Sustainable, locally sourced & handmade.
Capturing the spirit of the mountains.
I am constantly impressed by the ingenuity and creativity
I see here in Asheville and surrounding mountain towns
of Western North Carolina. From breakthroughs in the
world of beer brewing to the amazing culinary arts scene,
Asheville has inspired me to design pieces that speak to
evolving tastes.
This season’s cover art displays our local depiction of the Worlds Fair; highlighting
one our most treasured and inspirational assets: The Blue Ridge Mountains.
Over the years, the World’s Fair has represented technological inventions and
advancements, nation branding, as well as cultural exchanges in promoting
peace and sustainability. In our business and production process, we work very
hard to represent similar values. In order to compete within the atmosphere of
global competition, we find it absolutely necessary to take advantage of new
principals and advances in manufacturing. We aim to do this in a way that does
not distract from the quality and design of our trademark standard. While we are
a young, six-year-old company, we truly understand the value of building our
company on a solid foundation. We value the materials we work with everyday
and take the utmost care in production.
Hoss Haley, our featured artist for this season’s Lookbook, inspires us with
his eclectic use of various metals. Haley’s expertise within this medium adds
contrast and depth to our designs. We feel sure his collaborative work will please
your eye as much as it does ours.
In our Barn To Table story, we celebrate our region’s thriving microbrewery
scene featuring the Heidi Beer Garden Table. Here we explore the importance
of fellowship over good food and drink and take a look at Autumn’s prized apple
crop. From home brewing hard cider to growing your own orchard, we close this
section with a special recipe for classic apple pie with butter crust, because after
all, we want our pieces to become part of your seasonal celebrations.
See what we do. See what we like. See who we are.
We look forward to getting to know you.

Our Story
An Environmentally & Socially Conscious Company
“I set out to develop a company that could compete in the marketplace and also be immune to the onslaught of lowcost Asian imports. It is about giving people options, suggestions, and one-of-a-kind products tailor-made for their
homes. I believe most people are starting to really care about and consider the origin of their purchases. It’s not always
about who offers the lowest price, but who offers the highest value.”
—Darren Green, founder
In 2007, founder Darren Green wanted to develop a different
company—one that considered both environmentally and
socially conscious issues. It was not a fad or a buzzword, it
was the idea that businesses should care about the origin

Environmental Initiatives
We are located in Asheville, North Carolina, in the heart of
the Blue Ridge Mountains. To be more specific, we operate
out of a 10,000-square-foot space in the River Arts District—
the very epicenter of the artist community in Western North
Carolina. As a commitment to sustainability, we inventory
more than 6,000 board feet of reclaimed lumber at any one
time. It’s stacked by species, size and thickness, which
enables us to choose the very best lumber to complete the
project. We have equipped the building with LED lighting
throughout 95% of the space, giving us an energy efficient
alternative to the standard fluorescent or HID warehouse
lights. An 800-square-foot finishing room is also equipped
with a highly efficient filtration system, which is extremely
beneficial to the indoor air quality.
• Use of old, reclaimed lumber taken from structures
deemed irreparable
Our crew of talented mountain craftsmen consists
of classically trained woodworkers, wood finishers,
blacksmiths, metalworkers and metal finishers. Each one
of them evokes the essence of their skill in each finished
piece. Every step, from selecting the reclaimed wood to
packaging for transport, is meticulously examined to
ensure the quality meets the standards we set for ourselves;
needless to say, we’re hard on our own work.
• Use of LED lighting in 95% of the woodshop
Come visit us at 99 Riverside Drive in Asheville’s River
Arts District. We are open to the public Monday through
Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., by appointment only. Or, you
can reach us by e-mail at [email protected] or

American Chestnut
Castanea dentata
There was a time when the American
chestnut was the very heart of our
forests. This deciduous hardwood
reached heights up to 150 feet,
10 feet in diameter, and grew
from Maine to Mississippi and
from the Atlantic coast across the
Appalachian Mountains to the Ohio
River Valley. Many wild animals
depended on the nuts, which
would fall in such abundance,
blanketing the forest floor. Rural
folk depended on the nuts too (as
did their livestock), for they were
tasty and nutritious.

