This month’s discussion facilitated by Rabbi Ron Muroff “Another Great Program With The Women of Chisuk Emuna!” Mazel Tov MAKE YOUR OWN TALLIT Our Sisterhood program on Sunday, January 6th was a huge success! We were honored to learn from the incredible Shirley Waxman, an accomplished fiber artist and Judaic folklorist. Shirley brought some of her gorgeous handmade tallitot and atarot and spoke about her journey as an artist designing and hand sewing her one–of–a–kind tallitot. We learned the biblical origin of the children of Israel wearing fringes, or “tzitzit”, on the corner of their garments and discussed the origins of women wearing tallitot. Shirley’s presentation was enlightening, entertaining and uplifting! We all loved “shopping” from her gorgeous collection of Tallitot and Atarot and several women have already made appointments to meet in her Maryland home for Shirley to help design a tallit for themselves or a loved one! If you have any questions and to RSVP. and, if you missed Shirley’s presentation, please don’t fret, we are planning to invite her back later this year or early in 2014! (take a look at Shirley’s amazing talent for yourself at www. shirleywaxman.com) We are planning more exciting Sisterhood events! Contact Ivy Levine and/or Robin Schuldenfrei with your programming suggestions, we would love to hear from you! B’Shalom, Robin and Ivy Pasta For Purim If you are interested in designing and creating a tallit for yourself or as a gift, join us on Wednesday evening, February 6th at 7:30 PM at Cory Schneider’s home (1325 Quail Hollow Road) for the first of three sessions. During this session we will talk about fabrics, design, shape and size. In preparation for the session we are asking women to go on the internet and look at the various design, colors and fabric used for tallitot. We encourage everyone to come and learn about the specifics of making a tallit. You need not have much sewing experience. Susan, Natalie and Cory will help you every step of the way. Please join us and participate in this exciting and meaningful project. Contact Cory (657-0656, [email protected]) or Susan (2360146; [email protected]) or Natalie (540-7725, [email protected]) Once again this year, boxes of pasta will be sold on Purim night to be used as groggers, noisemakers. Funds raised from these sales will be donated to tzedakah. Pasta will be donated to food banks following Purim. List of readers is in formation Chisuk Emuna Bulletin SHEVAT ✡ ADAR 5773 FEBRUARY 2013 3 It’s about Life–Make sharing life a part of yours BLOOD DONOR PROGRAM EXCEEDS QUOTA BY NEARLY FORTY PERCENT By any standard of measurement, Chisuk Emuna Congregation’s alliance with the Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank (CPBB) was an overwhelming success in 2012. The CPBB maintains statistics based on the number of attempted blood and platelet donations rather than the number of units actually collected. For platelets, each attempt is treated as two whole blood donations. For 2012, our quota was forty-two; we logged fifty-eight. Of that total, thirty-one, or slightly more than one-half, occurred during our two Blood Drives of March and September. Thirty-one different donors, not all Chisuk Emuna members, rolled up their sleeves. Twelve of those accounted for multiple donations, with two donors reaching five. These impressive statistics demonstrate the importance of our two blood drives. However, let us not rest upon this success. The need for blood and platelets never ends. Jewish thinking reminds us that Hashem, the author of all, provides a repository for our souls on earth. We do not own our bodies. We experience but a transitory ability to exercise free will. In the most literal sense then, those who are physically capable of donating blood/platelets and choose to do so, not only fulfill the Mitzvah of saving a life but participate and share in tselem elohim (G-d’s image); we enhance and reflect Creation’s sanctity. Numbers are important, but we ought not to permit them to blind us to our purpose. In that vein, for those who can donate, please place Sunday, February 24. 