Harris There is no end to the number of insightful quotes by historical figures about the importance of education, yet as we approach another provincial election, the outlook for our education system is bleak. While we understand that current economic realities have hit hard for many of our families, we maintain that “an investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” (Benjamin Franklin). Under the current education budget proposed for 2015-16, we will be looking at the possibility of larger classes, fewer supports for students with special needs, and compromised programming for all students. While government is telling school boards to spend their reserves, neither they nor the media are overly publicizing the fact that this can only happen with Ministerial approval. At best, funding for education is both inconsistent and unpredictable from year to year, making it very challenging to plan long term and this coming year stands to be very difficult. If you are unsure about the potential implications of the 2015-16 education budget cuts on your child’s education, please take time to get informed, and please make sure to vote on May 5th! ESBCHS will be a polling station from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm on May 5th which we see as a great opportunity for our students to see what an election looks like and to discuss their thoughts and questions with their teachers and their peers. Our school year continues to roll along with no end to the positive achievements and efforts of students and staff alike. So many things going on…One Act Festival, 30 Hour Famine, Celebration of the Arts, Vimy, Cheer, Soccer, Rugby, Track and Field, Mentorship Program, Art Club, Projet Partage, just to name a few…the list is long! This June we also look forward to holding our first annual Colour Night, a banquet dedicated to recognizing our teams and athletes and their accomplishments this year… stay tuned for details! Also approaching quickly in June is Grad. There is a lot of work to be done in class between now and then, but there are also details students need to take care of in order for the ceremony to succeed. All students on the grad list must ensure they submit their deposit for their Grad gown and stole by May 1st. These are refundable deposit upon their return immediately following the ceremony, but having ALL students in gowns and stoles truly enhances the ceremony. Please note that our school will also be going live with Acorn on May 1st. Some parents may be familiar with Acorn online payment system if they have children in other schools in town, however this will be new to many parents. Please be aware that effective May 1st, you will need to connect through your PowerSchool (Continued on page 2) Bandit News Page 2 account to access Acorn to make all school related payments from this point forward. An online parent payment guide will be available on our website under “Fees and Payment” under the Parents tab. Speaking of school fees…you may have noticed the absence of fee amounts for the 2015-16 school year in the student handbook while your child worked through the registration process. With the new Education Act coming into effect in September, it appears as though we may be required to begin charging fees on more of a “user-pay” model. Currently our fees for Grade 9-11 are based on a flat rate, while our Grade 12’s are charged on a user-pay model. We are currently working on a new model that we hope to be sustainable and fair but that also allows us to continue to run our wide range of excellent programming. While we re not looking to raise fees for the sake of raising them, our school fees have not increased since 2007. School fees were discussed at the last School Council meeting and we will be sharing our proposed new model along with Council’s feedback to Central Office for the Board to review at it’s May meeting for approval. My hope is that we will be able to share with parents in June what they might expect to pay for school fees in August. In spite of the current budgetary turmoil, I often remind myself that we truly do work in a great school with amazing kids and supportive families in a thriving community. I know our staff feels the same way and I have every confidence that they will continue to provide the best learning environments possible in the face of challenging circumstances. We have a highly dedicated school staff and your support and understanding is greatly appreciated! Junior High athletes will get their chance to compete on May 26 and June 2. Go Bandits! One Acts This month, the Bandits Drama Students participated in The Zone One Act Festival. We couldn't be prouder of all our in-house participants. We enjoyed the work of over 50 students who performed, directed, and were crew members to seven One Acts in our school on April 13th, 14th and 15th. From our in-house festival, three plays were chosen to represent ESBCHS at The Zone Level: Swiss Pajamas, A Night in the Ukraine and If Men Played Cards as Women Do. All three were performed spectacularly and were