Wood Species
Blue Ridge Heritage RECLAIMED WOOD
Our reclaimed lumber is sourced locally from Western
North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee and West Virginia.
All of the structures slated for reclamation have been
deemed a liability and unsafe by the landowner. After a
thorough inspection of the structure, and calculating the
usable board feet of the material, a deal is struck and the
dismantling process begins. Depending on the season and
the conditions, our team of reclamation experts will often
camp on-site, dismantling the structure board by board,
carefully removing each iron nail one at a time, taking extra
care not to damage the lumber in the process. The lumber is
then kiln dried to stabilize the moisture content to between
six to eight percent while also exterminating any unwanted
insects that might otherwise destroy the wood over time.
Once received, the lumber is then sorted by length and
condition and carefully racked and placed in inventory.

Blue Ridge SOURCED barn wood
As barns that stood proudly on family land for
generations become structurally unsafe, The Old
Wood Company carefully restores their charm
and integrity. It is with great care and pride that,
board by board, we unearth the history of these
treasured, iconic structures. It’s like unwrapping
a present, removing the layers of dust and dirt to
reveal the beauty of an old-growth piece of lumber.
Once exposed, the lumber will showcase all of its
history. Nail holes represent the original construction
purpose of the material; worm holes highlight the
vulnerability of the wood to the outside elements;
tight knots showcase the continued growth and
strength of the tree; growth rings tell the age and
seasonal pattern of the tree’s growth; and unique
grain patterns explain how the board was originally
milled. These are the traits that make working with
reclaimed lumber so incredibly intriguing.

the oLD WOOD COmpany
In the early 1900s, the American chestnut provided timber
unrivaled in quality. Straight-grained and strong, easy
to work and rot resistant, chestnut lumber was used for
everything from structural barn beams to furniture.
That time is gone. It is estimated one out of four trees in
Appalachian forests was an American chestnut prior to the
arrival of the deadly chestnut blight, a fungal disease that
destroys the bark tissues. Though it’s believed the fungus
was introduced in the late 1800s, carried over on the boughs
of blight-resistant Asian chestnut trees, the first recorded
incident was in 1904 at the Bronx Zoo in New York City.
The blight moved outward at a remarkable pace, killing
an estimated four billion trees. Today, all that is believed to
remain of this once grand species is fewer than 100 large
trees with girths of more than 24 inches.
But thanks to developments in genetics and plant pathology,
the chestnut can reign again. Established in 1983 by a group
of scientists, The American Chestnut Foundation is leading
the way in restoring the tree to its native range within the
woodlands of the eastern United States using a scientific
research and breeding program known as backcrossing.
The technique cross-pollinates the American chestnut with
the blight-resistant Chinese chestnut. The first generation
hybrids are then bred back with American trees, diluting
the foreign genes and bringing the native ones to the fore.
The result is a tree that looks like an American chestnut, but
is blight resistant.
White Oak
The red oak’s stout branches grow at right angles to the
stem, forming a narrow, rounded crown. It grows rapidly
and is tolerant of many soils and varied situations, although
it prefers well-drained stream borders. Hailed as one of
the most important oaks for timber production in North
America, the wood is highly valued for its interior uses.
Lacking the tyloses indicative of white oak, the red oak’s
wood grain is porous.
WALNUT

Movement. White oaks have cellular structures called
tyloses, which prevent water from passing. This leak-proof
characteristic is why the wood is often used for making wine
and whiskey barrels. Other uses for the hardwood include
interior construction and ship building; the most notable
vessel was the USS Constitution, also known as Old Iron
Sides, built in 1794.
Red Oak
Quercus rubra
A native of North America, the red oak grows in slightly
acidic soil from southeastern Canada to Alabama and as far
west as Oklahoma. In forests, the tree grows straight and
tall, upward of 115 feet with a trunk diameter up to three
feet. Open-grown trees do not get as tall, but can develop a
stouter trunk up to six feet in diameter.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

which should help clarify
the process.
the worst and hope for the best.
However, we take the utmost care
and caution when approaching
each important decision. After
years of deconstruction under
our belts, we have found that the
dismantling of each barn must be
approached on a project-by-project
basis, taking into consideration the
condition of the support members
and roof as well as the foundation.
1.Where does most of
the lumber come from?
The majority of the barn wood
we use comes from deteriorating
wooden structures, sometimes
found just around the corner from
our woodshop in Asheville, or a
few hours drive to neighboring
Tennessee.
9. What is your favorite
type of wood and why?