2013, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, at the Jewish Community Center, Purim Carnival Day, on your calendar to donate as part of Chisuk Emuna’s next blood drive. You may also donate at other times and locations. Log on to www.cpbb.org or call 1.800.771.0059 for information. On Wednesday December 19th, USY extended Hanukkah a bit and had its annual Hanukkah party. With Latkes, soup, snacks and candy, the USYers enjoyed games, hanging out, and lots of chatting. There were even some Alumni drop ins that only made the night that much better! During Winter break, 2 local USYers attended USY International Convention in Boston, and had a week filled with amazing friends and times! On Saturday January 12th, 15 adventure- loving USYers (and their brave advisor and one brave parent) went snow tubing at Ski Rountop. It was a night filled with laughter, falling, wet clothes, but most of all fun! The next day, 10 USYers joined Kadimaniks (5th-7th graders), and congregants from Beth El and Chisuk Emuna at the Central PA Food Bank to volunteer. It was such a great afternoon spent in good company knowing we were helping others. Believe it or not Purim is JUST around the corner and USY needs your help. Every year USY organizes, creates and delivers Mishloach Manot bags and cards to sell. This is our largest fundraiser every year. We need volunteers to either help prepare and/or help deliver the bags. Please contact Leslie Wiener if you can spare some time the weeks of February 18th and February 24th at [email protected] or 717-552-7194. Thank you! Contributions The following people have made Ramah Represents Excellence Established in 1950, Camp Ramah in the Poconos has consistently created a warm, nurturing, and “fun” environment for our campers for over sixty years. Situated in Northeast Pennsylvania on a campsite of over 90 acres, our campers enjoy a picturesque waterfront, a newlyrenovated, heated pool, as well as our state-of-the-art sports facilities: 3 regulation basketball courts, new tennis courts, a hockey pavilion, a baseball field with a home-run fence, an indoor gym with a rock-wall, as well as a team building high ropes course. At Camp Ramah, children thrive on the sports fields, excel in our visual and performing arts programs, learn lessons of leadership, and become a part of something truly magical. Ramah Creates Community Camp Ramah in the Poconos represents a truly unique approach to the Jewish Summer Camp experience. In order to properly care for our over 400 campers each summer, we employ over 200 staff members who are committed to our mission of inspiring each child to become their best selves. Our energetic and talented staff members are largely products of our camp itself and we take a multi-generational approach to camp staffing, so that your child will see young adults, college graduates, parents and grown families as part of their camp community. At the core of the Ramah program is our commitment to an immersive Jewish environment. Your child will experience Jewish living as an organic, joyous component to Camp. We foster spirituality, critical-thinking skills, character development, and valuesladen living through our approach to Jewish education. Above all else, Camp is about creating a life-long community of friends. Your child’s social experience at camp is among our highest priorities. Our counselors, senior staff, and adult advisors ensure several layers of camper care for each and every child in our community. Your child will experience the immense joy of feeling a part of a bunk, an Edah (Age Group), and our camp as a whole. They will no doubt make lifelong friends who will be a part of their lives forever. SHEVAT ✡ ADAR 5773 FEBRUARY 2013 Purim Purim celebrates Jewish survival. Although Purim has the flavor of a Jewish mardi gras, it is essentially a celebration of surviving in an upside down world. Through prayer and fasting, courage and action, the characters of the Purim story continue to teach us lessons in survival, both individually and as members of the Jewish People. Purim is not only a kids’ holiday. Please join in the celebration. Please note: The Fast of Esther (February 21st) commemorates Esther’s three days of fasting in preparation for her meeting with the king. The four mitzvoth of Purim: 1. Megillah - Each year, we are required to listen to the complete reading of Megillat Esther. Please join us as the Megillah is read on Saturday, February 23rd at 7 p.m. and during Purim morning services on Sunday, February 24th at 8:30 am. 2. Mishloach Manot - the fun Mitzvah of giving at least two types of food to at least one recipient. The mitzvah of mishloach manot is based on the verse in the Megillah instructing us to “send portions one to another” (9:22). You can send Mishloach Manot through USY. 3. Matanot L’evyonim - Based on the injunction in the Megillah that on Purim we must “send gifts to the poor” (9:22), the holiday commands us to share our good fortune with those in need. Maimonides teaches: “It is better for a person to increase gifts to the poor than to increase his feast or the mishloach manot to his neighbors. There is no joy greater or more rewarding than to gladden the heart of the poor, orphans, widows, and strangers. For by gladdening the hearts of the downtrodden, we are following the example of the Divine.” There will be an opportunity to give tzedakah to help the poor at the end of the Megillah reading. 4. Seudat Purim - It is a mitzvah to have a feast with family and friends on Purim Day.