met with positive feedback from both the adjudicator and the audience. We are so happy for Brett Hogg, who won a Best Supporting (Male) Actor award for his role in Swiss Pajamas. I also couldn't be prouder of some of the hardest working seniors I know. A Night in The Ukraine took home the most awards of any show at the festival, Devon Eshpeter received a Best Lead Actor award for his role of Samovar. Also, Tia Yakabovich won Best Supporting Actor (Female) and Kate Haynes won an award for her lighting design and execution. The entire cast and director Emi Reich also received the Keith Ewasiuk Award for Best Ensemble. We had an unforgettable experience at One Acts this year and many lessons were learned: lessons that we can't get in a classroom: lessons we can only learn from building something, loving it and having to see it come to an end. It is always hard to say goodbye to a cast, crew and show so I will call on lines from the song For Now, from Mr. Keith Ewasiuk's favorite show. “Take a breath, look around Swallow your pride for now. Nothing last, life goes on Full of surprises You’ll be faced with problems Of all shapes and sizes You’re going to have to make A few compromises for now But only for now” - Avenue Q Submitted by Chantal Yardely Page 5 Bandit News Grad Banquet Committee This year's Graduation Banquet will be held on Friday, June 26th at the Expo Centre. Bringing home a bronze medal in girls singles was Malea Calvert, capturing a bronze medal in mixed doubles were Ethan Ochitwa and Ressa Van Egmond and fighting hard for a silver medal in girls' doubles were Emily Boutin and Brianna Lacquement. A big thanks to Mr. Kullman for coaching these kids. Cheer Team Wrap Up Cheer has really made a resurgence here at Beaumont Composite High School. We started the year with only one returning athlete, but through word of mouth, an amazing coach and the decision to go competitive, we were able to assemble a great group of student athletes. Krysta Ivers and Kaitlin Lamb served as our cheer coaches and put their heart and soul into putting together an amazing routine for our team to perform. Their expertise was invaluable. Unfortunately we didn't place, but we learned some valuable lessons. As a result we used the feedback and adapted our routine for the All Star Cheer Extravaganza where we placed first in our category! We will be holding tryouts at the end of May or beginning of June, and posters will be going up at the high school with more details. So if you like to push yourself to see how far you can go...why not try cheer? The season runs from September to April, on Mondays and Wednesdays. to be a member of this team. Bandit Makes U16 Alberta Provincial Basketball Team Congratulations to Taha Hussain, a grade 10 student and member of the Bandits Sr. Boys team. Taha recently was selected to represent Alberta at the Western Canada Summer Games held in Wood Buffalo/Ft. McMurray in August. This is his first tryout with Basketball Alberta and is very excited Bandits Basketball Season Wrap up The second half of the season proved to be quite exciting, fun, and prosperous for the Senior Boys’ Basketball Team. The Bandits went to the 16-team tournament in Forestburg on Jan. 30-31 and left as Champions! An exciting and close championship game occurred against Wm. Hay HS (Stettler) with the Bandits emerging with a 6-point win. The Bandits then returned to their league schedule winning four of their 5 games. ESBCHS finished in second place with only 1 loss. The final tournament of the Bandits’ season occurred at in Lloydminster. At this tournament, the Bandits won their first two games and faced a formidable team from Saskatoon who emerged victorious. League playoffs saw the Bandits win their Quarter and Semi-Final games before playing Archbishop Oscar Romero HS in the league final. The Bandits finished in 2nd Place for Division III of the Metro League for the 2014-2015 Season. The Bandits challenged for the right to advance to Zone Playoffs, but were defeated by Edmonton Christian High School. The team finished with a record of 22 wins and 8 losses. One of our players was selected to the list of MVPs for the season; Marcus Hunter was selected as one of ten male basketball players from among more than 34 teams, which is quite an achievement as Marcus is only in Grade 10. WELL DONE, MARCUS!! Marcus will receive more formal recognition at a special luncheon on June 2 sponsored by Jostens, Inc., The Edmonton Journal and the Metro Athletic League. The future of the Boys’ Basketball team looks very promising as 7 of the 10 team members will be returning next season and a strong contingent of young men are moving up from the Grade 9 team. Unfortunately, we say goodbye to our three Gr. 12 players: Ray Bolatchiev, Karanjeet Sandhu, and Phil Tarnowski (co-captain). We wish them the best for their athletic and academic futures. submitted by Mr. Kruse Page 7 Bandit News Winspear Celebration of the Arts Join Black Gold Regional Schools in a celebration of student art, film, photography, drama and musical performances.
