Moving On Up
The Junior League of Austin volunteers share their talents,
and pick up a few new ones along the way | By B e th I vers
The Junior League of Austin (JLA) is an organization filled with dedicated
women who are committed to making their community a better
place. In 2013 alone, the organization will invest more than $780,000
and 100,000 volunteer hours back into the Austin community. Yet,
as the many women who have devoted their time and energy to The
Junior League of Austin over the last 80 years know, women typically
gain as much, if not more, than they give through their membership
experience.
“In 30 years as a member of The Junior League of Austin, and through a
variety of leadership roles, from Project Chair to President, I can truly say
that I earned my MBA from the JLA,” Sustaining member Libby Malone
said.
What many people outside of The Junior League of Austin may not
realize is that Ms. Malone’s experience is not unique. In fact, countless
women have their own personal stories of how their experience serving
in the JLA has developed them personally and professionally in much
the same way as their careers.
“The JLA has been more than a volunteer opportunity for me,” Sustainer
Rosemary Wynn said. ”It really is a business, with structure and
organization unlike any other entity I have ever been involved with. We
change jobs every year and learn different roles which is something you
rarely get in a work environment.”
The roles Ms. Wynn assumed stretched her to perform tasks outside her
personal comfort zone including forcing her to face one of her greatest
fears - speaking publicly. “I felt great after speaking at leadership
training and was so glad that I had been given the opportunity to face
my fears,” Ms.Wynn said.
At work, I solve physical and
spatial puzzles. In the League,
I get to work with relationship
and people puzzles.
- Camille Jobe, JLA Active member
Public speaking is just one example of a growth experience through
The Junior League of Austin. Sitting on a non-profit board, liaising
with vendors, chairing and leading committees of other members,
fundraising and budgeting are just some of the duties members
say they have been asked to perform through their Junior League
placements.
“Members will grow both personally and professionally through the
numerous placements that are offered,” Active Fallon Gaskamp said.
“With leadership roles that are as diverse as Vice President of Financial
Development and Social Media Chair to serving as a Project Chair and
managing the League volunteers for another non-profit organization,
the opportunities for development are endless, and members are often
asked to take on roles outside of their experience.
As Camille Jobe said, “Right now, I am serving as the Membership
Development VP. That’s kind of like being in the HR department of
a 2,400 person firm. It’s not something that I have ever done before
or even thought I would do well.” However, just as many companies
ask star performers to take on growth assignments, members of the
League’s leadership team asked her to take on this position. Though she
is trained and works professionally as an architect, she says she actually
loves her role in The Junior League of Austin. “At work, I solve physical
and spatial puzzles. In the League, I get to work with relationship and
people puzzles.”
Frequently, the personal growth and development members receive
through the League leads to new opportunities. For Marilyn Willson,
“It was through JLA and the opportunities that it afforded me that
I was able to develop my passion for helping others into a career
which I love.” Ms. Willson transitioned from being a teacher into the
Development Director for The Settlement Home for Children where she
is responsible for all aspects of community fundraising, special events,
communications, branding, and donor development for an agency with
85 full-time employees and an annual budget greater than $4.5 million.
Though not every member’s experience leads to a career change,
the League typically gives a personal gift to each of the women who
becomes a member. For Ms. Wynn, “It made me feel valued and gave
me a sense of accomplishment that I don’t think I could have found
anywhere else.”
2012 A Christmas Affair Chair Marilyn Willson (center) is also employed as
the Development Director for The Settlement Home for Children. Pictured