Oftentimes, multigenerational
landowners take the initial step to
clear their property of dilapidated
structures by contacting us. These
are buildings that have been
used as livestock barns, dairy
barns, and the like. After an initial
inspection to determine the quality
and condition of the lumber, we

structures were built sometime
in the early 1900s; some even
date back the to the late 1800s.
That means the lumber milled
to build these barns came from
old-growth oak trees, which were
most likely planted around the
turn of the 19th century.
4. Any interesting
historical facts of any
barns you’ve taken
down? Yes, some were built
during the pre and post Civil War
era. Other barns have been on
family farms for generations.
5. What kind of
interesting artifacts do
you find? Oftentimes we find
vintage farm and woodworking
tools, and, of course, the
occasional family of bats.
6. How long does it take
to dismantle a barn?
Some barns can be dismantled in a
few days depending on the size and
scope of the project, while others
take upward of several weeks to
complete. In milder seasons, the
team of reclamation experts will
elect to camp out on the property,
using scrap wood to make fire for
cooking and warmth.
7. Is this a dangerous
profession? Like most
construction professions, safety
is the number one concern in
deconstruction. It is always a
challenge to not only dismantle
the barn safely, but to do so in a
way that protects the material from
being damaged.
8. Any scary moments
while dismantling?
When dealing with structures
that have been sitting untouched
or neglected for as long as these
buildings have, there will always
be moments when one must make
quick decisions. We plan for
In our line of work, finding
American Chestnut is always very
exciting. It could be compared to
a miner panning for hours, days,
or weeks and finally striking gold.
While many landowners claim to
have American Chestnut, it is often
not the case. So to come across a
barn built with that coveted species
is always thrilling.
10. What do you do with
all those nails? All nails are
removed from the boards prior to
kiln drying. The nails have been
used to adorn small projects, but
most often, they are gathered for
recycling and taken to the scrap
metal yard for a small payoff.

Heidi Beer Garden Table
Eat, Drink &

Here at the Old Wood
Compan y, certain things
are sacred. We va lue a

devoted to bringing the
art of in tim acy back to
e n tertaining.
With so many distractions of modern
living, we strive to create pieces
intended to suspend time, may it
be for the expanse of an evening,
or simply for the time it takes to
sip a frothy pint with a friend.
Before the dawn of portable
electronics and virtual meetings,
interactions were held in tactile
spaces. Taverns were a place to
gather news, with dining tables
serving as communal meeting places,
enlivened by ample food and drink.
Business deals could take place over
dark beer and hearty fare with as
much security as written contract.
Perhaps it is time to bring back some
of these age-old traditions, and what
better way to do so than with a table
hand crafted for sitting and enjoying
a drink.
As with so many of our custom
pieces, we have an idea in mind when
creating our designs. The Heidi Beer
Garden Table lends itself to robust
outdoor gatherings or less numerous

crowds with seamless versatility. Bordered by benches or
a few chairs, those seated around its thermo-treated ash
surface gain the advantage of warm proximity. Unlike a
standard sized table, the Heidi’s narrow width brings its
congregation closer, creating the perfect place to catch
up and enjoy libations.

APPLES
Essential also to commercial applications, the aptly
named Heidi Beer Garden Table is the answer to brewery
or restaurant seating. Its thoughtfully crafted dimensions,
set on rolling casters, allow it to fit into discreet spaces,
while offering those seated around it an opportunity for
easy conversation.
Additionally, as the ash wood surface gracefully silvers
with time, the Heidi Beer Garden Table’s natural steel
frame weathers harmoniously, so you can enjoy this piece
for as long as you enjoy the art of sitting and savoring.

fruit trees. Grafting desirable

Noble Hard Cider: North Carolina Grown

Noble Hard Cider was founded
by a small team of visionaries
with a mission to commercially
produce hard cider using locally
grown, North Carolina apples.
Many of Noble’s partner apple
farms are located in Henderson
County, where over sixty-five
percent of North Carolina’s apples
are grown. Sip Noble’s notoriously
crisp hard ciders locally at
the Wedge Brewery, Altamont
Brewing, All Souls Pizza, French
Broad Chocolates and more.
Naturally gluten-free, and void
of any artificial additives, Noble
Hard Cider gives you extra
incentive to buy your own.

