President’s Message
by Bob Foster
Official Notice! Equestrian Trail Inc.’s (ETI) 67th Annual Horse Show and
Convention is just around the corner! It will be held in Burbank at the Los
Angeles Equestrian Center (LAEC). And it will be held one month earlier on
June 26, 27, and 28.
This is one the largest selection of equine events in Southern California.
Starting on Friday morning, there will be Western Rail, Trail, Hunters over
Fences, and Jumpers. For Friday evening events, there will be Reining classes
as well as Jack Pot Reining. Also, there will be a chili cook off (applications
still being accepted) and Silent Auction.
Saturday will start out with Western Rail, English Flat, Western Trail, as well
as English and Western Dressage. Saturday evening will offer Carriage
Driving classes.
Sunday will start out with English Flat, Hunters over Fences, and Jumpers.
We have high point awards for all age divisions and in all three disciplines, as well as high point carriage driver
and high point for Western and English Dressage. We also have saddles as awards for English Flat Champion,
Hunter/Jumper Champion and Western Champion.
ETI’s Invitational Trail Trials will be Saturday, June 14, and will be starting out of Stetson Ranch in Sylmar. There
will be two categories. One for qualified riders in Open, Novice and Junior, and the other category for any nonqualified riders.
ETI will also be sponsoring a State Final and regular Gymkhana Show on June 20. This event will be held at
Gibson Ranch in Sunland.

Registration Now Open for the AHC's 2015 Annual Meeting and
National Issues Forum
Registration is now open for the American Horse Council's 2015 Annual Meeting and National Issues Forum. You
may register online here, or registration forms are also available online through the AHC website in the Events
section, and can be filled out and sent in via email to [email protected] , via regular mail to 1616 H Street
NW, 7th Floor, Washington, DC 20006, or via fax to 202-296-1970.
The theme for this year's National Issues Forum, sponsored by Luitpold Animal Health, is "Protecting and
Promoting the Horse." The issues that the horse industry has faced over the last decade have changed, but
there are several consistent challenges that include federal regulatory challenges, attracting newcomers to
horses and equine activities, maintaining equine activities that we enjoy, and welfare initiatives to protect our
horses. But as with any challenges, they also create opportunities, and this year's Forum will focus on how the
industry is dealing with them.
Also being highlighted during the Issues Forum will be the AHC's Time to Ride program and its $100,000 Horse
Challenge, and the Unwanted Horse Coalition, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary and is planning a special
update on its current activities and initiatives over the last decade.
This year's National Issues Forum will be held on Tuesday, June 16th, here in Washington, DC during the AHC's
annual meeting, which is taking place from June 14th-16th at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill.
If you have any questions about the meeting itself or registering, please contact Ashley Furst at afurst@
horsecouncil.org or 202-296-4031.

Future Changes on BLM Lands
Written by Ken Lair, president of High Desert Trail Riders;
Submitted by Elaine Macdonald
Ken Lair and Jackie Lindgren attended the Bureau of
Land Management /West Mojave Route Network Project
(aka WMRNP; or WEMO) public meeting in Yucca Valley
on Wednesday, April 15. This Future Lands report is
the result of their educated opinion based on review
of the BLM literature and presentations. Inquiries
or questions can be addressed to Ken by email at
[email protected].
This project addresses, in summary, the new proposed
routing and access control of public roads and camping
facilities on BLM lands, particularly for motorized
recreational use. Concern has been voiced by several
organizations (e.g., various rock hounding and trail
riding groups), expressing fear that many of their
familiar and well-used routes and sites may be closed
under the draft plan and EIS.
The meeting was structured to provide a brief overview
of the BLM review process for their Draft Plan and Draft

Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement
(DSEIS) regarding the West Mojave Route Network
Project. Oral public input was conducted with individual
BLM staff and their contractor representatives (who are
helping BLM with the review process) after a general
presentation. Individual or organizational comments
on the proposed BLM route network plan can be
submitted in writing, or electronically on the BLM web
site. Comments must be received by June 4, 2015.
A CD is also available from the BLM, detailing their plans
for route networks (including specific maps) under all
the EIS alternatives reviewed. This can be requested
from their web site at:
www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/cdd/west_mojave__wemo.
html
In summary, the following are what Jackie and I took
from the discussion and written handout materials, as
we understand it:
1. Under the BLM’s preferred alternative (No. 3),
Volume 15, Issue 3
Future Changes on BLM Lands
there actually will be an increase in available
routes provided for motorized public recreational
access.
2. The BLM is closing several routes across the whole
Western Mojave Desert area in sensitive wildlife
habitat (denoted as DWHM routes). However,
other routes to be designated for public use will
be opened, resulting in a net increase in total
miles of public access available to the public.
3. One of their prime objectives is to contain/curtail
public roadside camping outside of designated
camping facilities. They plan to accomplish this
by narrowing the permissible camping zone
adjacent to BLM roadsides to within 100’ of the
road centerline in non-DWHM routes, and within
50’ of the road centerline on DWHM routes.
4. Another prime objective is to decommission
certain grazing allotments that have been in
non-use for several years, devoting that forage
to wildlife use.
5. No current access to, or facilities for, horse
camping and trail ride staging are planned for
closure under the preferred alternative. This
was confirmed via specific question to BLM staff
and their contractor.
6. The preferred alternative may be subject to
requirements in the final, approved version of
the DRECP. However, even if modified by the
DRECP, BLM still anticipates no closure or moving
of horse camping facilities.
Submitted by Elaine Macdonald
as currently designed would remain as-is, with
dedicated staging areas.
One thing the BLM did confirm with us personally, in
response to our questions, was that they NEED and
WANT to hear from horse organizations as to preferred
locations of horse camp facilities and horse riding trails
on the approved public routes (i.e., maintenance and
modification of existing facilities, as well as construction
of new facilities). This is our opportunity as a club and
a unified voice to provide needed and worthwhile input
that may actually improve BLM facilities and routes
available to us over time.
At present, I am aware of only two horse camping
facilities on BLM – Owl Canyon (Rainbow Basin), and
Black Canyon (Hole-in-the-Wall). I’m sure that many
of you are aware of others that may potentially be used
or desired for future use. If you have other candidate
BLM sites that you wish maintained or new sites
considered for creation, please submit comments to
the BLM. Contact points for submission of comments
are as follows: [email protected]
or mail to:
Bureau of Land Management, California Desert District
Attn: WMRNP Plan Amendment
22835 Calle San Juan de Los Lagos

7. Consolidation of campsites into common staging
areas for all recreational uses was not discussed
or mentioned in handouts. However, BLM staff
indicated that existing horse camping facilities

their own variations.
Unlike most cone courses, Driving Derby has a
set cone gate dimension that does not change by
equine or vehicle size. The course design allows
the smaller equines a speedier run through the
hazards while the larger distances between cone
gates give the advantage to larger horses.
The hidden plus of the derby is the ability to
hold it in a limited space setting. The average
driven dressage court offers enough room for a
challenging course. This helps keep venue costs
down and can be run with less volunteer staff.

The ETI event drew a broad section of drivers,
fourteen in all. Every combination of equine size
and driver levels were represented. All were able
to safely navigate the course, although some drew
penalties along the way.
Ribbons were given through 3rd place. (Times
have been combined from the two runs and then

We had a great day for our event. Most of the day was
overcast with some sunshine. It never got hot, but if the
wind came up it could feel quite cool on the mesa.
By Charlotte Brodie
I immediately had a challenge greeting me when I arrived
at 7am Sunday: there was a car parked blocking the entire
access through the front gate. Fortunately, the back gate
was accessible. After getting in, I called Keltie for some
assistance with the front gate.
across the Highlands and up the hill and to the Wildflower
Trail. From there, riders went down the Valley of the Dolls
trail and Saugus Road to the low rock wall, then onto the
Twin Lakes upper roads, and down the switch-back trail to
the eucalyptus grove for a grand tour. Then, they went up
and around the Chatsworth Trails hill, across the meadow
(avoiding the scary bridge), and back through Devils and up
to the mesa. Without stopping for the obstacles, it was a
two hour ride.
I was grateful to have Jerome Ruzicka (broken toe and all),
Cindy & Mickey Strauss, and Bill UpdeGraff helping to set
things up. Jerome went home and brought back his Jeep
and a long chain to move the rock that somewhat blocked
the back entrance. He and Bill moved the large rock out of
the way so rigs could easily come in the back way until the
front was cleared.
We thought we’d try something new this year. A friend,
Ryan Carpenter, offered to take a movie of our event with
his drone. It seemed to be a good idea…getting pictures
of our eventers and the open space that will soon be gone.
However, it turned out the horses on the ride were not liking
the “good idea” with the drone. It got scraped soon after it
started, and Ryan just took pictures.
Susan Grossman and Diane Brewer arrived next to take over
the entry booth duties; Mickey started handling all the poker
business and Jerome became busy with his parking duties.
I want to make sure that everyone that helped me in any way
to make this event a success knows how much I appreciate
their time and efforts. Thank you all so very, very much.
The trail flaggers, Emily Souza and Ashley Shrader, rode
up ready to pick up the bags of flagging to mark the trail.
Several competitors remarked that this was the best marked
trail trials.
After all the paperwork was done, our Trail Trial winners are:
When Keltie and her sister later arrived with their horses
(they were competing as well), she proceeded to find the
car’s owner and have it moved.
The Road Kill Café came to feed our workers and competitors.
It was run by Patty Hug, Jim Renzie, Patty Munson and Walt
Conner. Food was good!
Our starter, Babe Coverston, arrived about 8:30 with his
wife, Helene, the #1 Tack Check judge ready to take their
positions. I took care of making sure all the judges received
their score sheets, signs and props before sending them out
on the trail: #2 Bill UpdeGraff/Map; #3 Cindy Strauss/Can

time as that was all the judges I could round up.