Fun facts
from behind
the scenes at
A Christmas
Affair
•
Over 200 merchants from across the country and more than 30,000
people are expected to attend the 2013 A Christmas Affair (ACA).
•
Last year, 117 merchant trucks, trailers and vans were expertly
parked, on average, less than two inches apart by the Traffic and
Security Team in the service yard of Palmer Events. Space is a
precious commodity in the service yard!
•
The ACA Committee spends more than a combined total of 5,000
hours at Palmer Events Center the week of A Christmas Affair.
•
Nancy Wade, a 2013 ACA Sustaining Advisor, was on the first ACA
Committee in 1976.
•
The main Christmas tree is 25 feet tall, has 10,800 lights, and is
adorned with 3,000 ornaments.
•
At this year’s event, over 200 pounds of shrimp, eight gallons
of hummus, more than 1800 cupcakes, and about 25 gallons of
dressing will be served. In addition, this year all tearoom meals
will be served on china!
•
Several participating merchants’ sales will benefit local and regional
non-profit organizations including Open Arms and the M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center Children’s Art Project. One group of high
school students is selling monogrammed school supplies to raise
money for local charities.
•
The Merchant Committee will start work in December to prepare
for the 2014 event!

Photographer: Susan K. Hoermann, Evergreen Studios
On behalf of The Junior League of Austin, welcome to Winter Wonderland - where we
highlight the elegance and beauty of winter and celebrate the wonder of the impact The
Junior League of Austin is able to make in our community.
The holiday season is a wonderful time of year for the League, not only for the renewed
commitment to our own families, but also because of the opportunity the season presents
to us as an organization.
Proceeds from A Christmas Affair (ACA) directly benefit our Central Texas community,
supporting more than 25 area non-profits with financial resources and trained volunteers
each year.
As the Chair of this year’s A Christmas Affair, I would like to thank the fabulous women
on the ACA Committee who have contributed thousands of hours to ensure our event’s
success. It has truly been an honor to serve with such a talented and committed group of
individuals. I continue to be amazed by the strength and character of our Junior League
volunteer force.
I would also like to extend my appreciation to our generous sponsors for their financial
contributions which enable our vision of a world-class holiday market to become a reality.
And a final thank you to the greater Austin community for your support of this uniquely
Austin tradition. We look forward to celebrating our 38th A Christmas Affair with you at
Winter Wonderland.
Thank you for helping us build a better a community. Shop because you care!

Thank You To Our Donors
The Junior League of Austin thanks the following donors for their support of our charitable
work in the community. League volunteers serve the community through well-known
programs such as Coats for Kids, and also in partnership with non-profit agencies,
increasing their capacity with our members as a volunteer workforce. With every dollar
raised for community programs, the League triples its impact when combined with the
commitment of our trained volunteers. For example:
• With $2,000, the League will provide a week of activities for children with diabetes while providing education about managing their illness. Our volunteers will be Camp Group Leaders.
• With $500, the League will support a Girl Scout troop, which serves girls and their
incarcerated mothers. Our volunteers will be Troop Assistants.
• With $80, our FIT - Food in Tummies volunteers will feed a hungry child weekend meals for a school semester.
• With $45, warm winter coats will be purchased for three children. Our volunteers will fit those children and their new coats at Coats for Kids.
These are only a few of the ways The Junior League of Austin impacts our community.
Thank you again to all our donors!

from The
sustaining President
On behalf of the more than 1,200 Sustaining Members of The Junior League of Austin, we
are thrilled to be a part of this year’s A Christmas Affair, Winter Wonderland, and grateful to
Austin for its many years of supporting our impact in the community.
As Sustaining members, we are proud of the many ways the League is growing and evolving
to meet the changing needs of Austin and of our own members. We believe we are part of a
very positive force in our city — from Coats for Kids, to FIT - Food in Tummies , to our many
partnerships with community-based organizations such as the Austin Children’s Museum,
CASA of Travis County, Con Mi MADRE, and Mobile Loaves and Fishes. The impact of the
League’s work is broad: feeding and clothing people who are struggling to meet their basic
needs, empowering women and children who are victims of violence, mentoring youth
toward college, and enriching this city through arts and environmental education.
Your participation in A Christmas Affair enables the JLA to continue to make this powerful
impact, and for that, imagine 1,200 women saying, “Thank you!”