Homemade Apple Pie
with Butter Crust:
Few desserts resonate like homemade apple
pie made with tart, fresh apples, buttery pastry
and a hint of cinnamon. The ingredients for this
dish are few, so start by selecting high quality
apples in late summer and fall to harness the
season’s classic flavor.
Serve warm with fresh whipped cream
or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Filling:
• 10 large apples of a multiple varieties, (not red delicious)
peeled, cored and sliced thin
• Juice from one lemon
• 1/8 cup raw cane sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 5 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
• 1 large egg white, beaten with a splash of water
In a large mixing bowl, toss apple slices with lemon juice, sugar
and cinnamon. Place mixture in par-baked pie shell (see recipe
below). Sprinkle mixture evenly with cubes of cold butter, before
covering with top layer of pastry.
Pastry Dough:
• 2 1/2 cups organic all purpose flour
• 2 teaspoons sea salt
• 2 sticks high quality unsalted
butter, cold
• 6-8 tablespoons ice water
Preheat oven to 375.
Even Johnny Appleseed
primarily planted apple
trees better suited for hard
cider than eating, aiding his
historic popularity. Rustic
ingredients from fruit and
honey to corn and wheat are
easily transformed into lively
brews by the careful process
of fermentation.
Whether you have a taste for
wine or mead, frothy beer
or hard cider, with the right
equipment and knowledge,
effervescent libations can
easily succeed at home.
Finding a source for high
quality fruit, grain or honey
is the first step to well crafted
home brews. The rest is a
matter of simple steps and a
little bit of time, followed by
bountiful reward.

Place flour and salt in a food processor. Pulse. Add the butter
and blend until it resembles a course meal. Slowly pour in the ice
water with blade running just until dough forms.
Turn out onto a floured work surface. Divide dough. Form into 2
thick disks and wrap in parchment. Chill for 15 minutes.
Return one disk of dough to work surface. Roll out with a rolling
pin to about 1/4 inch thickness, and transfer to a pie dish. Trim
and crimp edges. Weight pastry with pie weights or dry beans
over parchment and bake for 10 minutes. Remove pie shell from
oven and remove weights. Fill with apple mixture and set aside.
Increase oven to 450.
Roll out second pastry disk to 1/4 thickness and place over apple
mixture. Make a few small cuts in center of pasty to vent steam.
Trim edges and crimp. If desired, reform any remaining dough
trimmings and cut out decorative shapes with small cookie cutters to
adorn pie shell. Brush with egg wash and place on a baking sheet to
catch any spill over liquid.
Bake at 450 on center rack for 10 minutes then reduce heat to 350
and bake for an additional hour or until top crust is golden and
apples are soft and aromatic. Tent with foil if browning occurs to
quickly.
Allow pie to rest for at least 30 minutes before
slicing and serving.

The Wood Jam
Blast from the Past
&
The Wood BOOM
On Sound Innovation
If producing contemporary
rustic furnishings is all you
imagined The Old Wood Co.
was capable of, think again.
Founder Darren Green likes to keep things
fresh with a side of fun by introducing a new
limited edition product for market every year.
He’s brought customers The Old Wood Co.
dartboard, record player, and as of late, it’s
the portable Wood Boom boombox and the
smaller Wood Jam, both capable of blasting
your favorite tunes for outdoor gatherings,
tailgate parties, or on the job site.
The need for tunes at The Old Wood Company’s
job site, a 10,000-square-foot wood shop in
Asheville’s River Arts District, inspired the
portable players. Perhaps a stereo would have
sufficed, but as a child of the ’80s, Green was
drawn to that icon of urban youth and hiphop culture, synonymous with bands like The
Beastie Boys and The Clash. “I never owned a
boombox,” he says, “but sure wished I did.”
Making up for lost time, Green has created a
boombox for the 21st century that adheres to
his modern-rustic aesthetic. Both the Wood
Boom and Wood Jam feature 6.5-inch full-range
speakers, 20-watt amplifiers, are affixed with
3.5mm jacks for iPad and other MP3 devices as
well as headphones and electric instruments,
and operate on rechargeable batteries. While
the sound power rivals that of other similar
products, where The Old Wood Co. always
comes out on top is in the craftsmanship.
More than just a boombox, Wood Boom and
Wood Jam are finely crafted in veneer walnut,
and feature solid walnut knobs and handforged iron handles. For easy transport, the
Wood Jam also comes with a leather strap
made by Asheville artisan Evar Hecht and
metal buckle tag by Tina Councell of Iron
Maiden Studios. And given the nuances in the
wood grain and other handmade components,
no two products are exactly alike. Only a limited
number of each have been produced, so order
your one-of-a-kind player today and get your
jam on.