Sunshine, blue skies, and cool breezes greeted the ETI
Corral 2 Western Schooling Show held at Rose Bowl Riders
on Sunday, April 26. We could not have asked for a lovelier
day or for happier riders and spectators. The day began
with a beautiful mounted flag ceremony and the playing of
the National Anthem. There were Western Pleasure and
Equitation classes for various age groups as well as trail
classes featuring new obstacles and challenges. Participants
included visiting riders from San Dimas and Glendora as well
as many of Julie Unamuno’s Arroyo Canyon students, both
junior riders and adults. New and longtime Rose Bowl Riders
boarders and Corral 2 members also took part, including Gail
Young on Megan, Nancy Rose on Sue’s Song, Ann Regan
on Jango, and Phyllis Ginter’s new horse Mati (ridden by
Julie). The show’s culmination was the costume class, which
ended in a tie between a stylish mounted Minnie Mouse,
and Thing One and Thing Two (rider and horse respectively,
both wearing wigs).
The standout performers were
unquestionably Eric Stewart and his mule Thumper who
placed high in every class they entered and were audience
favorites (Eric was overheard to say, “Take that, short ears!”
while grinning and brandishing a first-place trophy). There
was good riding and good fun, and a fabulous time was had
by all – including the organizers, who hope you’ll come to

Marshall Canyon MAU’s re-certification is going well.
Congratulations to Walt Coursey, Cherri Monson and Julie
Sandona for passing the County’s first re-certification test!
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to set up
the arena at Bonelli Park for testing. The judges, who have
already been tested themselves, were very patient with us
and our horses. More of our members will be attending the
next re-certification test.
Two of our recruits, Jeanne Martin and Arlene Hamblen,
attended the Whittier Narrows Obstacle training in April,
which was very useful towards hours for training and for
certification, and they also attended Walnut Creek training
on May 9, which they stated was very well planned and
informative.
Darlene McGrady will be attending the
Antonovich Ride on May 31 at Ft. Tejon.
Marshall Canyon MAU is actively looking for new members.
We train at the Fred Palmer Equestrian Center in Marshall
Canyon, plus we have many beautiful, tree-covered trails to
ride. For information, please contact Darlene McGrady at

forgets to smile and be friendly. When one of our riders could
not use their horse, Ashlynn offered to share her horse for
last two competitions of the season…even though the other
rider was in her division and could have cost her points. In
her spare time, Ashlynn likes to go on rock collecting trips
with her dad, hang out with her mom in Big Bear and play
with her younger siblings. Ashlynn rode clean, kept a good
attitude and ended up winning it all. We are so proud of her

Oak Creek Corral’s 2014 Race for the Saddle
Every season Corral 21’s Gymkhana Series hosts the Race
for the Saddle where participants in every division have the
opportunity to win the golden prize of a beautiful western
barrel saddle. Last year our corral had a huge turnout of
competitors. With the extra competition, the Race for the
Saddle was on. The season was a tight race with several
competitors possibly able to win the saddle.
This year’s award banquet was the biggest surprise yet.
Competitors were happily surprised to receive amazing
tack awards to use in future races: beautiful hand painted
headstalls, breast collars, bronc halters and pads, were just
some of the prizes. Everyone waited on the edge of their
seat to see, wondering who won the largest prize of the
season. After what seemed like a long story, recanting the
year’s event, Tracy Boldroff finally announced that this year
we had an exact tie. Not only one, but two competitors won
saddles. Ashlynn and Maddie were called to the front to
accept their beautiful and well deserved saddles.
Ashlynn, happy
to have earned
such a grand
prize.

great

the
season.

the season, she

her horse Red.
Halfway through
the season, Red
and Maddie were
doing some light
training,
when
Red toppled over,
on Maddie’s leg,
causing her to
fracture her leg
in three places.
Red was unable
to finish the season, and we were not sure about Maddie.
We had a month break from our series for the ETI National
Convention, giving Maddie a little time to heal. In the
meantime, another horse, a pretty Paint named Kahlua,
was in training. When Maddie was ready to ride again, she
considered taking Kahlua on, even though she was young
and green. After a lot of work and patience, she and Kahlua
did pretty great together…Great enough to win the saddle.
When Maddie is not at the ranch, she is probably at the
dance studio, working on her archery skills, and getting
great grades; she is a very accomplished student. Maddie
overcame some huge odds last year, but she stayed strong,
kept a great attitude, and came out on top.
Congratulations, girls! We know there are many more
wonderful seasons under your belt.

