GUIDED NATURE WALKS
June-July-August
Wed-Sundays at 1:30pm
Join our docent for a 3/4 mile
walk around the Rodak Loop to
learn about the history, flora
and fauna of the Eagle River
valley. Sign in at the front desk.
POLICIES for attending programs:
Regular programs are free, but some require registration.
Parking: ERNC members park free; all others pay a fee of
$5/vehicle. Note that Alaska State Park permits are not accepted.
Outdoor programs involve walking on Nature Center trails.
Participants are asked to sign a waiver.
Children always need to be accompanied by adults. For
safety reasons, each adult may have no more than two
children under the age of 6 on an outdoor program.
These programs are not intended for organized groups.

KNEEHI NATURALIST (Registration req’d)
Today’s theme is BEAVERS. This nature-based program
is designed for preschoolers aged 2-5 together with a
parent. Dress for the outdoors. Limited to 10 children
registered at 694-2108. Kneehi meets every 1st and 3rd
week, alternating with Little Explorers.

AROUND THE BEAVER POND
Join us on an exploration around the beaver pond. Learn
what all grows, swims, and nests in this rich wetlands
ecosystem that was shaped by the industrious beavers.

LIVING WITH FIRE (Registration required)
Wildfires play an important role in Alaska’s environment.
Forester John See of the Wildfire Mitigation Office will talk
about the different stages of forest succession, and what
to do as a homeowner and recreationist to coexist with
this major dynamic force of nature. Find out more about
the Firewise Home Assessment Programs offered by
the Anchorage Fire Department. Indoor program. Note
that a minimum of 20 people is required for this program to
be held -- please register at 694-2108 to participate.

Guided Walk for Families with Preschoolers
LITTLE EXPLORERS HIKE
Join us for a short (<1 mile) walk to explore nature at the
pace of a preschooler. Please, no school-aged siblings.
No more than 2 children per adult. No pre-registration.

Special Workshop (Cost $95; Registration required)
NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY Workshop
Looking to learn more about your digital camera and outdoor
photography? This all-day intensive photo class is for you!
After a brief classroom period, you will head out on the trails
to sharpen your skills with ERNC’s Artist-in-Residence, Colin
Tyler Bogucki, colintyler.com, who has been photographing
for publications for nearly 20 years. Attendees must provide
their own camera gear (digital SLR only) and be prepared to
hike a minimum of five miles
throughout the day.
Cost $95; limited to 10 people

All-Ages Program BEAR SAFETY
Are you worried about hiking, biking or camping in bear
country with your family? Naturalist Ute Olsson will
discuss ways to stay safe. Optionally after the program,
adults have a chance to practice using bear spray.

Guided Hike (Registration required)
BENT ON ECHO BEND
Join volunteer Sandy Halstaed for a 6 mile round-trip hike
to Echo Bend. Hikers must be in good shape, but can be
beginners. Bring pack with water, snack and wind/
raingear. Limited to the first 12 people (ages 18 and older)
who register at 694-2108.

A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO HIKING CROW PASS
Thinking of hiking Crow Pass Trail but not sure what to
expect? Join Laura Kruger and Pete Panarese to learn
about the typical trail conditions, fording Eagle River, what
gear to bring along, and many other useful tips.

What lives in our creeks? Let’s grab some nets to catch
and release macro-invertebrates such as caddisfly and
mayfly larvae. Bring rubber boots and dress for messy

SOLSTICE & FATHER’S DAY HIKE
Join us for a 3-mile round trip hike on the Albert Loop.
We’ll have s’mores on to the gravel bar. Limited to the first
12 people registered at 694-2108.
What are some kid-friendly options?
LITTLE EXPLORERS HIKES are designed for families with
preschoolers ages 2-5. This is a short guided
walk (<1 mile) aimed at exploring nature at the
pace of the child (siblings welcome). No preregistration needed. Length is 1 hour.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY HIKES are guided walks of
2-3 miles designed for families with school-aged
children (siblings welcome). Pre-registration is
required. Length is approximately 2 hours.
KNEEHI NATURALIST PROGRAMS are themed
nature-based educational programs designed for
families with preschoolers ages 2-5 (no schoolage siblings, but babies ok). Pre-registration is
required. Length is 1 hour.
* JUNIOR NATURALIST PROGRAMS are themed nature-based
education programs designed for families with children in grades
K-6. Most are walk-in, but a few do require pre-registration. Length
is approximately 1-1.5 hours.
* ALL-AGES PROGRAMS are general audience adult programs
deemed accessible to school-aged children with a special interest
in the topic. Walk-in. Length is approximately 1-1.5 hours.
* School-age children can earn their Junior Naturalist Badge
by attending 12 programs. Ask at the front desk
to start a punch card. Cards are punched only for
programs designated as Jr. Naturalist Program or
All- Ages Program, but not for guided walks or
craft programs.

Rodak Trail, or the Iditarod Trail
between the Eagle River Nature
Center and the Four Corners Junction,
unless the dog or other pet is on a
leash not exceeding nine feet in length
and is under control by a person at all
