MYROADTOEUGENE
BETH LOCKWOOD
I am not your typical lean and mean long distance runner.
I have had a love/hate relationship with running most of
my life. In high school, I loved track but hated how my
shins throbbed after a workout and caused me pain for
a good part of the time. I was inspired by the late Steve
Prefontaine, however, who ran no matter what. A poster
of Pre adorned my dorm room in college. It was also
there that I had the great fortune to become a teacher’s
assistant to Steve Miller, the track coach at Cal Poly during
the 1970s. As I watched him coach his stable of high
quality runners, I learned a few things.
I began running longer distances in the late 1990s and
finished the Portland Marathon just two weeks after
9/11. I was hooked on longer running distance but not so
thrilled about the marathon. The half-marathon became
my new favorite distance. Over the years I did a number
of half marathons but when Eugene introduced their race,
I felt like I was coming home.
EUGENE HASHEART
Every year the Eugene Marathon helps local charities
and non-profit organizations raise money and awareness.
There’s no doubt that “Eugene Has Heart” as the amount
of donations and support received every year attests.
One special charity being supported through the
Marathon’s Eugene Has Heart initiative is CASA of Lane
County. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
for children provide vital help to abused children in our
area. Highly trained and exceptionally committed, CASA
volunteers act as a powerful voice for children who are
navigating their way through the foster care and judicial
systems toward a brighter future.
Join us for a special edition of the Eugene Marathon
5k as we partner with CASA to advocate for local
kids. Purchase your CASA Champion Cape ($5) and
show your superhero support while enjoying a visit
from Olympic athletes and CASA Honorary Chairs
Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen-Eaton. Cape purchase
proceeds and a portion of your 5k registration goes
directly to CASA to help continue their mission of
working tirelessly on behalf of our local children in need.
We had lived near Eugene in the 1980s and I had always
felt the ghost of Pre, Bill Bowerman and other iconic
running legends who rose to prominence in the area. In
addition, as I was contemplating running the race, I learned
that a dear old friend from college was losing his battle
with ALS. I decided to dedicate my Eugene Half to him and
to all others who unfortunately do not have the ability to
run. In 2013, when I finished the race on Hayward Field,
it was the realization of a lifelong dream--to run on that
historic track in front of cheering fans.Thank you, Eugene,
for making me realize that marathon running is a true
privilege and a dream come true.
GLENN ZOLLNER
I am a combat veteran from the Vietnam War (19691973). I am 100% disabled, primarily from Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder but also from exposure to Agent Orange
and hearing loss. The PTSD has taken its toll. After 40some years it was time to do something about my weight.
At my peak weight I was about 357 pounds. I had trouble
and was out of air walking up a flight of stairs.
At 343 pounds in August of 2014 I decided I needed to
do a life change. I started by going to a plant-based diet
and started losing weight. When I started feeling better
I started walking more and more. While walking around
the local high school track I got the urge to trot a short
distance.Wow! I did it! And it wasn’t so bad. So I started
researching and found a couch-to-5K app by Active.com.
I finished the program and happy to report I just finished
running 4.25 miles on Pre’s Trail in Eugene.
A surprising side effect of running which caught me
off guard is that it has put joy into my life. Running
is something that has taken me off of some of my
medications and I look forward to my daily run or a walk
on my off days. Thanks to running, I have something I
feel is fun and something I look forward to. I’ve also lost
more than 100 pounds and feel younger than my age. I
just entered the Eugene Marathon 5k, one of my first and
I can’t wait to cross the finish line inside Hayward Field. I
am dedicating my run to the other vets who suffer from
PTSD and I hope to inspire and support others through
my journey.

winners will be chosen and will receive free