My family and I wish to thank everyone that attended the
Memorial Service for John. I have so many people to thank
for helping me put this event together. First of all, Bill and
Tina Pollard, who were extremely instrumental in helping
me put the service together. Our lovely editor, Mary Timmer,
created John’s Memorial Pamphlet. Mary did a splendid job!
Mary also put the slide show together along with music from
Willie Nelson. Again, Mary did a superb job! Rachel Swain,
Kathleen Ungamrung and Tom Smart also helped on the slide
show. Longtime friend and colleague of John, Yoshio Muki
was the Master of Ceremonies. Yosh was very eloquent in
his presentation. Bill Pollard was instrumental in bringing
in the Navy Honors Detail who proudly presented me with
the flag! I was extremely honored to accept the flag and
thinking of all our soldiers who gave their life for our country.
My family provided the lovely flowers for the Memorial Table.
The Pollards provided the delicious desserts. Rachel Swain
made the parking memorial poster. Walt Connor helped set
up, serve food along with Tina Pollard and Susie Ellenger
provided the coffee. Dwayne Gipson and Craig Tognazzini
served the beverages. Thanks again for all your help! You
are truly wonderful friends, and I thank you from the bottom
of my heart.

Our first C22 Pioneertown weekend ride was a blast! Guests
from Norco, Acton, Leona Valley, Arizona and Minnesota
joined us for a weekend of great food and riding. The
weekend started out with a fabulous potluck on Friday
evening highlighting some delicious dishes like Dutch oven
chili (Dan Cotten), succotash (Billie McGuire), flautas deluxe
(Lisa Sommerhauser) spaghetti casserole, fruit salad, and of
course the staple, KFC!
On Saturday, 24 riders rode out onto the Sawtooth Trail
where the weather was perfect, and the wildflowers were
still in bloom. To top it off, we took a group photo in town
that was appropriately photo bombed by Sara and her mule
“Jack”…thanks, Sara! The weekend ended with a short ride
on Sunday followed up by lunch at Pappy & Harriet’s. While
simple details like forgetting to make dinner reservations or
squeezing as many people as possible into a 15 person table
at dinner (sorry for all of you who could not fit), the weekend
was a terrific success that we hope to repeat in the coming
years. A special thank you to Paul and Tiff for leading the
ride.

What a beautiful day for a ride! I would like to thank all
21 riders who joined us at Vasquez Rocks on Sunday, April
12, 2015. Thank you to our Trail Boss Kimberly Dwight,
President of Corral 138, who stepped up at the last minute
to lead our ride.
I would like to thank Alan Johnson, Captain of the San
Fernando Rangers and Cindy Gates who rode drag and made
sure we all got back to the staging area and not left on the
trail somewhere! Thank goodness the ride was uneventful,
and everyone enjoyed the great weather and no horse or
mule drama. There were still a few wildflowers and cactus in
bloom which made for nice scenery along with the gorgeous
natural surroundings. New member Stacy Potruzuski joined
Corral 22 at this ride. Welcome, Stacy! After the ride some
of us went to Maria Bonita for lunch and met other Corral
members who did not ride.

The Smallest Foe
By Heather Faucher
My seventy-six year old mother recently visited me from the
right coast. She’s still a fit, active woman but has lately been
feeling a bit of her age with some significant back issues. I
was eager to show her my new horses, but I wasn’t sure she
would be up for a ride. She surprised me by sitting through
a two-hour tour of the spectacular spring wildflowers along
the Monte Nido trails aboard my gentle mare, Cloud. Wanting
to ride again before going back home, we decided to tackle
the lower Backbone.
Upcoming Events:
June 25-28: ETI National Convention / Los Angeles
Equestrian Center. Please see the current ETI magazine for
more information. Volunteers are needed for the event!
June 27: Inspiration Point Ride / Wrightwood. Portions of
this ride take place on the PCT. There are lots of single track
trails with moderate to heavy climbing. There is also one
bridge crossing and two small water crossings. Your horse
should be in shape for this ride. No water is available for
horses on the trail. We will stop for a picnic lunch. (See flyer
on page 12 of our current newsletter for further information.)
July 12: Golf Course Ride / Lake View Terrace: More
information will be provided next month.

Happy Trails!
Ivy Murillo
Vice President, Scribe and Area 6 Director
We were enjoying a nice slow walk under the shady trees of
the Backbone trail and had reached about the half-way point,
with Mom behind me on Cloud, when suddenly and rather
violently, Cloud surged forward into my mount, Shanti. The
trail at this point was narrow with no room for Cloud to move
past, but she seemed intent on climbing over Shanti and me!
Mom was screaming “whoa, whoa!!” I stuck out my arm to
keep Cloud back, knowing that if she got past me, my Mom
would be on the ride of her life! In her frustration at being
blocked, Cloud went wide, scraping my Mom off against the
prickly branches, and she fell to the rocky ground! Shanti,
Cloud and I continued forward for a while until I was able to
get control of the horses.
Cloud had stepped on and broken her reins, but happily I
always have an extra set in my saddle bag and was able to
get my mother back on board for the ride home. What on
earth had caused this huge kerfuffle? Cloud had a couple
of welts on her hind end that told the story - yellow jackets,
or ground wasps, the smallest foe! Which reminded me of
my own nearly disastrous experience with these little devils.
In Maryland, ground wasp season is in the fall, when they
become aggressive right before the adults die for

