GENERAL INFORMATION FOR FOREING STUDENTS
1. General information about the University of Almería.
Almería is located in the south of Spain. It is located in the coast and it has good
weather during all the year. The landscape varies: There are coast, mountains and
desert.
The region has a rich cultural heritage as a result of the history in building
topography, some of them in ruin. The name of Almería derivative from the Arabia
words Al-miraya that means “the mirror of the sea”. Almería starts developing their
Spanish root when the Catholics kings arrived; Fernando and Isabel got the power in
1498 and it appeared Granada’s kingdom.
The University of Almería is a public university in 1993. Nowadays, there are 700
professors and more than 15.000 students. The campus is situated 70 km from
Almería in Cape Gata-Nijar Street (close to the natural park).

1.3 Library
The university library promotes the
access and diffusion of informative
resources. It collaborates in the
generation of student knowledge.
The library offer loaning and consultation of bibliography sources, for all
students registered in the University of Almería. It is also available to use
desktop computer with net connexion and loaning of laptops with Wi-fi. It is
necessary to present the accreditation requested by the librarian. The
regulation of loan can be seen in the following link:

University restaurant is self-service:

On Thurday, there is Paella and on Friday there is
Migas; on one of the dishes to be choose.

• It is included bread, drink and salad (or tomato juice in summer).

1.9 Accommodation
Share apartments with other students: They are private flats. The room
price normally goes round 180 and 250 €/ month. It is not included
electricity and gas expenses. Flats are always accommodates with kitchen,
living room and bathroom.

Daily life in Almería
2.1. Cost of life.
Cost of life in Almería is not so high in comparison with other European cities.
Urban bus: 0,90 euros
Cinema: 5 € (special price on Wednesday = 3,5€)
Share flat: 180-250 €
Coffee: 1-1,2 €
Food: 8-12 € (menu)
2.2. Aperture timetable.
Supermarket: Carrefour, Alcampo, Urende,.. - From 10 to 22 hours.
Shops and other supermarket - From 9 to 2 and from 5 to 8 hours.
Publics entity: post office, sanity, – From 9:00 to 2:00 hours.
Bank: Caixa, Cajamar, It depends of the day of the week and banks, but
generally - from 8:00 to 2:00 hours.
2.3. Costum
• Siesta consist in sleep after eat the dinner.
• Tapeo
It is typical to drink beer with tapas; all is included in the price. People usually
company the tapas with rations as an informal dinner. It consists in warm and
cold delicious dishes.
• Gastronomy
A custom of the warm urban areas is to eat Migas when it rains and it’s cold
weather. In Almería they are made with hard wheat semolina farina. It is
complementate with “tropezones”: radish, herring or fish, black pudding,
chorizo, fried pepper and small portions of fried loin of pork.
• Meal timetable:
Breakfast is taken Fromm the first hour of the morning to 12:00.

Dinner occurs from 1:00 to 4:00 in the
afternoon.
Lunch is taken between 8:00 and 11:00 in the evening.
• Popular parties. They are typical of the villages, towns and the capital of the
province. There are activities such as popular dancing, eating paella, bull
fighting, children plays and competitions, attractions for children and adults

Health
4.1. Medical insurance
European sanitary card: The European Sanitary Card is
valid for all European citizens who move round the
European economic space, that is, the European Union,
Norway, Iceland and Swiss.
Each member state is responsible of the production and
distribution of the European card in their territory. The
valid period is determinate by the institution of
expiration.
When arriving to Spain, students should go to the closer
medical centre and fill the application to register temporally in social
security. It is first needed to have accommodation. A doctor will be
appointed to the student. So, when the student needs medical assistance,
there will have the same assistance as a Spanish citizen.
For no EU students, they need their own sanitary card. First days, they
should go to one of the closer sanitary centres of their temporal home (6th
section) and ask. In these centre, there are specialized people who solve all
questions.

Almería
6.1. Weather
The average of sunny days per year is 320, Almería and the Almería coast has
the best weather of Spain. Nowadays, Almería is like a desert, it only rains a few
days during the winter. It’s a perfect localization during all the year. The
summer temperature usually is higher than 30 degrees. It’s a warm weather but
it’s close to the sea, so it is better carried out. In winter, the temperature is
round 20 degrees, and normally the clouds are out.
6.2 How to arrive to Almería
By plane: There is an airport in Almería situated in the outskirts. The companies
that operate in the airport are: Iberia, Ibinter, Condor, Lufthansa, Air-Berlín, Air
2000, Britania, Airtours, Monarc,

• Line 20, every 40 minutes. It costs 0, 90 cents.

6.3. Monuments and museums
Alcazaba of Almería: Built by
Abderramán III, it is basically a Muslim
stronghold with three precincts. The first
precinct was the barracks and could be
used as shelter in the case of siege; the
second one included the palatines
facilities and the third was ordered to be
built by the Catholics kings after the
Christian Reconquest.

Jayrán´s Wall and San Cristóbal´s Hill: From the Alcazaba to the North,
this wall descends through the Ravine of La Hoya and reaches San
Cristóbal’s Hill, which was built in the 11th century. In this hill, you can find
remainders of a Christian keep (often thought as templar). It is the best
viewpoint of the city and the sea in town and it is located at the Image of
Jesus’ heart, built in 1930.
Jayrán’s Arabic aljibes: They were ordered to be built by this king in XI
century (Taifa period). Divided in three main buildings, they were used as
water supply of the whole city.
Caliphal wall: Located in the corner of the Atazanas Street and Nicolás
Salmerón park, this wall dates from the foundation of the city in the 10th
century. It was used to close the old district of La Medina but, nowadays, it
is part of the interpretation centre of Almería, both of which it is possible to
sightsee and a nearby salting factory from the Roman period, also located in
this area.
Arqueologyc museum: Inaugurated in 2006, it
houses archaeological findings located in the county
dating from the prehistoric to the Muslim period,
most of which corresponding to excavations carried
out by the famous archaeologist Luis Siret.

Seismology museum: It the geophysical observatory of Almería. It has
seismology instruments dating from 1911 and a
seismogram file, informative material and a projector
room.
Art Centre of Almería´s Museum (ACAM): Located
in a detached house of regionalist tradition in Barcelona

square linked to the railroad station, it was
built in 1927 by Guillermo Langle Rubio and houses temporary expositions
of contemporary art.
Timetable: From Tuesday to Saturday, from 11.00 to 14.00 h. and
from 18.00 to 21.00 h. Monday, from 18.00 to 21.00 h. Sunday and
holidays, from 11.00 a 14.00 h. Close: January 1st y 6th and
December 25th.

proper accreditation); 1 € (for people older than 65 years with
accreditation and children between 7 and 12 years). Children under 7
are not allowed in
Olive Oil museum: Located in a typical house in the old part of the town, it
houses an old “almazara” (an olive stone mill) where the whole process of
making oil is explained; inside, it is also possible to see how the typical
streets of Almería were in the 19th
century.

Civil War Refuge: It was built in 1938 by the Almerian architect Guillermo
Langle Rubio in order to give shelter to the citizens
during the bombardments carried out by the
National Band. Nowadays, it is used as a museum
and memento from the events of that period where
it is possible to see documents and objects of those
years and also a reconstructed operating theatre
used during the raids.

Faluca Almariya: It is a replica of a Hispanic-Muslim ship dating from the
10th – 14th century period. The museum is set in the ship warehouse where
it is possible to see the importance of the relation between the Mediterranean
Sea and one of the most important ports of Al-Andalus. You can find the
ship at the Sportive Port (Puerto Deportivo) of the Sea club (Club de Mar).