founder’s STATEMENT
It is our goal to continue
on the track of progress
and
to
develop
designs
that question whether it is
simply a piece of furniture
or a piece of art.
The Old Wood Co. was born in the
fall of 2007 out of a desire to craft
high-quality furnishings using the
finest reclaimed wood available.
I was amazed and excited to find
the creative talent that surrounds us
in the mountains of Western North
Carolina.
BARN
All of these mountain craftsmen and
women were inspired by different
ideas, but several common themes
remain constant: quality and intense
focus in his or her craft. It has been
an absolute dream to be inspired
and work so closely with some of our
areas’ most talented artists. Whether
in textiles, pottery, wood, metal,
glass, or paint, these talented artists
challenge me to think about unique
ways to incorporate new ideas into
our product line.
ORDERING IS EASY. SHIPS RIGHT TO YOUR DOOR.
www.theoldwoodco.com
It is with great pride that we
continue to collaborate with these
local artisans in a way that not only
advances our designs, but also
helps them realize their dream of
fulfilling their life calling. These
strong ties to collaboration and
partnership remain the cornerstones
of our symbiotic relationship with
both the artists we work with and
you, the consumer, interior designer,
the retailer, the restaurateur.
Let us help you in developing your
unique space. Allow us into your
home and workplace to help make
your design vision a reality.

dimension or shape – round,
square, rectangle, oval, etc.
Is all of your wood

we can offer any of our designs

cherry, maple, cypress, or even
exotic woods. Please contact us for
requests.
Where are you located?
danish oil finish maintenance
Periodically buff with a lint-free cloth to renew the shine. The more it’s
buffed, the better it looks. Spills can be cleaned up with a damp cloth of
distilled water or with a one-to-one vinegar and distilled water solution.
Buff dry after wiping. Always wipe with the grain of the wood to prevent
noticeable streaks. A coat of oil should be applied at least once a year. FDAapproved Danish oil can be purchased through The Old Wood Co.
wax finish maintenance
Periodically buff with a lint-free cloth to renew the shine. The more it’s buffed,
the better it looks. When needed, apply a very thin coat of wax and then
buff with a soft, lint-free cloth. Always remember to wipe with the grain of
the wood to prevent noticeable streaks. To remove drink rings, use a very
small amount wax applied to a piece of fine, synthetic steel wool. Rub lightly
with the grain. Allow the wax to dry for 5–10 minutes. Remove the wax in the
direction of the grain with a clean, lint-free cloth. Paste wax can be purchased
through The Old Wood Co. or at most fine antique stores.
We are located in the River Arts
District in Asheville, NC.
is the woodshop open
to the public?
We are open to the public
Monday–Friday,
7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,
by appointment only.
How far in advance
should I place an order?
Our typical lead-time is 8–12
weeks, depending on our current
production cycle.
Due to the nature of our reclaimed lumber, knots, nail
and worm holes, multiple gain patterns, finish variances
(including those within a single piece or between two
or more pieces) and other natural characteristics are
to be expected and add character to the pieces. Due
to the unique nature of our wood finishes, actual wood
samples, website photos, and brochure photos will vary
slightly from the actual finish that is received. Due to the
live edge treatment on some designs, table depths may
vary within one to two inches.
warranty information
Metal bases are warranted against manufacturing
defects for (1) one year from the invoice date. Wood tops
and parts are warranted against manufacturing defects
for a period of (1) one year from the invoice date. This
warranty is valid under normal use under the conditions
for which it was intended. Due to the nature of the wood,
joints may shift or move over time. At our discretion, The
Old Wood Co., will repair or replace items received that
we deem defective.
shipping damages
Each shipment should be inspected immediately upon
receipt. DO NOT ACCEPT the shipment without recording
any damage, including damaged packaging materials, on
the freight bill from the carrier. Shipping damages are the
responsibility of the carrier and not The Old Wood Co.
The customer is responsible for filing any freight claim.
If you find concealed or evident shipping or handling
