V110 – Wines
Straight from the cellar of Frank Keery:
1. A 2007 Zinfandel ‚Abbondanza‛ with grapes from the Grist Vineyard in the California
area called Dry Creek Valley. Frank had this wine specially made to honor his
grandmother. It is an unusual Zinfandel wine in that during the fermentation process,
the yeast kept dying off. Finally after the third try with some very special imported
yeast, the wine finally fermented properly. Frank and his wife Barb met with the
winemaker and designed the many choices of processing steps. The resultant wine is
more like a fruity cabernet than a Zinfandel. It is truly an experience to drink. It should
be drunk now as it is at its peak. There is a little story about his grandmother on the
label with a picture of her making ravioli. Please let this wine sit for a couple of hours
after opening and before drinking. It has a slight sediment which is quite normal for a
wine of this age.
2. Chateau de la Gardine, 1998 is a French Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine from the Rhone
River Valley. It is one of his favorite wine types. Great with meats, wild game, etc. 1998
was one of the best years for this type wine in decades. Although the wine is already 15
years old, it will continue to improve until around 2020 BUT only when stored at wine
cellar temperatures. It is wonderful to drink now. This wine should be opened at least
two hours before drinking. Decanting is always good to do as well. Medium sediment.
3. Green Point Shiraz 2002 from the Victoria wine region of Australia. This is a very big
wine with a lot of full body high in alcohol content but still with a very smooth finish. It
should be drunk now with food that can stand up to a big wine like meat, pasta, etc.
This wine should be opened a couple of hours before drinking. Medium sediment.
You would have a hard time finding these wines in a wine store because of their age.
Obviously, his grandmother’s wine can’t be bought anywhere.