the winter. The young will emerge from the nests

underground or in rotten logs in the spring to begin the life
cycle again. On one crisp fall day, I was riding with several
friends, one of whom was Sally, a tough girl raised at the
Pimlico race track exercising horses for the trainers. Sally
was normally a very horse-wise woman with no reservations
about informing others of their imperfections in all things
equestrian. But on this day, she would prove to be the one
to make a major mistake, one that would land squarely on
my head (and much of my torso.)
To borrow a lovely expression from the Tour de France,
Sally needed to take a “natural break” a couple of hours
into that fall ride, and even though she was riding a small
Arabian that couldn’t have been taller than fourteen hands,
she insisted on going off the trail to remount from a log. A
rotten log. The rest of us were up the trail a bit preparing
to cross the river at the deepest and trickiest crossing, called
“the rapids.”
As the first of our group entered the river, we heard Sally yell
Bee “wasps!” in a panicked voice. Before I knew it, a swarm
of yellow jackets had chased me down and was stinging
me repeatedly, several from inside my shirt! At this point I
was belly-deep in the river, with Sally behind me screaming
for me to hurry across. I had ripped off my shirt and was
flapping it all around me to ward of the attacking bees,
which caused Sally to yell “Stop it, you’re going to spook
my horse!” I yelled back in pain, “I don’t care!” thinking to
myself that she was the idiot that had to go off-trail during
wasp season, so she might deserve a swim in the cold water!
We all got safely across the river and kept moving quickly
away from the wasps’ hive. But soon I noticed that my
hands and toes were tingling oddly, I felt very dizzy, and
my vision was becoming uncomfortably bright! My blood
pressure was dropping dramatically as the venom from what
would turn out to be seventeen stings worked its way into
my system.
I called out that I wanted to get off, but my wise friend
Sandy, who was also my doctor, said “Stay on! If you get off
we may not be able to get you back on!” She instructed me
to tuck in behind her and she would lead me out. Meanwhile,
she was on the phone with 911 getting an ambulance to
meet us at the closest road. I held on to my horse neck and
followed close behind Sandy, and in this way we made it out
of the forest. When the paramedics took off my boots, we
saw that my hands and feet were blue from the blood being
sucked back into my core organs! They hooked me up to
an i.v. of Benedryl and steroids and got me to the hospital.
I was fine, but puffy for a while, then very itchy for days as
the stings ran their course. Somehow none of the horses or
other riders were stung! But we all learned the important
lesson : Do NOT go off the trail during ground wasp season!
30
[Editor’s note: As we who ride and hike the local trails,
always watch out for those bright yellow and black little bee/
wasp monsters. They could just as suddenly make their nest
IN the trail, as we personally experienced last season.]

News of Griffith Park and its trails.
In my May column, I mentioned that there is to be a
promised equestrian and hiking trail around the perimeter of
the Headworks project. What I failed to mention is that this
trail will not be in place until after the second huge tank is
completed sometime after 2018, most likely.
The plans for the trail are not finalized at this time. There
are various ideas for the trail. One idea was for the Army
Corp of Engineers to divert a bit of the LA River onto the
property to create a stream and ponds.
The 134 freeway follows the ancient path of the Pacific
flyway, a migration corridor for hundreds of birds. It was
thought that if there were some wetlands, it would help
restore the flyway to a more vital role for birds.
This is only one possible plan. The drought might play a big
Volume 15, Issue 3
Corral 57
role in whether a wetlands could be created.

The traditional parking spot for equestrians hauling trailers
in to ride is now open again. This is directly across from
the Live Steamers and access to the dirt trails in the park.
Also, the additional parking spot for visiting trailers is across
from Martinez Arena. So there are now two good places to
choose from for visitors to the park.
*******************
At the north entrance to Tunnel 7, (many people think of it
as the first tunnel since it is the first one equestrians ride
through after crossing the Mariposa Bridge heading into the
Park), there has been a ruptured pipe belonging to Cal Trans.
The pipe first broke in March and flooded the entrance to the
tunnel. A quick repair was done. However, I got a call from
Park Maintenance that Cal Trans will be returning to the spot
where the broken pipe was to make a permanent fix. I
believe that they are cutting the pipe back away from the
mouth of the Tunnel 7 and burying it deeper into the ground
where I can’t be broken again.
During construction, the north entrance of Tunnel 7 will be
closed to through traffic. Riders will be directed to Tunnel
6, in order to access the park trails. Tunnel 6 is reached by
turning left upon exiting the bridge onto the posted bridle
trail, heading toward the Victory Bridge, riding along the
broken paved road to Tunnel 6. You enter the Tunnel way
before Victory Bridge. Riders will exit from the Tunnel 6 just
east of Travel Town where you can access the trails for riding
or hiking. You will have to return in the same way.
The repairs shouldn’t take more than a day or so to
accomplish. I don’t have a date for this repair work as it will
be decided by Cal Trans according to their work schedule.
Signage will be posted at the south end of the bridge to
advise riders and hikers.

