20 Years!!!

2015 UBE Chairman
20th Annual Upland Bird Extravaganza.
Really?!? 20 years we’ve been doing this?
Thank you to all of the supporters of the
Stephenville Evening Lions Club and the
Upland Bird Extravaganza over the last 20
years. You helped us put on our most successful UBE last year, raising over $160,000
for boy scouts, girls scouts, 4-H, Foster’s
Home, SISD Education Foundation and a
host of other worthwhile youth programs in
our area. One of the things that has contributed to the success of UBE is that it is always
fun, and there is always something a little different about it than the year before. UBE has
evolved over the last 20 years, and this year
is no different. Look for these changes this
year:
“...there is always
something a little
different about it...
1.) The Wild Game Dinner and Auction is a
lot of fun! So much fun that we realize it can
be difficult to get up early the Saturday after
and shoot a few hundred rounds through your
12 gauge at the UBE shooting events. We’ve
fixed that! The corporate 5-stand competition and the sporting clays competition have
been moved to the Saturday prior to the dinner and auction. We hope this allows more
people to enjoy the shooting events, and we
hope to see you at Lone Star Sporting Clays
on April 11th.
2.)
Our large raffle went over so well
last year with the Polaris 4-wheeler as the
grand prize, that we decided to step up our

2015 UBE Raffle
By Monte Montes
2015 UBE Raffle Chairman
It’s an exciting year for the Upland Bird Extravaganza Raffle. We have some very nice
and interesting prizes. Only four hundred
(400) tickets will be sold. Get your tickets
early, as last year, we sold out before the
event and had none available to sell during
the UBE dinner and auction. Tickets this
year will be $100.00 each.
This year’s grand prize is a Polaris, ETX,
570CC, Electronically Fuel Injected (first
year this option is available) Ranger 4X4
with power steering in Sage Green©. This
most popular handguns made by Glock. This
particular Glock is a model 19 (Gen 3), 9mm
that comes with a unique twist. The upper
portion, or slide of this pistol is layered in
Nickel Carbide, making it a Bi-tone Glock,
which is very rare. The Glock 19 is ideal for
a very versatile role because of its reduced
dimensions when compared to the standard
sized option. Chambered in 9x19mm / 9mm
Luger, the Glock 19 has found worldwide acclaim with both private and public security
agencies. In addition to being used as a con-
ventional service pistol, it is ideal for concealed carry or as a backup weapon. A deeper description of the Glock 19 is available at
their official web page at http://us.glock.com/
products/model/g19 . Just remember, the one
in this raffle is Bi-tone and not all black like
the one on the web page. The MSRP on this
pistol is $565.99.
The fourth place prize is a Howa, Model
1500 bolt action rifle chambered in 22-250
with a “Kryptek” camo patterned Houge

The second place prize is a Rhino - IRONWORKS 3027 Model Gun Safe. These safes
are built in an old style fashion with exposed
welds, oversized hinges, and are very plush
inside. This particular model is a “Oak
Wood” finish and would make a great addition to any office or home. It has a fire rating
of 1200 degrees for one hour, has a Sargent
Greenleaf rotary combination lock, and one
adjustable shelf inside and has distressed
faux suede interior fabric and rivet-like upholstery. The outer dimensions are 30” high,
27” wide, and 18” deep. The inner dimension are 26.5” high, 24” wide, 13” deep,
and it weighs in at 307 pounds, and can be
bolted to the floor. The MSRP for the Rhino
Ironworks safe is $1299.99. You can see the
details of this safe at http://www.murdochs.

Over $1 million dollars have
been raised for local organizations through the Stephenville
Evening Lion’s Upland Bird
Extravaganza fundraiser that
began in 1995. The 2014 Upland Bird Extravaganza raised
just upwards of $160,000 to
be donated back to community
organizations. What started as
a dog trial on the Horton’s private ranch in the early years, has
turned into a weekend of outdoor
fun and competition that grows
and develops each year. The
events we know and love including the Wild Game Dinner and
Auction and the several various
shooting events help fund local
organizations.
Though the Evening Lions
club originally raised money
only for the boy scouts, the
proceeds of Upland Bird Extravaganza enable the support
of many more organizations.
The Evening Lions believe
the young people in their community deserve a wide range
of activities and help fund organizations like the local 4-H
chapter that allows kids to learn
about livestock and agriculture
and the Stephenville Parks and
Recreation Department that
puts on youth sports events, the
Evening Lions Club’s ability
to support these organizations
grows each year through the Upland Bird Extravaganza. In 2014

success of the UBE 2014. They
sponsored children from trees at
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erath
County, Texas Bank, First Financial Bank, Hayden Real Estate,
Tanglewood Pharmacies, as well
as continue their long term support
of the tree at Coldwell Banker Preferred Properties. As you see most
of these organizations provide the
youth of Erath County an important opportunity to learn and grow
to become successful adults. All
organizations funded provide hope

makes the Upland Bird Extravaganza such a wonderful event. The

The Upland Bird Extravaganza has also evolved its noncompetitive fun from a BBQ

silent auctions, and a “Rell of

Game Dinner and Auction will
be graciously hosted by VW

Friday, April 17 at 5p.m. City

popularity and large crowds,
the Shooting Events will be
held at Lone Star Sporting

