call St. Anthony’s Hospice families
every Thursday from 9:30 am – 11:00 am to provide extra support
and ask the needs of the families before the weekend.
•TLC “tender loving care team” – volunteers will send cards or
provide phone calls to patients identified by nurses and social
workers as needing a little extra “TLC”.
•Friday Phone Support – volunteers are needed to help answer the
phones at 2410 S. Green St. office on Friday afternoon from 1-4.
•Administrative support – help provide administrative support for
our office staff on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
•Lucy Smith King Care Center Weekend Team – provide support
for staff at the Lucy Smith King Care Center. Included answering
the phones, visiting with patients and families, and assisting staff with
any requests.
Change is in the Air
With rapid growth in the reach of our mission and in the
regulations which are facing the hospice industry, change has been
a common internal theme at St. Anthony’s Hospice for quite some
time. However, this winter saw more than its fair share of changes
for St. Anthony’s and its personnel.
Recent newsletters have touched on the premise that hospice
reimbursements (primarily from Medicare) are decreasing. In an
effort to meet this challenge and continue as great stewards of
our resources, the organization eliminated two positions effective
March 1st: the Director of Marketing & Development position and
the Bereavement Coordinator position. Unfortunately, that meant
bidding farewell to two valued team members: Jennifer Preston
& Sherry Porter. We re-organized several positions to comfortably accommodate the roles from these two positions. This resulted in increased: outreach duties being assigned to our Director of
Outreach, Kendra Marsh; development tasks being assigned to the
Executive Director, Mark Chumbler; and bereavement tasks being
assigned to Lisa Burke, Social Worker, and Deborah McBride, Chaplain. Although we’re not particularly fond of change, we believe the
reorganization is maintaining our high standards and effectiveness in
each of the respective areas.
Also, our Volunteer Coordinator for much of the past 4 years,
•Family Support Team – providing respite or a break for caregivers
and families. This is an “as needed” opportunity and involves staying
in patient’s home for 2-3 hours during the day.
•Baked With Love Team – provides refreshments for bereavement
support groups and the Lucy Smith King Care Center.
•Maintenance Team -Projects related to gardening could include
things such as planting flowers, pulling/spraying weeds and
spreading mulch. Minor maintenance tasks could include things
such as repairing doors, windows or office furniture as well as
changing fluorescent lights or organizing/maintain
ing storage areas.
•Special Events Team – volunteers will assist with
bereavement camp, memorial services and other
community events.
The U.S. hospice movement was founded by
volunteers and there is continued commitment
to volunteer service. The National Hospice and
Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) estimate
that in 2009 hospice volunteers provided 22 million
hours of service.
If interested in volunteering with St. Anthony’s
Hospice contact Sherry
Porter at (270)-826-2326
or [email protected].
Megan Mortis, has left us in recent days to pursue an exciting new
career opportunity that is commensurate with recent academic accomplishments. Fortunately, we were quickly able to welcome back
Sherry Porter into the Volunteer Coordinator role. With Sherry’s
return we have only displaced one member of our staff with the
earlier reorganization. Sherry’s strengths and recent effectiveness
enhancing the bereavement program will be profitable as we look to
aggressively continue growth in the volunteer program that Megan
started.
Finally, with a decrease in our community relations staff members
and the timing of Megan’s departure, this left us unable to provide
the internal support necessary to assist the volunteer committee
who plans the Pat McCormick Race to Remember. Sadly, we have
decided to forego this event this year in an effort to ensure we don’t
divert necessary resources from our most important work, boldly
meeting our mission in a manner that truly changes lives every day.
We are relieved our dear friend Pat’s memory will continue to be
honored this spring in the May
12th Pat McCormick Memorial
Run being hosted by the local
firefighters union to benefit
their charitable fund.
