Standard Chartered My Dream Account Presents
150th Anniversary Commemorative Dream Express
Limited Edition Piggy Bank
To Save for Dreams & Cherish Hong Kong People’s Collective Memory
Over 70% of Hong Kong youngsters have savings habit
& save up around 10% of their monthly income
[16 November 2009, Hong Kong] – Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited
(hereinafter named as ‘Standard Chartered’) presented Mickey Mouse Piggy Bank in the
1960’s and Donald Duck Piggy Bank in the 1970’s, both of which are not only classics of the
times but also became part of Hong Kong people’s collective memory. To cherish this
collective memory of Hong Kong people and to encourage savings, Standard Chartered My
Dream Account has cooperated with Hong Kong Disneyland since 2005 and presented
Disney character welcome gifts which are highly popular among both adults and children.
With the number of customers growing at an average rate of 30% each year, the number of
accounts has now exceeded 120,000. This reflects that high interest deposit products with
distinguishing features and distinct market position are well received by the market.
This year, to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Standard Chartered in Hong Kong, Standard
Chartered My Dream Account proudly presents Standard Chartered 150th Anniversary
Commemorative Dream Express Limited Edition Piggy Bank. While sharing the joyful 150th
anniversary celebration with the customers, it is also hoped that this will help Hong Kong
people of various generations to realise their wishes and dreams through savings.
Standard Chartered engaged Nielson, a research company this September to conduct a
survey on savings habits with over 500 Hong Kong young people of 18 to 30 years old. The
results showed that 74% of those interviewed had savings habits, and they saved up on
average 13% of their monthly income. Less than 40% expressed that they would set a
savings goal every month. It is also found in the survey that one in every five among the
interviewee group of age 18 to 25 had their dreams and plans defined, such as pursuing
further study, travel or getting married. The average savings of this group of youngsters
having dreams (goals) was higher than those without dreams by around 21%.
“This is evident that clear and defined dreams and plans are very important motivating forces
for savings. Standard Chartered has always been encouraging customers to actively grow
their wealth in order to realise their dreams. We present Disney character piggy banks that
both adults and children are fond of through My Dream Account. We wish to cherish the
collective memory together with the people of Hong Kong, and at the same time, encourage
savings and make it enjoyable for customers to do so,” remarked Pauline Lai, General
Manager, Consumer Transaction Banking, Standard Chartered.
To enable customers to realise their dreams sooner, from today to 31 March 2010, Standard
Chartered will offer customers who successfully open a My Dream Account a preferential
savings interest rate of 0.15% p.a., which is 15 times that of normal savings accounts.
Existing account holders will enjoy a preferential savings interest rate of 0.2%. In addition,
customers who deposit new funds into Standard Chartered ‘My Dream Account’ or Hong
Kong Dollar Deposits Account * will receive up to HK$4,000 worth of cash coupons.