Member Spotlight……the Rookie
As one of our Club’s newest members,
let’s get to know Jay R Smith and why
he joined the Stephenville Evening Lions
Club.
Where do you work?
I am retired from the United States Military.
Now I spend my time out at my ranch.
And how long were you there?
I spent 21 years in the Military.
What made you want to join the Stephenville
Evening Lions Club?
Working on a fence one day and Ed came
up to me talking about the club. Ed & Calvin
talked me into it, they both are men of integrity so it was easy.
How long have you been a member?
18 months.
What do you enjoy most about being a member?
I am the head cook for the Club. I just love
to help out in the community any way I can.
I’ve always believed in civic duty and helping out with those who are less fortunate. My
family and I are truly blessed.
What are some of the best things the club
has done while you’ve been a member?
Being able to help out SISD Education
club?
I’d really like to see more recruitment
throughout the year.
What would you say to someone that would
like to become a member?
If you would like to give back to your community where it matters and where the 100%
of the money goes back to the community,
this is the club for you.
What is your involvement in this year’s
UBE?
Head Cook, responsible for all the food as
of this year.
What has your involvement in past UBE’s
been?
I learned a lot from Frank. He taught me
how to serve the masses. I’ve served for 300400 people before but it was unreal to serve
800-1200 people, and Frank is just a fountain
of knowledge.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m from Brackettville, Tx, it’s just a small

Foundation.
What is the club’s most worthwhile cause?
Helping the boy scouts and the youth of Erath County. They are our future.
What would you like to see the club do more
of?
I think the club is really doing all that it can.
It goes above and beyond on any event, and I
think we are right where we need to be on our
growth potential.
What changes have you seen in the club?
We are a little more organized this year going into the Upland Bird Extravaganza.

town in South Texas. I met my beautiful wife
at the Federal Law Enforcement Center in
Brunswick, Georgia while I was with the
Border Patrol Agency. Now we are both retired and operate our little ranch.
What are your hobbies?
Farming, my dad started me hunting and
fishing. He would take us for a month in the
summer on the Nueces River when I was
younger, collect antique tractors, and I build
cedar furniture like gun cabinets, etc.
What other civic activities are you involved
in?
I am the Head Cook for the Evening Lions,
VFW, American Legion, & Toys for Tots.
Anything else you would like to say?
I’d like to thank Ed Horton & Calvin Hudson for asking me to join the club. It really
means a lot to me.

I’m not exactly sure, 15 or 16 years probably. My son and I came to the first Upland
Bird event, even though I wasn’t a member
and didn’t know anybody, just because we
like to shoot, and it kind of went from there.
So I think about 15 years.
What do you enjoy most about being a
member?
Number one is the meetings. Meeting two
times a month is always something I look forward to because it’s a good time to go blow
off some steam and shoot the bull and have
a lot of time to laugh. Additionally, I also
enjoy seeing how this group comes together
when the time for preparing for the Upland

Bird event happens. Everybody comes toEvening

event as well, it’s amazing to see how everything comes together. I was the Upland
Bird chairman in 2005, if I remember right,
and that was the year that we moved all of
the evening events to City Limits, this event
has just grown exponentially since then. We
support a number of groups by having such
a large event, made possible by the support of local businesses and friends—we’ve
been able to do some things that we would
not have been able to do even 10 years ago.
I like to see the good that it does for all types
of young people and different organizations
around town.
What are some of the best things the club
has done while you’ve been a member?
Boy that’s a big list, and I’m not sure I remember all of it. I would say one of the most
recent things; we made a large sponsorship
with the Stephenville Education Foundation.
This is not something we could have done

the years, we’ve been able to bring in a lot
of younger people. I think I’m probably the
fourth oldest member of this club at the very
young age of 55, but I like all the energy that
the members have, as well as their enthusiasm for the event. We’re continually getting
in new members and would like to see it continue to grow. We’re not a large club as far
as head count is concerned but the quality is
definitely there.
What changes would you like to see in the
club?
Just continuing to take on more sponsorships as the fundraising continues to increase.
The more money we make, the more money
we can put back into the community.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My wife Melissa and I both grew up in
Clifton and moved to Stephenville in 1989,
and we’ve been here ever since. We still have
a lot of family in Clifton and are down there a
lot, but it’s sure nice having two home towns.
I have three children and two grandkids, a
bird dog, cattle and horses—that’s enough.
What are your hobbies?
Upland Bird, dove, elk, and bear hunting,
other types of big game, as well. I like to take
motorcycle trips on the Honda Goldwing.
My wife and I like to travel to all different
types of venues. And also we do spend a lot
of time on a farm we bought down in Clifton
that Melissa grew up on, and there’s always
lots of work to do. Also I like to do charity
auctions. I started doing the Clifton livestock
sale three years ago when the former auctioneer retired and I’ve done it ever since, and
really enjoy doing those types of things.
What other civic activities are you involved
in?
I’ve been involved in the Chamber for a
number of years, joined the Optimist Club,
as well in the late ‘80s. I’ve been on various
boards of non-profit organizations over the
last 20 years, it’s a lengthy list.
Anything else you’d like to say?
The main thing I’d like to say is congratulations to this organization for an unbelievable
20 year run so far. This is our 20th anniversary, and I expect this event to be bigger than
last year, although we never thought we’d
do what we did last year. I hope this club
continues to do what it does in drawing new
members, and continue to grow it, which will
benefit Erath County. I really enjoyed being
with these guys, a lot of them we hunt with,
laugh with, and shoot the bull with and it’s a
great organization. •
