Standard Chartered engaged Nielson, a research company this September to conduct a survey on savings habits with over 500 Hong Kong young people of 18 to 30 years old. The results showed that 74% of those interviewed had savings habits, and they saved up on average 13% of their monthly income. Less than 40% expressed that they would set a savings goal every month. It is also found in the survey that one in every five among the interviewee group of age 18 to 25 had their dreams and plans defined, such as pursuing further study, travel or getting married. The average savings of this group of youngsters having dreams (goals) was higher than those without dreams by around 21%. “This is evident that clear and defined dreams and plans are very important motivating forces for savings. Standard Chartered has always been encouraging customers to actively grow their wealth in order to realise their dreams. To enable customers to realise their dreams sooner, from today to 31 March 2010, Standard Chartered will offer customers who successfully open a My Dream Account a preferential savings interest rate of 0.15% p.a., which is 15 times that of normal savings accounts. Existing account holders will enjoy a preferential savings interest rate of 0.2%. In addition, customers who deposit new funds into Standard Chartered ‘My Dream Account’ or Hong Kong Dollar Deposits Account * will receive up to HK$4,000 worth of cash coupons.