13 riders gathered in Acton for our Mountain trail ride on
April 11. It was a perfect Spring day for a ride, and we

hard. “Grunt” hill was the first long, steep hill, and then we
did a lot of short ups and downs. All horses and riders did
fine, and at the half way point, we voted to add another hill
to make the ride longer. Following the ride, we relaxed at

it’s really interesting to see the shifts taking place in class
participation, popularity and age breaks!
Larger turnout is trending. For instance, the April show had
almost 100 entries, and May’s show was close with about 80!
Each one was bigger than any show last year!
Saving Time & Money is trending. We are thrilled to see so
many exhibitors taking advantage of the Pre-Entry option!
Usually we can expect about 50% in pre-entries, but you
all seem to be getting the hang of it now! This time, we
got 70%! Pre-entering streamlines the whole process. It’s
really a win-win for everybody - exhibitors can save a chunk
of ca$h, and the show office staff saves time, which is always
a good thing!
19 & Over ATR Classes are trending. In the Western riding
classes, this age break has grown dramatically. Baby
boomers are riding again, and riders who have “aged out” of
the junior ranks are still going strong. The mixed E/W Trail
seems to be following suit. (In contrast, there are more
entries in the English 13 & Under and Open riding classes
than the other age breaks.)
Walk/Trot Classes are trending. Ahh, could this be that baby
boomer demographic again? Partly. The popularity of these
Good riding ‘til next time!

We had fabulous weather for the Trail Trial April 26! It had
been windy all week and actually rained the day before.
It just drizzled a little at the arena while we were flagging
Saturday afternoon but other places got a down pour. It
takes a lot of volunteers to put on a Trail Trial; each of the
judges had a helper. Obstacles were:
rail road tie bridge which is permanently in the obstacle
course, the rope gate is permanent, little ditch, “trim the
tree”, tack check, big down and up, the back up, uphill, a
fallen Joshua walk over and the Pony Express. Riders took
a mail bag from a sign saying Tejon Stage and took it to
the Butterfield Stage (sign) and then brought back the mail
from there. We had eight Juniors this year; I think that’s
a record. 30 in novice and 13 open riders. This year we
had a tie for first place in Open with only one point each.
Fortunately, we figured out how to give each of them a blue
ribbon and buckle.

Claudia Roberts
"L" judge program graduate Claudia Roberts is a F.E.I. Competitor and the owner of Pacific
Dressage, LLC located at The Hansen Dam Equestrian Center in Lakeview Terrace. She
promotes the traditional style of teaching classical dressage and has incorporated western
dressage into her repertoire of disciplines. "The two go hand in hand", in her opinion. Claudia
has earned her U.S.D.F. Bronze and Silver medals and competes as often as her time allows.
Her background in psychology, having earned a Masters degree in Psychology, gives her a
unique approach to riders with fear issues and a lack of confidence. Please visit her website

Special Olympics at Convention!
At Convention 2015, you will have the opportunity to showcase your horse for use in the 2015 Special Olympics
Equestrian Games. If you have already contacted this organization and been approved, you can let them see
what your horse is capable of. Or if you would like to loan your horse for the special Olympics, this is a perfect
time to allow for them to be approved.
Two people from The Ride On organization will be at Convention on June 27 from 10am - 2pm.
All are welcome to show at convention to give your horse an opportunity to see the entire facility and to become
familiar with everything there.
Help support a great cause and fulfill dreams of many!

Volunteers Needed
Convention is looking for a few new volunteers.
There are many areas where your help would be put to GREAT USE to support ETI.
Don’t worry if you think you don’t have enough experience. We offer “on the job
training” in many areas – Horse show, Trail Trials, Gymkhana, Driving, Dressage, etc.
It’s a great opportunity to meet fellow ETI members from other Corrals and areas and to
have a good time doing good for the future of horses and people who have or want to have horses in the future.
Some of the areas that need helpers are: Class entries, Arena workers, Gatekeepers, Ring Stewards, Runners for
the Office and Arenas, Trail Trial Judges, Trail Trial Entry Booth, Announcers and Assistants, Award and Ribbon
Presentation, Security, High-Point Tallying, and More.
This is the largest fundraiser for ETI and your volunteering will help support the many goals that ETI has to help
maintain trails, preserve horse keeping rights and trail access and promote our Equestrian Lifestyle. A little time
will go along way, after all this is your organization too!
To volunteer, contact the ETI Office at (818) 698-6200 or email at [email protected].
We are again asking each Corral to donate something for the Jr. Ambassador’s Silent Auction which
will take place at Friday’s Chili Cook Off. Please drop off items at the LAEC Horse Show Office by
2:00pm on Friday, June 26. Contact Michelle at the ETI office for more information.

