Municipality of Levice, Slovak Republic
Levice lies in eastern part of the Danubian Lowland, is the district town of the largest district
of Slovakia and the 18th largest town in Slovakia. Levice is located at an altitude above 165
m and occupies an area of 61 km2. The territory consists of its urban form parts Čankov,
worse Kalinčiakovo, Horša and Malý Kiar.
The town (33 504 inhabitants) was first time mentioned in 1156 and attracts guests because
of its historic monuments and lovely landscape. The most noteworthy cultural monuments
are Levice Castle – fortress from the period of the Turkish Wars, the Renaissance Dobó
Chateau, the early 13th century Romansque chapel in Kalinčiakovo, and the churches (2
Catholic, 1 Calvinist and 1 Protestant). The town is dominated by the former Teachers
College and the Town Hall. Our visitors are charmed by Šiklóš which is an impressive tuff
formation, the Levice Calvary with the ruins of the castle, the bird sanctuary Levice Ponds,
and the Horšianska Valley State Nature Reserve and a restored Jewish synagogue. The centre
of local tourism is the urban recreation area of Margita Ilona (termal water, car camping).
Every year the Levice Castle Festival and the Traditional Fair of Levice take place.