Liability Release.
In consideration for Equestrian Trials, Inc. (“ETI”) allowing me or my child to voluntarily
participate in its activities, and LAEC Incorporated allowing me or my child to participate in
events on its grounds, I agree as follows:
3.
A.
This agreement, waiver and release applies to ETI and to ETI’s affiliated Corrals, committees, employees, predecessors, successors, attorneys, insurers, members and volunteers who are working in the course and scope of their duties on behalf of ETI, including
its affiliated Corrals, at the time of occurrence of any act or omission which is later alleged to be a cause or contribution to a claim for injury, damages or death, and also applies to LAEC Incorporated, its agents and employees (collectively “Released Parties”);
B.
I forever release, hold harmless and indemnify Released Parties from liability for any and
all claims, demands, causes of action, damages, injuries or death to me, my minor children, my horse and my property, and legal liability of every nature, including the negligent acts or omissions of any Released Parties, whether known or unknown, anticipated
or unanticipated, direct or indirect, arising out of participation in the past, present or
future ETI activities (including equestrian activities, such as the riding, use of, or being
near, horses, whether at an arena, stable or on a trail ride in association with ETI) and I
assume all risks of injury or death as set forth in this release;
C.
I shall not bring any lawsuit, action or proceeding against any Released Parties, even if
they engage in negligent conduct; and
D.
I make this agreement, waiver and release for and on behalf of myself, my spouse, my
child and/or ward, heirs, administrators, successors, representatives and assigns.
Activity Risk.
I understand that some ETI activities take place in isolated or wilderness areas over rough
terrain, and/or trails of unknown condition, and others take place on land or in facilities
owned and managed by others from whom such land or facilities are borrowed or rented. I
understand that the organizers, workers and members involved in ETI activities are not professionals in the horse industry, or in the planning or conducting of trips or camping events,
or in other areas of expertise involved in ETI activities. I also understand that horseback
riding is a rugged adventure, recreational sport activity. I am aware that there are numerous
obvious and non-obvious inherent risks of serious injury or death, or property damage, to me
or my horse, which are always present in ETI activities, on or near horses. I understand that
pregnant women are specifically advised not to ride horses. I understand that ETI is a nonprofit club of private individuals who have come together to support and enjoy recreationoriented activities.

4.
Nature of Horse.
I understand that no horse is completely safe, and the Released Parties make no representations or guarantees regarding the safety, training or suitability of any horse. Horses are 5 to
15 times larger, 20 to 40 times more powerful, and 3 to 4 times faster than a human. If I fall
from a horse to the ground, it will generally be at a distance of 4 to 6 feet, and the impact will
injure me. A horse may divert from its training and act according to its natural survival instincts and may abruptly change directions or speed, trip, slip, fall, stop short, shift its weight,
buck, rear, kick, bite, spook, or run from what it perceives to be danger if it is frightened or
provoked, or for no reason whatsoever.
5.
Conditions of Nature & Locations.
I agree that the Released Parties are not responsible for acts, occurrences or elements of nature or a particular location that can injure a person or scare a horse, cause it to trip, fall or
react in some other manner. These elements include thunder, lightening, rain, wind, wild and
domestic animals, insects, other people and horses, and reptiles which may walk, run, fly near,
bite and/or sting a horse or person, irregular footing on groomed or wild land which is subject
to constant change according to weather, temperature, natural and man-made objects. The
Released Parties have not inspected, and make no representations or warranties concerning
the safety or condition of, any trail, camping site, arena and/or other location of ETI events.
6.
Helmet Warning.
I am aware that protective head gear which meets or exceeds the quality standards of the SEI
certified and ASTM standard F1163 equestrian helmet, should be purchased and worn by me
and/or my child while riding and being near horses, and the wearing of such helmet may reduce
the severity of some head injuries and may prevent my serious injury or death as a result of
a fall or other occurrence. If I or my minor child do not wear a helmet, it is because we so
choose.
I HAVE READ, UNDERSTOOD AND VOLUNTARILY AGREE TO THIS TWO-PAGE WAIVER & RELEASE.
I FURTHER AGREE THAT NO ORAL STATEMENTS, REPRESENTATIONS OR INDUCEMENTS APART
FROM THIS WRITTEN AGREEMENT HAVE BEEN MADE TO ME TO OBTAIN MY CONSENT.

Volunteer Class
NOTICE TO ALL VOLUNTEERS
Ever wish you could be on the stage instead of always working behind it? As
a way of saying thank you to our Convention volunteers
for all your hard work, we have developed a class that is
strictly made for people that have volunteered in some
aspect at Convention and want their chance to play. You
don’t need to have a horse there; we’ll find someone that
you can borrow a horse from. The class is either English
or Western, casual attire, and walk/trot only. If you have
any questions, call Michelle at (818) 698-6200.

Why You Should Volunteer in 2015
The 2014 ETI National Convention is just a memory. But
what a memory! Memories can be wonderful, and I have
some great remembrances from last year’s Convention.
The 2015 National Convention is scheduled for June 2528. I thought the time is right to reflect, share and perhaps
encourage for 2015.
For years I have seen the program line up for Convention,
the call for volunteers and ultimately, any pictorial keepsakes
taken during events. I got my courage up and volunteered
last year. Gosh…I was so glad I volunteered, but I was very
tired!
The thoughts that go through your head run the gamut
of…”Do I know enough?” to “Am I dressed appropriately”?
Relax…volunteers are valued, and there is no intent to ask
you to do something unsafe, or to put you into an unsafe
situation. So ask yourself, “What are you interested in?”
Perhaps trail obstacles, showing either Western or English,
training for showing, maybe driving. Or you just like to be
around horse people. Your help may be needed just to
monitor gates. What better way to scope out what critical
skill sets for success are than to learn from a credentialed
judge or from some experienced “old timers”.
Jobs and tasking range from gate management to keeping

the arena set up consistently for each entrant to lining up
entrants, to scribing for the judge and many more jobs,
including logistics and communications with the front office.
Last year, I scribed for a judge in a few Western categories.
Wow, what a day; I was exhausted from learning so much!
Yes, I had been a worker for a variety of horse shows, and
I had even participated in some. But my day was so full
of new knowledge. I want to understand, so I am always
asking questions. As I scribed, the judge shared why he
scored the way he did, what the entrant did or didn’t do that
was important for points (either for or against). I was very
impressed at how he encouraged and uplifted younger and
newer participants. A few words at the end of a class which
might help the entrant understand can be so motivating for
the less experienced entrant; sometimes just encouraging
good posture and a bright attitude.
What a sales job! Yes, I was so pumped up and motivated
that I signed up to help in 2015, that same day I worked.
The organizing staff, the on-site office and the event
workers made the day such a memorable experience. Now
keep in mind that on any given day, there could be five or
more arenas working at one time; there is a lot happening
including those getting ready.
I learned the equestrian community is very supportive of
each other in a few generalized ways:
We are in a major drought!
ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR
FIRES!
THIS SEASON -- When you drive past the Fire Dept Forestry
Unit on Las Virgenes Rd. and notice that the warning sign
says “HIGH FIRE DANGER”, take special notice!!
We are at risk! Our children are at risk! Our
animals are at risk! Our homes are at risk!
Hell’s Bells! The mountains are DRY. BE
PREPARED!!

members can participate in our ETI
High Point Shows. But to be a part
of the National High Point Circuit
you must be an ETI member and
sign up for your classes. You must
sign up by the end of the third show
of the season. If you sign up by this deadline,
your points from the earlier season shows will be
counted towards the year end awards. The new
circuit for 2015 starts on March 1.”
The Junior Ambassador Program is open to

trail dedications, quarterly dinner meetings and
fun events just for the Junior Ambassador Court
such as the retreat! Contact Debbie or any of the
girls who have participated for more info on the

Trail Rider Award Program (TRAP) keeps
computerized logs on how many
hours members are riding. In this
day and age, when trails are giving
way to housing developments, it
is crucial that records be kept on
trail usage. ETI Corrals in all areas
are finding themselves having to defend their
riding areas more and more against encroaching
civilization. On several occasions, TRAP records
have been instrumental in maintaining trail access.
ETI TRAP acknowledges hours in the saddle with
shoulder patches & pins that can be attached almost
anywhere. The fee to join TRAP is only $12.00
(you must maintain current ETI membership);
then the TRAP membership is maintained each
year for only $6.00. You will start by receiving the
TRAP main shoulder patch and your log sheets.
As you achieve the hour goals additional patches
will be sent to you. Carol Elliott is the TRAP chair.

Trail Trials: An ETI Sanctioned Trail Trial consists
of a trail ride, usually averaging between two and
three hours, with trail obstacles
along the way. Obstacles are
natural, or simulate naturally
occurring conditions for the
horse and rider to negotiate.
We now have a DVD from a
clinic demonstrating obstacles and tips to compete
or put on a Trail Trial. It is important to remember
that the people doing the judging at sanctioned Trail
Trial event are volunteers following the rulebook
and are doing thwe best they can. Safety, control,
and common sense are the number one priorities
for all ETI sanctioned Trail Trials. Trail Trials are
open to ETI members and Non-members. There
are three divisions: Juniors for youth 14 years
(as of Jan. 1st) and under; Novice and Open.
